RUMOR - Square-Enix licenses characters to Nintendo for undisclosed project?

Here's a juicy rumor for you guys and gals. We're hearing that Square-Enix may have worked some sort of deal with Nintendo to share a character or characters for use in a game project. We don't know what Square-Enix characters these are, but apparently they haven't been used in a very, very long time. Is Square-Enix looking to revamp a forgotten series/character with Nintendo's help? Thanks to reader Noel for the heads up, as well as the direct tip.

I'm almost certain it'll be a sports game.

Mario Sports Mix 2. Move along people.

So because you don't get their hype they shouldn't be brought back and fleshed out better in a modern game? Solid reasoning.

*hopes Nintendo brings back EVO with Retro making it*

Poor Retro, everyone wants them to make everything.

... E.V.O. Search for Eden?? Oh my, I SO WANT a modern game like this! It could be so awesome. It's what I wanted Spore to be, but it failed. :/

But it's more probable that's it's only Geno being licensed for Smash Bros as an assist trophy or something...

Rad Racer would be a nice competitor to Gran Turismo and Forza, I'd really love a racing sim like this on the Wii U or 3DS.

Good luck with that. People forget that Kingdom Hearts is owned by both Square AND Disney. This includes the original characters introduced through said series.

And we all know how reluctant Disney is with its franchises... It's a bloody friggin miracle Square even got permission to go through with the games.

Hum... Remember:
[...], but apparently they haven't been used in a very, very long time.

Kingdom heart is quite recent (and anyway I take this comment more as a joke as anything) and didn't Chrono Trigger receive a remake recently on DS?
There is a lot of OLD franchises that Square-Enix seems to have forgotten that was on Nintendo platforms, and that could interest Nintendo. Also, the work on Smash have just started, and now is really a good time to start talking with third parties for licenses on characters.

And all this, considering this RUMOR is true. But yeah, it's so vague and simple that it could end up true even if it was baseless. Just saying. Also, since when RMC post rumors without any source? It makes me wonder what the guy had to back up his claim, as I doubt RMC would put too much weight behind baseless rumors.

EDIT: Also, there is no member named "Noel" on GoNintendo... at least I couldn't find him..

Best Case Scenario: Anything...
Worst Case Scenario: ...except for Mario Sports Mix 2.

Oh wait, Square Enix did those mediocre games. Nevermind. Slime for Super Smash Bros.! :)

It wasn't exactly a remake, more like a rerelease of the same SNES game but with an extra dungeon and a few new weapons.

I think the only ones I would even want are from before 1995. People from Crono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6, I guess.

I hate all the later characters. Especially Yuffie.

God, I would love it if they released some Super Mario RPG remake for the Wii U, and really use the system's power to make it even grand and colorful like the first one.

If it's another sport minigame fest, I can not give a damn.

I dunno if I'd want another Mario RPG (as in a remake or SMRPG2) I think I'd much prefer a game that played more like the Mario and Luigi RPG games, heck, one of those with the SMRPG cast would make my head explode

Could it be related to Fortune Street? That's an existing Square Enix / Nintendo crossover game...

Even if it is Mallow or Geno it could just be so they can have more cameos in Mario games without having to go through all that business with SE first.

EDIT: It can't be SMRPG as that lives on under the name "Paper Mario" (the first Paper Mario was first known as Super Mario RPG 2")

How is it that people can conveniently remember that but they can't remember that Super Mario World is Super Mario Bros. 4 worth pennies?

I call shenanigans!

That' doesn't mean anything. Super Mario World was originally referred to as Super Mario Bros. 4 before it was changed. Now they've registered Supermario4.com and many think that's leading to Super Mario Bros. 4. They could call it Super Mario RPG 2 if they wanted because it's their copyright. They could call it Super Mario Bros. for all they care.

The theory is that Super Mario isn't the same as Super Mario Bros (same series, different meaning). The reason being that the main action revolves around Mario instead of Mario and Luigi smacking Bowser's crap together. While Luigi is in Galaxy 1/2 and 3D Land, his inclusion isn't (supposed to be, because gaming news likes to open its big mouth) initially known.

In short, it could be referring to the next engine/gimmick for a 3D Mario game.

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. The EAD Tokyo games = Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2 and 3D Land
4. Non-Galaxy related Wii U Mario title (3D Land was non-Galaxy related too, but it was a tweaked version of said game engine I believe)

Paper Mario to me was more of it's own game to me as is the Mario & Luigi series. Super Mario RPG is it's own game too and i hope that we get a Super Mario RPG 2 with Geno and all of that. Paper Mario is different because unlike in Super Mario RPG he was the main villan. in Super Paper Mario they changed it up again when they had count bleck who was in turn the main villan in that game.

In the end i want to see a true Super Mario RPG 2 game made.
