EA Sports' Madden man says Wii U is 'absolutely' next-gen

A portion of a Game Informer interview with Cam Weber, EA Sports' new general manager of football...

GI: There is some fear that Nintendo's Wii U platform will be stuck between the current generation and the next one. Is the console really a next-gen platform?

CW: Absolutely. It's a [new] platform with a new controller input, so we'll do everything we can to deliver an experience that will take advantage of the hardware for that consumer.

As you can tell, Weber stopped short of confirming Madden NFL 13 for Wii U. Full interview here

"It's a [new] platform with a new controller input"

He makes no comment on the graphical capabilities, which is the ONLY thing in question when it comes to "next-gen" expectations.

So PS4 and 720 are not as poweful as PS3 and 360? ok ! :lol:

Next gen it will be. It could be weaker than a 360 and still would be next gen because of being new hardware (I dont actualy think that will be the case btw...). Well, unless this guy uses the "core" definition of next-gen, where only graphical and computational advancements count towards being next gen (which he doesn't seem to be using here since there is no mention of power at all, just "new console with new controller"). Anyway Im interested in seeing if these devs will keep their words once the PS4 and 720 launch.

Man am so sick(in a good way) of all this speculation. All i want to see is proof that the WiiU graphically can surpass PS360 by a healthy margin and i'll be happy. Im psyched about the systems other robust functions, but i need it to look better so we can shut up the naysayers and enemies of Nintendo for a little while.

Wut?

@Frankula

The GI guy did not ask him about the Wii U's power so the EA guy did not say anything about the power.

If everything seen online is true, engines built from the ground on wiiu hardware, or very well optimised, will be amazing looking. But it depends on developers, like always.

Yeah i understand what you are saying, but i want to see a third party game (also announced for the HD twins) that graphically blows them away. I want to see naysayers eating crow damnit!

I really do hope to see EA make something interesting out of a Wii U Madden game. But I have my doubts considering how disappointed I was over the last few years of the series (especially on Nintendo platforms).

Nintendo have clearly developed a good relationship with EA, it's a shame they're having to resort to befriending such nazis.

That alone doesn't convince me, sorry

It's next gen, get over it already. What I want to know is can I play with two tablets? Can we finally have Madden with personal play calling?

Madden with that Wii U Controller could be fun. I had Madden for my SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis), it was a great game.

Oh, Id love that too but keep in mind that the wiiu will have to build its userbase from zero, and devs will have to consider if the extra effort will be worth the results. Darksiders II will have pc assets so there is that.

Yeah, he basically said "Yes...it's a new....console."

Didn't really answer the question.

Like several people here I'm not deriving any real information out of this. It's just worded too carefully. Going back to "wait and see" mode.

Yea, a Madden done well on Wii U would be epic, I would totally buy it and I have gotten a Madden game in like 6 years

i agree with the guys pointing out that this means NOTHING concerning the hardware power. hes saying "yeah its a new console. the controller is different. were gonna make a game that uses the controller"

That successfully dodges the question in every way.

Of course, it's still possible that EA can't say a word on the power. However, I do believe that it unfortunately inevitably will be stuck in between generations.

@Radiant
That's not really a bad thing.
Power doesn't matter all that much for consoles people. PS1 and PS2 prove that.

@Zug Zug
Those were still within the same range of graphics of the more stronger consoles and had other advantages (better storage, multimedia)

They are obliged to say this because they make games for everything. They'd have good things to say about anything that could potentially make them money. /synical

It's not even a question!! NEXT GEN IS NEXT GEN REGARDLESS OF IT'S POWER OR ANYTHING! GOD DAMN IT!
