Reader Poever emailed Nintendo customer service to try and figure out what's up with the 3DS VC releases in the states. There have been a number of games made available in other parts of the world, but NA seems to get slim pickings. What's the big holdup?
Thanks for letting us know your feelings about the amount of virtual content on the Nintendo eShop. Unfortunately, we do not have any information about why there have not been as many Game Boy Virtual Console downloads recently. We average about ten new titles per month between the online shops between the Wii, Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo 3DS. This means that there may be weeks where only one new downloadable game per system is released.
That said, I'm happy to forward your comments to the appropriate people so that your feedback will be heard. I want to assure you that we take all feedback into consideration.
Sincerely,
Alex Schuster

I'm not doubting that the customer service reps are in the dark. I just wish we could get an explanation from someone higher up.

When I did the surveys for the ambassador games on Club Nintendo, I pointed out they need more releases in every single one of them.
I think what they need to do is stop limiting release on thursdays and allow for any game at any time.
It really shouldn't be difficult to emulate GB or GBC and even GBA games onto the 3DS. I honestly have no idea why Nintendo is being so lazy about their VC releases, for not just the Wii but also the 3DS as well. Sure the Wii is dying soon but at least give us the original Star Fox, Battletoads, Turtles in Time, DKC64, and freaking EARTHBOUND. Seriously Nintendo, there is no good excuse as to you why you have to withhold these games for so long. We DONT want those crappy games that no one played back in the day, we DONT a similar stagnation in releases for the VC on the 3DS and we DO NOT WANT a repeat on the Wii U if there is going to be a similar thing. Get your stuff together Nintendo and give us those bloody VC games we want! Sorry for the rant but I am sick and tired of Nintendo beating around the bush and not giving us a good answer. I wish companies could be just a little more open about things like these and give us a straight answer.
@The Fatal Ninja@Syrek
I agree, couldn't Nintendo view their digital release and put it out with 10-20 or even more a week? Would this be another Wii's leaky faucet? By that I mean only good releases through launch and almost nothing after that. Yeah, Mutant Mudds, Colors 3D, Pushmo, etc. are good, but not enough I'd like to see more games for eShop. Also I still want that Flipnote Memo/Studio.
They're going to drag it out for a few reasons.
1. Releasing too many titles at one time and the smaller ones will get overshadowed by the bigger ones. Sure they
will all still be there for the rest of the systems life but you really want gamers to really know every little title that's on there. The only way to do that is to stagger releases.
2. They have YEARS of time to fill. If they release everything now, or release in larger batches over the first year or so and run out of titles to publish, then what will happen to the 3DS VC? Will they end up just going in circles trying to push titles that are already out there? And then everyone would complain that the 3DS VC was dead for the rest of its lifetime.
3. There may be emulation issues with any given title that makes it less likely to see release simply because Nintendo may not see the possibility of recouping their investment. If Nintendo thinks they aren't going to make what they think they should, they're not going to do it.
4. They're Nintendo (easy answer).
The question was about the 3DS VC, not eShop. That's a completely different animal and requires a completely different way of thinking. And a number of those titles you listed Nintendo has no control over. They can't force other companies to make eShop games.
Ugh, not this again
"NINTENDO DOESNT RELEASE GAMES FOR US!!!!!!!"
Nintendo releases tons of titles in short period of time after complaints
"NINTENDO HAS NO MORE GAMES WII SHOP CHANNEL IS DEAD"
...And this is going to happen if people keep complaining.
Even WITH tons of games in some sort of backlog, the "Wii Channel" has been dead for about 2 years now.
Explanation or defense?
Games come sparsely for the VC. SEGA just released 3 games today.
No, there isn't a secret safe full of a 1000 VC games waiting to be released.
At least Wii had a fantastic first 2-3 years of VC service.
3DS didn't even last a year before it went to complete and utter crap. Nintendo SERIOUSLY needs to rethink their 'one 3DS download a week, no exceptions' rule, because 3DSWare will ALWAYS get priority, and it's starting to pile up, and usually the new game is only decent. Nintendo NEEDS to rethink their DD strategy, as far as VC goes. It's disgusting.
