Latest Wii U patent image shows slightly different Circle Pads

Looks like the Circle Pads from last year's Wii U controller have gotten a slight revamp. There's a raised element to them, which seems to make them more like traditional sticks. On top of that, I'm sure that leaves enough room for that clickable stick rumor we heard last week. Thanks to Chosenonknuckles for the heads up!

I'm okay with circle pads, nintendo did say that it was going to be like an improved version of the 3ds ones which is okay with me

I get the design purpose for circle pads on the 3DS, trying to make sure the thing can close properly or not have to be too thick. But on a console? It doesn't need to be like that. The friction of the circle pads just doesn't feel very smooth or ideal compared to regular analog sticks.

Regular sticks would look very tacky on a flat controller like what the Wii U is. If it was more round like previous controllers then a stick would be fine, but for what the Wii U tablet it is...pads are much better design wise.

Did they also change the ridge on the back?

I love Circle-Pads over Analog sticks so I'm good with this. Analog sticks make me feel like I'm fighting with it. I also despise the analog sticks on the Wii Classic Controllers. Ugh.

I think I'm okay with Circle Pads, honestly. After trying a Vita a few days ago, and coming to the realization that the 3DS Circle Pad feels way better than those sticks, my reservations have mostly disappeared.

If they're clickable, then we're pretty much set.

If you have ever played a Vita, you will understand why the circle pads exist. It's not so that the system can close, it's to do with the size of the balls inside. To make a decent feeling analog, you need the ball to be about 3 inches in diameter. There's simply not enough space in the system for that. If you have a smaller ball, there is a drastic change in elevation as you move the analog which feels weird during gameplay. For the Wii U to use traditional sticks it would have two massive lumps at the back of the pad that would throw off the ergonomics.

@pastasauce Might've.

I love the circlepads myself. The analog sticks concept should always be refined and experimented with, imo.

Oh. And you're welcome, RMC. :)

Hope it's true, at least they'll feel more like analog sticks.. I hated the circlepad idea.

Although it's just a patent drawing, the whole controller looks different now. A lot of fat looks trimmed... and that huge gap between the sticks and the buttons. 0_0

@pastasauce

Some more detail about the updated back triggers from the patent document page 11:

54L are provided on diagonally-upwardly-facing surfaces of the leg portions 59A and 59B and have diagonally-upwardly-facing button surfaces.

With the provision of leg portions on the back surface of the housing, it is easier for the user to hold the housing, and with the provision of buttons on the leg portions, it is easier to operate the housing while holding the housing (50).

Sounds to me like it was updated.

Circle pads feel natural and great on 3DS, I'm fine with them being on the Wii U controller. That said, I'm curious about the clickable improvement.

I have faith in Nintendo controllers and their methods. They work and they change the industry, so I'm confident.

Give me clickable analog sticks instead of Circle Pads...They don't work 100% well some times.

I don't get all the hate for circle pads. I love them because I feel more in control. I actually hope that the Wii U pads don't get raised up to the point of being analog sticks.

Agreed.

A lesson I know all too well in my graphic design work is that the client is not always right. Gamers/fans are no different [hello Wii-mote and Nunchuk, which undoubtedly were mostly 'hated' from the offset - but were perfectly usable, and comfortable, when we actually sat down and used them for the first time, and beyond].

The Upad should be no different I expect! ^

I wonder if the slightly different Circle Pads feel and function in almost the same way as clickable analog sticks.

I don't really mind circle pads, but for a game like smash bros I'd much prefer analog sticks.

I love the circle pad so I'm all for this. I do like that they're raised though and the clicking feature is needed.

Whatever it is as long as it's still a circle pad it's awesome I don't even use the D-pad on my 3DS anymore

ok so I still do but barely

@The_King_Up_North

The Circle Pads can't work without putting effort to them...With the analog sticks, you can rest your fingers and let gravity and the weight of your finger keep pushing them...This does not work with Circle Pads...Also, the mechanism of the CPs loosens after time...This doesn't happen with analog sticks...

And this is why the CPs suck!

No, they never were very comfortable!! The cross pad and the 1&2 buttons were always out of easy reach!

You probably have either small hands or big hands. Personally, I have no problem pressing the 1 & 2 buttons on the Wii Remote.

@LegendofZelda1996

Medium sized hands, here...

And no matter how big or small your hands are, you always line the 1&2 buttons up with the fat part under the thumb(sorry for that description)...So it requires some effort...
And if you have big hands and you can reach the 1&2 buttons easily, then you would have to place your hand lower on the remote, thus making it difficult to reach the cross pad...
If you have small hands, all of them are difficult to reach...

Fair enough. It does require you to give some effort to reach the 1 & 2 buttons, but personally, I don't really mind in putting some effort to reach the 1 & 2 buttons.

Me neither... Just saying that this remote isn't 100% comfortable..
