Coming from a Nintendo rep...
"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."
I think we all saw that one coming. It's fine by me. I'm always down with some more side-scrolling Mario action! Are we going to get a side-scrolling brand-new Mario game at Wii U launch?! Thanks to all those that sent this in.

Personally, I love both 2D and 3D Mario games. Not sure which I like the most. So, for me, whatever it is, I will like it. ^^
Like many other here, I'm disappointed.
I'm tired of these NSMB Games. I really like both of them, cause NSMB on DS
was Mario 2D Comeback and the multiplayer in NSMBWii was fun, the games itself
are lame and there is no pregress.
Why can't they just take their time and try to improve the 2D Mario games, which should
be base on World? The speed, the control, the secrets, Yoshi in evey level!
I miss those things
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I've gotten both NSMB games, at launch, for full price and both were bland and boring. I will not be getting another one. At least not at full price.
It should be 7, World, New DS and New Wii are 4, 5 and 6. Or they should be.
This is disappointing. I love me some 2D Mario and purchased both NSMB and NSMBW at launch but...they're just so uninspired. The aesthetic, the music, the overworld map, it all reeks of lack of ambition. Obviously this is only exacerbated by the fact that, barring multiplayer elements, NSMBW is virtually the exact same game as NSMB with different levels. I'm glad they're making another 2D Mario and I'm sure they'll have some interesting ideas regarding the UPad, but...I really hope they change up the style. It's bland and uninspired and Mario deserves better, especially for the third time in a row. I'll keep my expectations low and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Pretty much this. Plus, who knows, they might have expanded on the concept a bit. I'm hoping it won't be a total clone of NSMB anyway.
I honestly don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, I absolutely loved NSMBWii, the claims of it being boring or uninspired really confuse me... and I was one of the least excited people around here for it before launch. I thought the gameplay was really, REALLY tight and I do not regret paying full price for a second.
But on the other hand, I've played it. It's done. I really don't want anything that could feel like a clone or expansion on the new system. I hope when they say based on the NSMBMii demo, they only mean 'it's a sidescroller and it has co-op' and that the actual game will be a massive overhaul of the formula.

Where in that post I talked about quality? I am talking about business. Go to the market and try to buy somthing and pay with quality. This is about profits. Money. The Videogame market is a business. Both New Super Mario bros games sold more than 50 millions of copys together and with those two games Nintendo made record profits. Did you see Nintendo latest financial report? not a really good sight. They need to sell games and systems son. Both New Super Mario Bros. games are still selling TODAY almost at full price. Both Galaxy games that I agree kick quality wise the hell out of both New Super Mario Bros games are in the bargain bin.
Nintendo is launching a new system and they need to put that system in the hands of a lot of people. For a business standpoint you want them to launch a 3D Mario game to sell maybe 10 millions copys to please the fanboys or sell a 2D Mario game that everyone can play and sell at least 20 millions copys?
By your logic shadow of colossus should have sold at least 30 millions copys and Call of Duty 100,000.
This is not about quality, this is about profits and market share.
@pvrexpress
All true and valid points, but naturally that puts those who would prefer a different take on a Mario than the NSMB theme (such as myself) at an impasse. On the one hand we want Nintendo to do well and to have a strong launch of the system, which would undoubtedly be bolstered by the release of New Super Mario Bros. Mii, but on the other hand we want them to deliver something that deviates from the last two (largely the same) 2D Mario games.
It's a conundrum. That being said, I think we all know the game will be a solid title, and the likelihood is that 90% of the people here will purchase it, myself included. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. That's the Nintendo way.
Alright Nintendo. I admit it. This is legitimately disappointing. I was more than happy letting that bland E3 demo fade into the depths of my memory never to be looked back on again. "New Super Mario Brothers Mii"? Really?
If the game is still called "New Super Mario Brothers Mii" I will be even more disappointed.
If the main draw of the game is still "Mario, but + Mii's now" I will even more disappointed.
If the game still looks like a Wii game like last years demo did I will even more disappointed.
If the general aesthetic is identical to the previous New Super Mario Brothers titles I will be even more disappointed.
However: I am absolutely not beyond the point of believing Nintendo can make this work. The demo we saw a year ago was 1) A demo. 2) A year ago. They've had a solid year to make this thing who knows how much better than it was a year ago.
If it's a completely free pack-in game, All-Stars/64 style. Unlikely, I know. Pack-in software isn't exactly a common occurrence anymore but who knows. People would be far less critical of the game if it came with the console, in my opinion. If they're thinking of charging full price for it that's another story. At the very least if it's available at launch I think people's opinions might change. Regardless of how tired the "NEW Super Mario Brothers" thing is in general, at least we'd have a full length Super Mario Brothers sidescroller at launch which is far more than one can say for the 3DS's launch.
If the gameplay could have just this one change I would buy it, play it, and love it: Let each character play differently from each other. Let Luigi slide around but jump higher than Mario like he used too. Give us Princess Peach and let her float through the air like she could in Super Mario Brothers 2. If she's kidnapped which is no doubt the case, give me Rosalina and I will not complain. I'm sure rideable Yoshi is returning so a playable Yoshi wouldn't make any sense, so Toad can stay but let him play in a unique style. Bring back things from other games in the series like lifting things out of the ground from Mario 2, the running meter from Mario 3, holding onto your power ups for a chance to grab them back after a hit like Super Mario World, etc..
Another avenue this game could take to make it more appealing is to pull out some incredibly clever usage of the Wii-U tablet controller. From what I've heard the console can only support two at the most so I can't imagine it performing any crucial tasks in gameplay. I also don't know how much Nintendo would even use what they come up with considering how infrequently the Wii-Remote was used in NEW Super Mario Brothers Wii which was a real shame. I loved using the Wii-Remote to tilt platforms and stuff but they only used it a handful of times. I'm confident that Nintendo can think of plenty of ways to make things fresh through the new controller.
In the end it will be an excellent game regardless of similarities to New Super Mario Brothers Wii. They always are.
I find it incredibly ironic that your avatar is a piece of artwork saying "Made in the Eighties" showing Mario promo art from, guess what, classic 2D Mario games. And word to the wise, if anything is for "casuals", I would argue that Mario Galaxy, or "3D Mario", is. The 2D Mario games, including the NSMB games, in general get a lot harder in the later levels. Galaxy 2 did indeed go out of it's way to provide a few levels with some almost obscene difficulty, but overall the game was still very "casual friendly", if you're going to be like that. And besides, it couldn't possibly be that people just genuinely love classic 2D Mario platforming, could it? Nope. Has to be that "them casuals" that made NSMB sell so well.
Review scores aren't everything, and don't a great game make. Of COURSE Galaxy WAS a great game. But so is NSMBWii. I find the notion that many are espousing in here that somehow NSMBWii was lacking in quality, compared to the Galaxy games, to be insulting to my intelligence. Personally, I thought the game was perfect, and as someone who had been waiting for around TWO DECADES for a new 2D console Mario, I was thrilled to have it. To me, the DS game, while decent, was "meh". The Wii game was precisely what I wanted out of 2D Mario, and it felt to me like the closest we might ever get to a real SMB5. I'm not really sure why some folks in here have this attitude that "Man, I want something NEW from Mario". For one thing, not a single one of you know for a fact that we're NOT getting "Something new from Mario", and for another, not a single one of you actually even know for a fact what this game really is going to be or be ABOUT. You'd think more 2D Mario would get people excited, seeing as how so many claim to be huge fans of the old games. Yet all I seem to see is rampant b*tching about how "We wanted a new 3D Mario!!!". So who says you're NOT still getting one? It just, as I said before, can't POSSIBLY be ready until 2013 at the earliest, considering Mario 3D Land JUST came out last year. So in the meantime, you're getting a new 2D Mario, which is bound to be awesome, and fun as hell. Yeah.....with Nintendo it really does seem to be "Damned if you do, damned if you don't", but I think that's more Nintendo themselves, because no matter what they do, some "Fans" still b*tch and moan incessantly (while in this kind of case not having any real info to go by on what they're actually b*tching ABOUT).
We're getting a 2D Mario right out of the gate for Wii U. If it's a launch title, it'll be the first Nintendo console to launch with a TRADITIONAL 2D Mario game since the SNES. I think that's pretty damn cool, as someone who, as your avatar alludes, was "Made in the 80s.", myself.
I'm all for an actual new 2d mario, that's actually you know, new. not a rehash of NSBM. and can they stop calling it 'new' already?
And again, until proven otherwise, there is Zero proof from a snippet of info from a Miyamoto interview, that says it WON'T be new. People are having heart attacks over literally nothing. And this kind of phenonmenon on the internet gets old. People get emotionally besides themselves over gaming "news", even when, in situations like this, the "news" they're so upset about is so insubstantial in it's actual details, that they're crying for literally nothing.
I say, people need to just calm the hell down and wait to see what this game actually IS, before saying "SCREW IT, I'M NOT EVEN BUYING A Wii U NOW, Nintendo BETRAYED ME!" etc. etc. etc. Patience is a virtue. So is keeping an open mind.
Very true, but don't you think it's interesting to how people react to the hypothetical situation that the new game IS closely related to what we saw last year? In this run-up to E3 there isn't a whole lot to talk about, so anything that gets conversation flowing is a good thing. That being said I agree with you; there is very little evidence that what we see will look like NSMBW beyond the demo we saw at E3. The problem is there is even less evidence saying it won't be.
Like I said earlier, it's gonna sell, and it's gonna be solid. Although I think if it is taking the NSMB theme to appeal to a wider audience, coming as a pack-in with the system and using the UPad in interesting ways may be the best way to bolster the launch of the system. Of course, whether Nintendo is willing to pack-in a title that will sell well on it's own is debatable.
@Poopaloop
I absolutely agree with the concept that something that gets people talking and having an actual conversation is nothing but a good thing. Problem is, I'm not seeing too many people interested in having a conversation. I just see a dogpile of complaining over something that no one even knows is a fact, as of yet. That being that "all we're getting is a cheaply done NSMBWii type game". That seems to be the consensus, and it's more than a bit bewildering and disheartening. People are welcome to their own opinions, but we haven't even seen a single pic or shred of footage or game detail as of yet to make any judgements on......so people freaking out over nothing seems rather silly to me.
@Devil_Rising
Well, can't argue with that.
What I would like everyone to keep in mind is that the reason we love Nintendo is that they manage to keep their franchises from becoming stale after all these years and however many iterations each one goes through. Whilst I really would prefer a departure from the NSM aesthetic (it never really gelled with me in the first place, to be honest), I for one will rest easy in the belief that even if the new game does share the same theme, Nintendo will imbue enough new ideas to keep the game fresh, especially with a new hardware 'gimmick' to work with.
OK, I'll admit we have had cash ins such as Animal Crossing City Folk, which in my eyes was unforgiveable, but you have to remember that this is a system launch. After the 3DS Nintendo know now more than ever that they need to get this right. I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised come E3, but if you're unhappy with what they show, by all means vote with your wallets. You're consumers after all, and you are not obliged to buy anything. By the same line of thinking however, Nintendo are not OBLIGED to provide us with any specific product we may want.
If it looks and plays exactly like that demo from last year, I'll pass.
I think we all know that Super Mario Galaxy 3 is coming to the Wii U, it must happen. I also hope that this game can become the New Super Mario World. I remenber when Pokemon Black and white 2 was announced for the DS. At that moment I thought that the game should be 3DS only and I was really angry with Nintendo. But that time has passed and now I understand that Nintendo made the right choice. They need a lot of money to invest in games that we all want to play like Mario Galaxy 3 and Pokemon 3DS.
The thing is, they did not say "we are making a 2D mario game". They said that it is "based" on New Super Mario Brothers Mii. That means it's a 4 player co-op Mario game, with Miis. Apart from the fact that Miis in a Mario platforming game is a terrible idea, IMHO, that doesn't tell much. Still, It'll probalby be the same engine, with perhaps better models, obviously better textures, and also, for the first time (because TEV are not exactly that) shaders. So the game will look better, could have great power-ups, great music, etc... but it'll still be basically NSMBWii with new maps in a shinier package.
Mario World was different enough from Bros.3, and what we've seen so far from NSMBMii is not different enough from the Wii version, and thus it's not really convincing.
The fact that they're possibly making a Super Mario Bros. 4 on 3DS is also strange. They could be making a "brand new game", after the amazing 3D Land, whereas the WiiU just has a sequel to a Wii title ?
World was amazing and showed what the SNES was capable of. Same for 64. I'm not sure NSMBMii, if it is based on the NSMB engine could show that. 3D models in a 2D world are nice and everything, but take a look at Donkey Kong Country Returns. Everything is just more lively.
Perhaps it'll be something completely new, all of you who are saying that there is no reason to worry are right, because we're not in the secret. Yet, it's surprising that they specify that it is "based" on the e3 demo.
If they wanted to say that it was a 2D Mario, they would have said exactly that.
I'm sorry.. but I said nothing about disliking 2D Mario. what was the point of your long post to attack me for not stating something I didn't?.
And by the way I don't have a problem with 2D Mario and I have not moaned about not getting no 3D Mario just yet because we only had SM3DL back in November last year and believe it or not I'm not some kind of idiot who thinks a new 3D Mario title can be produced every bloody year.
Actually I approve wholeheartedly for a new Side-scrolling Mario for the Wii U launch, especially if it is going to be named Super Mario 4.
My point I made was to the sly remarks about sales, I don't care about sales, to me it's bloody shallow. if the game is great then thats all I care about.
You are preaching to the converted.
Please update the graphics, Ninty. NSMBWii was uninspired by Nintendo standards.
Cool I can't wait I hope it comes out at Nintendo Wii U launch
I hope you're wrong on that mark. I really don't want or need to see/play another Mario Galaxy. Nintendo isn't Activision. Them putting out a direct sequel to Galaxy was an unusual move on their part, and one that I still personally maintain was wholly unnecessary, even IF it is a good game. I would hope and trust that Nintendo will give us a completely different experience from Galaxy when we do see the next 3D Mario game.
@FatFace83
Hmmmm. Must've misread that then. It IS the internet. In that case, my bad. Cheers.
No, we do not, and it had actually been said recently that they're not really into doing another Galaxy sequel.
Nintendo needs to create a fresh 3D Mario experience for the Wii U. The Super Mario Galaxy series should be done.
