A look at various Metroid titles over the years has brought us to Metroid Prime: Hunters, which took its sweet time getting out on the DS. With that said, it looks like there was a ton of content that just never made it out into the final release. Enemies, design choices and event animations that were cut. You can check out all those goodies at the link below.
At the link, you'll also find some very interesting Metroid art that never made it into any game we've ever seen. This artwork comes from a former Nintendo Software Technology Studio employee, and while it doesn't mean anything was in development, it's certainly interesting to see what might have been.

Interesting. The concept of a "Toon Metroid" interests me greatly. It'd have to be heavily stylized and 2D. Like Shank.
I'd love to see what someone like Han Randhawa or Todd McFarlane could do with something like that.
That was such a good read. I love those threads.
And I actually feel nostalgic about Metroid Prime Hunters. So many people hate the game around me, so many people DO NOT KNOW its strengths... it's obvious his Single-player mode was awful, but the multiplayer? Holy crap was it good.
Not as interesting as the other parts, but still pretty good stuff in there.
That thread just reminded me how awful the single player was for Metroid Prime Hunters. What a terrible SP game.
Not really liking the look of that "Toon Metroid" thing.
I have to say, it's a serious nostalgia trip looking over the 'Combat Hall' map. Does anyone else remember playing against their friends on [First Hunt]? Incredible memories. I happened to be lucky enough to know three people to play against.
Lol, why is Samus on an acid trip?
Not so much Toon Metroid as a Metroid involving drugs.
I like the goofy space pirate though. That's a "toon" Metroid style.
That first so called toon Metroid pic looks like what COULD have been Metroid Prime's fusion with Samus' suit.
I finally beat MPH the other day. It's not a great game, but I found it to be technically very impressive in that it was aiming to bring a similar aesthetic to a DS game as had already been seen on the GC.
As a Metroid game, it falls short, as a hand held shooter, especially considering it's time of release, it's one of the best (and still the best controlled hand held FPS to date.)
The ship battle artwork is gorgeous. Iirc, the artist also did the beautiful concept art for DKCR.
Damn Samus! You look beat the hell up
Hunters was easily the weakest of the Prime games due to its rather forgettable single player campaign, like others said. (Hell, even adding "Prime" to the name didn't make much sense.) But it's still cool to see of the artwork behind it.
@Hamr
That's what I thought too, hahaha.
