3DS sales update - 1 million units ahead of DS total at same point in time

Looks like Nintendo is definitely on the path to straightening out 3DS sales...

Also noted by Frazier: The Nintendo 3DS has outsold the Nintendo DS by about 1 million units in their respective first 14 months in the market" ...Nintendo has said that it sold 4.5 million 3DS systems in the U.S. in its first year of availability.

Now all we need is a big showing at E3 to give people even more reason to pick up the system!

@Delta46 Look at it this way, if 3DS continues to outsell the DS during its lifetime, it will become the best selling videogame system of all time. Is that impressive?

People forget that the DS was basically just treading water until 2006. marios and the DSlite won the day.

full disclosure, I had a ds phat and most of my games I bought after I got my dsi.

The 3DS is the best Handheld to date and it's really affordable! I like it a lot and it still has great potential!

But I need more time to play the games. I already own 11-13 retail 3DS games and have many DL-Games. Mario Tennis Open preordered, Fire Emblem instant buy, Paper Mario instant buy...
It would be nice, if Nintendo could make joint-ventures with so broadcasting, I would like to watch my IP-TV on the 3DS.

Success is success even if this stat means nothing in the long-run.

In all seriousness, I don't think you guys really understand how important this story is. It doesn't matter how the DS did in it's first year; what matters is that the original DS is now THE BEST-SELLING CONSOLE OF ALL TIME. If the 3DS is beating the best-selling console of all time... then it will eventually BE the best-selling console of all time. Duh!

Still doomed though...

3.8 million units in one year was not "best selling game system of all time" numbers. It was "omg this system is going to fail because it only has one game even worth playing" numbers. 3DS is doing okay, but it's not showing the promise of the DS line yet at all. It was still outsold by the DS this past year. A 7 year old platform.

And at 150 million units sold, that's an average of like 20 million DS's sold per year. 3DS has done 4 million in a year so far, and launch years are supposed to be a good thing.

I don't doubt the 3DS will report better sales in its second year, but I don't think it's ever going to hit the same stride as the DS. I'll be surprised if it sells more than 10 million new systems next year. It'll take a new 3DS-only standard Pokemon game to beat that number.

Why had no one properly informed us of how doomed Nintendo was thanks to DS sales?

Looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy 3 on iPhone 6.

First off, NSMB 2 is the going to do the whole 20 million unites sold thing again so anyone saying the numbers aren't that impressive now, wait till August.

But even if it doesn't outsell the DS, so what? Is being the second of 3rd best selling system of all time bad? Sure they might drop off a bit, but if they still go past the 100 million mark that is still really good.

The "the 3DS isn't a new brand so it's easier to sell" argument doesn't really work. People saw the DS as a new Gameboy. It's all Nintendo brand.

edited for terrible grammar

The 3DS is at 16.9 million, it hasn't been outsold by the original DS in any way, in fact the 3DS has been the number one selling platform outselling all other video game consoles and portables. The 360 is said to be the top selling console in April, the 3DS isn't a console, it's a portable. Have you been reading Yahoo or something?
"Nintendo has said that it sold 4.5 million 3DS systems in the U.S. in its first year of availability." That's in the US, the 20,000,000 a year number you referenced would be worldwide, not just the US.

But....but....It was supposed to fail! It....why?

In all seriousness though, when the redesign comes out, all the people who were waiting for the revamp will jump onto the 3DS bandwagon.

@Mit
Uhh, that's not how math works sweety.
The 3.8 mil number is US only. 3DS sold 16 mil in its first year. Close to that 20 mil number you keep referencing.
