The Pokemon franchise endures because of the 'richness of the world', says marketing director

“One of the reasons is the richness of its world. There are more than 640 Pokémon now, so everyone has a favorite or a team of favorites. The principle tenet of ‘Pokémon’ is collect, trade and battle: Now you have 640 options. You can collect them, trade them with your friends, or train them for battle in the trading card or video games. People want to complete their collections or find that one new Pokémon that helps their battle strategy.” - J.C. Smith, marketing director for the Pokémon Co. International

That's definitely one of the strong selling points. Seeing the huge world and characters from the outside gets you excited, and it makes you want to jump in and see what all the fuss is about!

I'm not in love with the franchise, but i do like it. Having no nostalgia for it I went into playing Pokemon Red and i really enjoyed it.

Yes, and if you want it to continue having a rich world, it would be in your best option to keep things natural (i.e. no digimon).

That's the problem, there are too many Pokemon, and many are too repetitive, the series feels diluted and bloated.

When I read the title I thought they were implying the in-game world was rich. And I was about to say, "Not really!"

Compared to any other game, Pokémon has arguably one of the most sophisticated game worlds. The lore, the species information, and the variety of cities and environments-- there's a reason Bulbapedia exists. Than there's also the anime and the art and bits of info on the trading cards.

I agree with the market director. Having a good rich world gives a more "caring" sense and more effort then typical companies who just add in some monster designs and call it a day without explaining them whatsoever.
