Analyst - Nintendo saved 3DS with price cut

"In the time of austerity, consumers are considerably sensitive to prices, and Nintendo proved that a price cut can save a product." - Jia Wu, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics
All this comes from an interview about the PS Vita, which has analyst saying that a price cut is already necessary.

It is hard for Sony to be charging $250 for its handheld when you can get a PS3 for the same price.
Likewise, it was tough for Nintendo to be charging $250 for its handheld when you could get a Wii for $100 less.

And then even when he's right, he's only half right. Nintendo releasing its substantial 1st party original 3DS titles(read: Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7) helped pull the 3DS out of the depths too.

I'd say the 3DS could've sold a lot better with Mario 3D Land right out of the gate. There's also the thought that it launched too early; a later launch allowing for a more polished and attractive launch offering.

Can I have my paycheck now?

All that said: I would sooner consider the Vita if more compelling software(note: my opinion) were coming out than if they lowered the price. $250 with interesting games versus $200(trying to be reasonable) without.

I want Vita to succeed as a platform. I don't want the people who think there's no room for dedicated handhelds to start mouthing off when the system isn't selling due to a slightly high price or a shallow selection of games (which is understandable with a platform in its infancy), especially since the 3DS has proven them wrong already.

I have to agree with the commenter that posted on his blog more than the analyst himself. There's not enough room in todays mobile field for Vita. Where does it fit in?

It fits in exactly where the 3DS/PS3/360/Wii do. People who find what it offers attractive at the right pricepoint will get it and enjoy it.

I don't get the 'mutually exclusive' iPod/Pad/Android/tablet vs. traditional handheld argument. One or the other? No.
I cite PC gaming versus traditional consoles as a good comparison to combat that thinking. More people have PCs than consoles. People play games on their PCs. They haven't driven away consoles. Both platforms can co-exist.

HA, and they are the same analysts that said that the 3DS was destined to fail. BAAAKAAA! XD

@ocre The things with the vita is that it's competing with the 3DS and tablets/smartphones. Game-wise the 3DS is probably a better choice and feature-wise most smartphones can do what the vita can do. My phone has a better screen, better battery life, and all the apps people are crazy about that are on the vita and my 3DS has the games that i want (and it's about $100 less too). It seems cool but it's not going to sell that well in the long run. A friend of mine is getting me one for $150 but if it was anymore i wouldn't be interested.

@8bit101

Because it WAS at that price and with the lack of content.

Why do you think Nintendo gave it a price cut and took such a substantial loss?

@gatorboi352

With the 3DS. Not sure what you're getting it.

@ocre
yeah but consoles have the upper hand in price and has its fair share of exclusives, that's their biggest advantage, and i think the problem here is Vitas's price, its worth it, but it's not what people are wanting to spend on a gaming device compared to other options.Their franchises on the vita also need to differ themselves from the console versions so the customers see them as real new games and not just a port. Even tough, i agree there's room for vita but needs work that im sure we will see later, im sure with the rise of next gen consoles (and their prices) people will take their looks at the vita again if Sony hasnt dropped the price.
