Minecraft getting free 'Battle' mini-game update in June

More screens here

Ready your enchanted rods! Strap on your diamond helms! We’ve been working with our chums at 4J Studios to make something pretty special - and free! - for Console Edition players to enjoy. We’re calling it Battle. It’s a last-minecrafter-standing deathmatch and the first of a number of mini games we’ll be releasing, designed to help players compete under cool and crazy rulesets with minimum fuss.

Of course, our amazingly creative console community already improvises new (and often very weird) ways to play with friends - and long may this continue! Our mini games will give you a helping hand, dropping you straight into the fun without the need to mess around with manual countdowns, laboriously prep loot chests or keep score.

Battle pits players against one another in a fight for survival, as they race to snatch weapons and resources from chests, dance over each arena’s unique perils and stave off hunger pangs. We’ve made the mini game specifically with console players and couch-based competition in mind: it supports up to four players in splitscreen and eight players online, either by invitation or using the in-game matchmaking system. We wanted it to be super-accessible and fast-paced, so we’ve tried to keep the focus on rapid tactical thinking and combat: there’s no need to craft anything here, and you can loot inventories and equip armour with the tap of a button.

If you fall to your foe’s blade - don’t despair! You can always respawn as a bat and flutter round your nemesis, squeaking vengefully. Take care to check out the lobby in between games, too. There may be a few surprises to find!

Battle will be available in June as a free update to Minecraft: Console Edition players and comes with three incredible, deadly arenas. Down the line we’ll be releasing more map packs for $2.99 a pop.

I'll see if I can hunt down some footage of the entire level, rather than just the GIF above. Let's hope Nintendo doesn't end up randomly deleting this stage!

First artwork for upcoming Mega Man cartoon, new details

We’ve got some special news for you today – Mega Man will be in a brand new animated series from Dentsu Entertainment, with Man of Action (the company behind Ben 10 and the characters of Big Hero 6), as executive producers who will be overseeing writing and story development! While the show is slated to launch in 2017 – the same year as Mega Man’s 30th anniversary – we’ve got a sneak peek for you today at how Mega Man will appear in the upcoming show, as well as some insight into the story and characters you can expect to meet.

If you’re an 80s or 90s kid, you may remember an animated series about the fighting robot (sing it with me now: Mega Man!) that ran for two seasons during the mid-90s. It was a fresh, and unique, if not sometimes silly, take on Mega Man, and one that a lot of people (including myself) remember fondly. The new animated Mega Man series will follow Aki Light – a normal, upbeat, and above all optimistic young school-aged robot living in Silicon City. He soon learns that deep within his programming are secret protocols that allow him to transform – giving him nanocore armor, a Mega Buster, and the iconic helmet to turn him into a superhero – Mega Man!

Promising exciting new technologies and new robots, the series will follow the adventures and trials of Aki Light – a.k.a. Mega Man – as he faces off against threats to Silicon City, while trying to keep his superhero identity a secret and maintain a normal robot schoolkid life.

It’ll be a great way for newcomers and younger fans to meet Mega Man for the first time, and a treat for fans who grew up with the games, featuring the return of beloved characters like everyone’s favorite robot canine, Rush! Be sure to keep an eye out for the Blue Bomber’s animated adventures in 2017 – the same year as Mega Man’s 30th anniversary!

Thanks to Sergiomonty for the heads up!
