No, my point is very clear: Xenoblade's graphics do not hold up to what is available elsewhere right now, whereas FFVII's graphics did. This is to Xenoblade's detriment, and ultimately, the Wii's. It would have been *fantastic* is this charge could not be levelled against Xenoblade, because gameplay-wise, it is one of the best experiences to be had this gen.
I'm loving this more and more each day. Thanks RMC!
Oh, and please NEVER stop adding the outtakes to the end of the video.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who genuinely thought and thinks Xenoblade looks pretty fine. Not the "I've never seen HD graphics" kind of fine or "Why you guys mad at a game I like!", but the kind that cringes on opinions that'd rank Xenoblade "bad" even among Wii standards. Hooking the game up with a component cable on an HDTV, while correctly adjusting the Wii's system settings made me think "Pretty slick for a Wii game." more than "Ewww. And that's all the game can do?". Granted there was the "Guys, your eyes are freaking scary, stop eating my soul." phase, until I adjusted with the character design.
Surely it doesn't compare to your common HD standards, but you'd think these sorts of comparisons are kind of mundane by now.
With all that drama I'm somewhat sadistically looking forward to US-reviews and more profound opinions of The Last Story. A game that supposedly "looks better", but pays it with the ultimate price of going "Framerate? What's a framerate?" literally around every other corner, in a way that genuinely impedes the gameplay experience and makes you ask "Why on earth is this game on the Wii if it can't handle it?". Especially when running it makes the Wii sound even more of a grinder than when running Xenoblade.
Other than that, this new corner definitely is a nice addition to swarm up some Youtube attention/clicks/views/guests. If...one considers this a good pool to fish in.
First time i watch the show, and well, it's cool. I am going to watch it dealy now. It's quite funny and RMC you are sooooo zen!
I really like what you say about the Wii and Xenoblade. And you know what? It's going all over again with the WiiU!
You are too good to us, RMC.
For the Hogan Family intro alone I have subscribed to your YT channel. These are getting better with each one RMC! Keep em coming. Next intro should be Small Wonder, with your face photoshopped onto the girl robot's body.
Pretty great so far, I like watching these every morning. I'd just like to throw my two cents in... the worst stories for all three videos so far consisted of people talking smack at Nintendo, and there's definitely been a little fanboy involved in picking those (and on news posts on the site itself). Probably the only one I would legitimately see as a 'worst story' is the one about Crytek not making games for the Wii U (yesterday's video). I would think we all would be used to haters on Nintendo by now, but I guess not. I would suggest giving 'worst news' that actually matters in the end for gamers - things like studio X not supporting Wii U after all, or game Y that got delayed, not completely irrelevant football player Z rants on Xenoblade Chronicles.
I don't know if any news for the 23rd and the 25th was like that, but I'm sensing a strong anti-anti-Nintendo sentiment while picking worst news topics.
Oh, and +1 for Pulled From The Beard.
Hahah, great, I really like how this show is evolving. The intros are a great idea, the worse the special effects, the more entertaining it is!
Also, you should call it the GoNintendo Cooldown. Then you can cobble together some audio clips saying 'GO''nintendo' 'cooooodownnn...'
So Skyward Sword is a "waggle-fest" and Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 are garbage because they don't have enough pixels.
Sure Xenoblade is no graphical marvel, but does it actually make people angry to look at it? Was it physically impossible for said person to play a video game without exploding into nerdrage before 2010?
It's one thing to say that Xenoblade's graphics suffered due to being on the Wii and another to say that the Wii is a stupid system that has ruined every single Nintendo game and everything that has come out for it sucks because of it in nerdrage and fanboy bile.
It's because of it's completely unprofessional style and hate mongering in the opinion, not the opinion itself.
Oh, RMC, here's an idea:
You should link to the three stories you mentioned in your post!
My issue with the GI article is how very unprofessional the article comes off. The man's choice of wording and whatnot feels more like something I'd expect to hear from a CHARACTER like the Angry Video Game Nerd or Nostalgia Critic, who use hyperbole and extreme exaggeration for comedic effect. This man sounded like he was being serious regarding the usage of phrases like "take a 12 gauge to my TV" and "mail a unicorn head to Nintendo."
If his phrasing had been more professional and sound less like something I may read on 4chan, then I would have simply been like "I disagree with this man's opinion, but at least he was professional about listing his grievances," but because of his choice of words I simply groan and ask myself "is this really what 'journalism' has devolved to in this day and age?"
I would like to add a personal opinion regarding the graphical quality of FFVII: for 1997, no I do not think FFVII was a very good looking game. The graphics of games like Mario 64, Goldeneye, Crash Bandicoot, Star Fox 64 were superior to that of FFVII. The fact the developers attempted to recreate the "chibi sprite" style in 3D is one of the major issues. The "chibi sprites in 3D" look flat out ugly, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are not as impressive looking as the later PS1 Final Fantasy games. Even the battle graphics are better looking in games like FFIX than they are in VII. However, regardless of it's ugliness, I still found FFVII to be quite fun.
Unlike FFVII, I feel the only real graphical weakness Xenoblade suffers from is having character models that could have easily been done on a PS2 in 2006 (I compare them to the models of Final Fantasy XII). The effects, draw distance, and the look of the environments are quite beautiful by the standards of the Wii console. Even Game Informer's OFFICIAL review of Xenoblade (in which the game earned a 9.5 out of 10) stated that the environments and draw distance would have been JUST as impressive on an HD console.
A game will be best remembered for how fun it is in the years to come, not its graphics, because, lets face it, who here can honestly still look back at games on the N64, PS1, and Sega Saturn and say they still look good today? Eventually there will be a day when the games of the PS3 and 360 will be considered "old and outdated." It may take a good while before we can say that, but it will happen eventually.
Awesome job RMC, I love the bloopers. Though, you look really tired, you should get some rest.
@Stubo http://www.destructoid.com/why-xenoblad ... 6518.phtml
Here you go. Also, Final fantasy 7 looks like @ss. Games like ocarina of time, Banjo kaxooie, and conquer's bad fur day looked leagues ahead of it despite being from the same generation. Oh, just like what you are complaining about with Xenoblade being on the Wii
The takeaway here:
It's okay to be a fanboy in GoNintendo articles, but not in Game Informer reviews!
I just happen to think the guy who wrote that article is entitled to his opinions, even though he wrote them in a highly unprofessional way. I don't think he's 100% wrong. The horsepower of the Wii has hurt Nintendo in some ways. I also think Nintnedo HAS pissed away a lot of its efforts on casual gamers. And the main point where I think he's right? The Wii is REALLY showing its age. Many of us have grown accustomed to the visuals of the HD consoles, and this late in the Wii's life it's just extra apparent.
However, no matter how right or wrong the author was, his points are practically moot now. If this article was written before our knowledge of the WiiU, there would be purpose to his words. But now? Just shut and wait for the WiiU, buddy. It's coming.
Hmmmm, suggestions for classic intros...Legends of the Hidden Temple please.
But it didn't because of graphics, FFVII's lowest point? Congratulations, you just proved why Xenoblade is this gen's FFVII.
Let's all call it that from now on. I'm not even joking.
@AnoukiAgentYellow
I don't know if I missed something, but I don't recall the guy saying every game on Wii sucked.
His wording is bad, but he was just saying that the games could have looked better.
And a lot of the games *are* plagued by gimmicky controls whether people want to admit it or not.
Skyward Sword often felt like it was trying to sell me Wii Sports Resort starring Link. Still love that game, though.
@LegendofSantiago
For the record, Final Fantasy VII came outin 1997.
OoT and Banjo came out in 1998 and Conker's from 2001.
Of course Conker looks leagues ahead. FF7 was already 4 years old already.
However, I'm not here to argue with you if FF7 looks like ass or not. Just saying, it was an older game. When it came out, it looked crazy. Specifically, I think people remember the FMVs and battle graphics (which were actually good). The overworld looked like crap, but that's because it was mostly pre-rendered.
@Eternal Rain
I accept this.
However, I must note, some PS2 graphics were ahead of their time.
Silent Hill 3's model+texture combo look infinitely better than Xenoblade's.
@zeeroid
This!
I know the stories he is talking about, but he should put the annotations (I think?) on the video when he mentions a story.
@Red
You have a point.
Thing is, the game is also 2 years old (older if we're going by how long they were making it, and the fact they didn't change the graphics this whole time. The fruit in Colony 9's shop area is still a flat sheet of colors), people are comparing it to 2012 games, which isn't fair (or 2011, like Skyward Sword).
And at the heart of it, the game is HUGE and has next to no loading. Regardless of how the models or textures look when you are right up in their business, the game looks amazing for a Wii game and it simply would not have been done the same if it were bumped to Wii U for better graphics, and I bet it would have suffered a lot and had to cut down on things if it looked better.
Granted, you could argue that waiting for a more polished product would be worth it, and it would, but you have to wonder if they would've had the same freedom. Or if the game would get changed due to the new controller.
Sure, there are some 2009 Wii games that look better (and even some earlier) in regards to the models/textures, but they are also not the same scale.
A similar comparison would be Grand Theft Auto games on PS2. They look like ass. They look horrendous, but the cities were HUGE and constantly moving.
Xenoblade even has people on schedules. At the end of the day, Xenoblade is an amazing feat.
Depending on how you look at it, Wii either hindered it from looking amazing, or is the only reason it IS so amazing.
@mock turtle
It's not hypocrisy. You're missing the point.
Final Fantasy VII looked good to tons of people when it came out in 1997. Regardless of what you thought back then, the majority of people thought it looked amazing. Almost specifically because of the FMVs, but the random battle graphics were also good at the time.
Xenoblade Chronicles, graphically (and I mean characters/textures), looked outdated day one. This is the case now and when it came out in Japan in 2010.
There are other RPGs and games on Wii that came out before Xenoblade (and before the NA release) that all look better.
On PlayStation 1, nothing that came out before it really looked better or even close.
Sure, you could say Super Mario 64 looked better, but that follows your Gaga example. That's an N64 game, and the N64 had better graphics than the PS1.
Final Fantasy VII looks bad now, but people remember it looking good when it came out.
Xenoblade has mediocre models now, and people are going to remember it looking mediocre and it will still look mediocre or bad in the future.
Having said that, if you read what I said above my reply to you, you can see I don't actually have a problem with Xenoblade's graphics and think that the game looks amazing for what they had to work with.
I'm just explaining where Stubo was coming from.
@Mario1234567
Adam Sessler was the only good thing about G4.
So the good news of the day for you is that G4 lost the last thing resembling a gamer meaning it's an even worse channel now?
Oh, but I suppose it's good news when you hate people who don't love every Nintendo/Wii game.
It is ridiculous to talk about second-party titles the way he talked about XBC...
this feature is getting better and better
It did say that Nintendo's franchises have been ruined due to the fact that they don't have the horsepower to be good and have to rely on gimmicks to sell. It does not say that Skyward Sword is a good game but has some gimmicks, it says that Skyward Sword is not a good game and Nintendo has to use gimmicks to trick people into buying it.
Ooooooh...I really like this idea. Maybe I could talk to an animator. Maybe I could film it in real life! Maybe I should start taking fan intro suggestions...
You look so damn tired in these videos. XD
@Jirachi Those games are great....but 2 of those games you can get on the PS3....which I have. I do really hope for better support. That is when I'll get it.
Thank god my comment wasn't violated by you @RawmeatCowboy.
(I was scared there for a second.)
I guess that Xenoblade reviewer guy hasn't heard about the Wii U...
Great segment RMC! You spoil us with high quality intros and special effects and whatnot. Keep up the good work!
