GoNintendo Nightly: The Best, Worst and Weirdest Nintendo News of April 23rd, 2012

I'm kicking off a brand-new feature on GoNintendo, and it's going to be a Monday-through-Friday sort of thing. Sure, it's more work, but you guys are worth it!

I'll be taking a look at 3 stories each night. One that I find to be the 'best' of the day, one that seems like it was the worst bit of news and the last being completely weird and strange. It's a simple premise that I'm sure to expand as the show rolls along.

Please let me know what you think about the idea and first episode!

Shorten the name to GN Nightly (or leave it as it is).

By the way, where did you get the book cases for the games?
I need somethi like that.

Nice, saw this over on Facebook. It's interesting to see what you think about the stories considering you hafta stay pretty objective when you're posting them!

And I'm still pitching 'Rawmeat Roundup'. I'll draw the crap out of a banner where your beard is lassoing the logo.

I came here to suggest "It came from the Beard" - A RMC Production.

also, never wear dark shirts, they obscure the beard.

Hahah, weird you would pitch those B-Movie sounding names; I had a concept for one of the podcast images a while ago I never bothered using:

More movies need to have cheesy titles like that.

(Also, 'GO to Bed'?)

RMC, let's get realistic about analysts for a minute. There's this bizarre prevailing idea on this site, and just now from you, ("analysts love to pummel Nintendo") that there is this secret conspiracy among analysts to destroy Nintendo. It's silly.

Analysts are people who are payed to study sales and market trends and predict what will happen next in the industry. Sometimes they are wrong. People on this site think they are wrong a LOT, and that's fine. But do you REALLY think all these analysts say what they do just because they hate Nintendo? I swear, Nintendo fans have a persecution complex.

One other misconception brought is the idea that the machine with the lowest specs in each generation has traditionally been the "winner". You really have to examine the idea of what a "winner" is.

If we look at flat-out console unit sales, yeah, Wii was the "winner". But technology and game sales have affected whether or not developers make games for the system, and low specs make Wii the loser of this generation where third-party game selection is concerned. It also makes Wii the loser in online functionality, digital distribution, and downloadable content selection. I know DLC is the "boogeyman" right now, but I'd much rather have it as an option than not at all, or a very poor selection like on the Wii.

So either we can keep patting ourselves on the back with those console sales numbers, or we can realize that Nintendo's decision to go with weaker hardware has handicapped them and affected Wii owners in turn.

By the way, I do like the idea of your video. It's something I look forward to in the future. Hopefully you intended it as something to foster discussion, because that's how I saw it.

Great idea RMC... The only thing I would like to be better is the overall production-quality in terms of sound and visual. Ither then that I did enjoy this very much!

@Hawk

The fact that most (not all) analysts have been predicting nothing but doom and gloom for nintendo for the past 5 years (which nintendo have completely dominated in terms of hardware sales, except for maybe 2011 and 2012 so far) leaves me to believe that there is no way in hell that these analysts are impartial and are focusing strictly on doing their job. A good majority of them, clearly hate nintendo, they don't want to be impressed by nintendo, they don't want nintendo to be the ones leading the industry forward, they want nintendo to go bust and will continue to predict their downfall so that when (and if) that day finally comes, they can take pride in saying that they eventually got it right.

and it's been about everything including hardware sales (which as everyone knows, nintendo completely dominated this whole gen), they said they were doomed when microsoft and sony announced their motion controllers, the 3DS has been doomed for a long time now and the Wii U is doomed before its specs and software lineup have been revealed.

Whether or not the wii met it's true potential and has the biggest library of solid games is a completely different matter, as a business they have been VERY successful in the last gen yet analysts who claim to focus on sales and what they genuinely think will happen after interpreting sales data and what not (as opposed to what they hope will happen) clearly seem to let their extreme bias in the way of their jobs, it's absolutely mind blowing to me how an analyst who is wrong on so many occasions and right on so few occasions (i.e most of them) can retain their job without their boss or whoever questioning their reliability.

Good idea RMC. If you're down for doing this daily (well... nightly) while keeping it around five minutes, I'll watch it every night.

Well, I'm not sure I'll be able to change your mind on those topics, though I do appreciate the good and open discussion. I guess all I can say is I'm a bit more optimistic regarding analysts than most people are on this site, and a bit more pessimistic on the alleged success of the Wii.

Trust me I'm very pessimistic on the success of the Wii as a whole, so many missed opportunities from both nintendo and third parties and it will sadly be remembered not by games like skyward sword, metroid prime 3 and super mario galaxy, but by crap like carnival games, just dance and all the shovelware that overshadowed the great titles.

However the job of an analyst isn't to predict whether or not us gamers are going to be satisifed with the console, they are predicting how well nintendo will do as a business, and again, I refuse to believe that at least 50% of them don't hate nintendo.

I will admit that some nintendo fans (including many on this website) cry "NINTENDO HATER" whenever anyone dares to criticize nintendo, and most of the times it just pathetic (look below), but there are a few occasions where it is true, and I think this is one of those few times.

Analysts, reviewers, any kind of game industry "professionals" are a joke. They are a joke that get paid to keep on joking.

Love it! Great idea and great video. And great music.

The only suggestion I can think of is to occasionally mix up the host. I love RMC's videos and his commentary, but for his sake (getting some nights off video wise) and to maybe help further build the community, have cort, tduck, one of the podcast crew etc. alternate videos every once in a while.

Also, I second 'GoNintendo Nightly: The Good, the Bad, and the Beard.'

I love this very much! This should be fun. Here are my thoughts/suggestions:

How are these stories being 'chosen'? Are they just by what you deem to be the 'best', 'worst', and 'weirdest' stories, RMC? If that's the case, that's fine but I would like to see it be more based on what we, as readers, vote to be 'good' and 'bad'. We have a + and - vote tally for every single story. I think the best story of the day should be the one with the most positive score, the worst story should be the one with the most negative score, and the weirdest could just be the one that you, RMC, found to be random or strange. Presumably, the stories with more votes (good or bad) have, in general, more comments and by extension, more discussion. Having you, RMC, add your voice to the discussion on those 'hot' stories through the video could be really interesting.

All that said, I have some reservations as well. I have no doubt that you want to do this every single night RMC but there are some nights when you don't even put up an End of Day Thought. If this series is supposed to be a supplement to that and not a replacement, I could see you getting burned out really quick. You take on whatever you can handle RMC but I'd rather see this be an 'every other night' or 'twice a week' video series than be every single day if you struggle to find stories or if doing one every day turns out to be taxing. I guess I'm saying I'd rather have a few set nights where we KNOW we will be getting a video (and some nights where we KNOW we won't get one) over every night being hit or miss. I have all reason to believe that you are excited to do this video series (I'm excited to watch!) but I don't want this to lose its charm after a month because it has become a lot of work for you.
Secondly, these need to be 10 minutes MAX MAX MAX. Today was just the right length and had a good pace. These should be short, sweet, and to the point. Any longer than 10 minutes and these will start to feel like a chore for you to create and for us (me) to watch.

I'm not trying to be hostile with my suggestions or insinuate that this is a terrible idea, in fact, it's quite the opposite - I smiled as soon as I saw this on the site today because it is a fantastic idea and I really hope this series can develop. I just wanted to add my thoughts on what I, personally, would like to see out of the show.

I can't wait for more!

P.S. Oh, and links within this story to the stories mentioned would be great so we can easily find what you are talking about!

I love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love this idea. I always wished you guys would talk more about the week's stories on the podcast, and this is even better. Getting some podcast crew memebers to make guest appearances and thoughts would be better still.

@Hawk
The thing about analysts is that no matter how many disruptive technologies Nintendo puts out they will always say ''Nintendo will fail''. I mean after the Wii and DS, and with Iwata as president you'd think they would change their tune. They act as if Yamauchi is still calling the shots

And these hallowed third party games are overrated anyways.
I've had more joy playing Ninty's first party offerings this gen than any generation before this one. Including Super Nintendo and N64.
And Nintendo didn't handicap themselves with weaker hardware. Games like Mario Galaxy can compete toe to toe quality wise with games on more sophisticated hardware no problem.
