I can remember drawing video game characters as a kid, but I never designed my own levels. That's how Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley used to spend his time, as you can see from the image above. Take note of this layout, Miyamoto! Thanks to Robertaitor for the heads up!

So, the stages he made were basically Alex Kidd + Mario?
No, thanks. But good try!
When I was little I had these elaborate level designs of what I thought Mario 3 should be. It was this sort of mash-up of Mario 1 and 2, where Bowser and Wart teamed up and Mario had to defeat them both. I had no idea at the time that Mario 2 was a one-off that would never be revisited.
I did that too! I and then I would play them with my pencil!
Awwwwwwwwww thats adorable. ~<3
I used to do the exact same thing when I was a kid. Basically ended up with me being a pain in the ass to my parents by instantly using up all the paper they gave me. ("This piece is MEANT to only have a pipe on it, geez!")
I used to do similar stuff like this when I was like 12 or 13, but with my own game I wanted to make to compete with Mortal Kombat. I'd think up characters, name them, think of fatalities they could use, and even have little back stories for them.
I also had a bunch of ideas for a Super Mario Kart 2 with new items and track ideas (my drawing skills are crap, so I'd have to try to explain everything in great detail in my writing).
I wish I had saved the notebooks I had that stuff written down in. I'm jealous of my younger self sometimes. I could never do that as an adult because I lack creativity now. It's like a permanent writer's block ever since I entered my late teens.
Awesome. I used to draw stuff like this all the time as a kid. Except mine usually included tanks, soldiers, helicopters, planes, etc. battling it out under ground, on land, in the air, or in the sea. I can totally relate.
So I wasn't the only one that did it
Dang, it would be pretty cool if a sidescrolling 2D Mario platformer had such a large world...
I designed Megaman levels xD
