BOSTON -- The global TV games console market will drop by 19 percent in 2012, according to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service, “Global TV Games Console Outlook: a Transitional Year Awaiting a New Wave.” The report projects a decline in global Xbox 360 sales 13.8 million units in 2012; and PS3 sales will also fall, to 13 million units. Nintendo is fully focused on preparing for the upcoming Wii U release; however, even the launch of the new Wii U will not save Nintendo, or the industry, from this downward trend.
Additionally, this recent Strategy Analytics ConsumerMetrix survey shows that users of Sony’s PS3 games console showed the highest level of usage frequency, topping its two major competitors. Forty-four percent of PS3 owners use their console on at least a weekly basis, in contrast to 40 percent of weekly Xbox 360 users and 30 percent of Wii users.
“Last year, Xbox 360 sales beat PS3 globally, despite its relative weakness outside the US. However, Strategy Analytics research indicates that PS3 is slightly more popular among core gamers than Xbox 360,” comments report author, Jia Wu, Director in the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service. “On the other hand, Xbox 360 appeals to a broader audience, as more consumers buy the Microsoft console for non-gaming as well as gaming functions.”
“Sales figures alone do not determine winners in this generation’s console competition,” adds Kantideep Thota, Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Wii has sold the highest number of games consoles cumulatively; but Sony’s and Microsoft’s advancement in online game distribution and cross-platform integration grants them higher user engagement and a solid foundation for the next generation console war.”

and this is why many nintendo fans ignore news like this.
I like extrapolation, it's fun. and entirely useless. Everything is down. it's the end of a generation.
Nothing grows forever.
Even if wii u flops, and wii u and mii(lol joke name for wii 3) nintendo still won't be in any serious trouble. hell people forget n64 and gamecube didn't sell too well and yet nintendo survived.
The whole phone gaming thing is a fad eventually people will realise that they what an experience that last longer then 5 minutes, when they do they will flock to either nintendo sony or ms.
more tolling
Come on everybody, say it with me:
"Nintendo is doooooooomed! Doooooooooomed!"
Do we need any more analyst brain farting? :/
I'll put a creative spin here:
"This site is trolllllllled! Trollllllllllled!"
Man I need to get a job as an Analyst so I can make up crap and get paid for it.
Though I personally don't like gaming on my phone, I'm pretty sure it's not a fad. Mobile gaming has been around since before the iPhone and it will only continue.
O M F G - I am tired of this "Anal--yst" view that Nintendo is Doomed, Nintendo is dying, Mobile gaming is killing Nintendo, ohhhh ahhhh waaaaaah!!!
Well no crap sales are down and will be as the economy sucks and nobody has money to buy anything.
Wii U is going to explode not implode (in a good way) - watch what the "anal--ysts" say after E3 I bet they will flip-flop right around saying "Omeeegawd, TeH Nintendo Wii U Prints TeH Money!!"
Nintendo is Doooooooooooooooooooomed!
I'm starting to be come embarrassed for them, which is quite a feat.
Haven't they been saying this since the Clinton years?
Wow, another wrong person. There are so many wrong people, I want to see an analyst that is right for once.
It's normal for the market to contract at this point in the console cycle. It's not news at all, and it's not a sign of bad things to come. When the new consoles are out and as their libraries grow, sales will lead to a 3 or 4 year bubble again. Rinse and repeat.
Also, it should be noted that this current cycle we're in has been incredibly successful compared to the PSone/N64 and PS2/Xbox/GCN generations. This cycle saw all three console companies reach over 60 million and counting in install base. That's insane. So now that that bubble is bursting, people shouldn't be surprised that the market is contracting to pre-2006 levels.
I thought it was pretty clear that the PS3 was more popular in general.. The 360 only sells more in America, no?
Nintendo needs saving?¿?¿?

LMFAO X'D
lololololololololololololololololololololololol
That is correct. And the difference in sales between Europe and NA is made up for because PS3 sells well in Japan, and 360 doesn't even register on the radar over there.
Analysts who are supposed to know at least something about the game industry need to wake up and realize Nintendo is coming off their best selling handheld and console systems, they beat both their competitors in sales by a large margin, they do not need saving. This is seriously getting old.
I understand that these analysts probably have families to look after, but if a reviewer can get fired for giving his opinion, it would be a crime to not fire these idiots who have failed to do their jobs properly for the past 5 years. It just would't be fair on the rest of the world.
To me, the only REAL problem Nintendo needs to be saved from is from bad (probably biased) analysts and biased press/developers saying that Nintendo won't be successful with the Wii U, spewing doom and gloom bs to a console that's not even been released yet, that want to see Nintendo's demise and they should forget the console race and go 3rd party.
This article is 100% right. Wii U can't save Nintendo. Cant save something that doesn't need saved.
Apparently these guys don't remember Nintendo being successful with a third place Gamecube.
People will buy Nintendo games by the truckloads and Nintendo can easily survive on them alone. I don't think they are content with just surviving, but if they wanted to go 64 dream team again, they very well could. It may not produce a mainstream billion selling console, but they will profit just like they have with all their systems('cept maybe virtual boy, but i don't know.)
I'm not saying Nintendo can't fail, that would be dumb. Just as dumb as saying the Wii U has to somehow save Nintendo.
2/10 troll made me reply
So basically what they're saying is this console gen lasting 6 years for Nintendo (7+ for Microsoft and possibly Sony) has nothing to do with the consoles sales.
Let me put it like this, there are only so many homes video game consoles are going to make it into and when other devices are producing the same visuals as the current consoles and PC's that can play games decently go for around the price of PS3/360 when they first launched, it's definitely time for new systems.
Analysts need to do a better job analyzing.
"Wii U can't save Nintendo" - Save? WTF!? dfbsjjfhddgd
