Pachter - Casual gamers will 'never buy consoles again'

Coming from a Gamasutra feature with Michael Pachter...

As Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said to me in a recent email, “casual gamers are never buying consoles again.” If true, that would signal a sea change in the balance of power in the video game industry. No longer would companies like Microsoft and Sony and Nintendo hold the reins of power.

Pachter never ceases to amaze me with his comments. He's not afraid to go out there and make a very bold statement, no matter how silly it sounds.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess he made this comment because of phones and tablet's penetration into the game market.

"While he and I have had our disagreements, I think I can agree with Pachter that the casual gamers are gone for good -- at least from the traditional business model. The industry giants are still largely focused on packaged game software for dedicated game hardware, and that simply does not make sense in the face of ubiquitous mobile devices and web-based free-to-play entertainment.""

1) This is pure BS

2) Lets pretend its true, it would be the end of the game industry

He does realize people got the Wii to play games with other people right?

He's right.
Smartphones and tablets are taking over.
NPD and UK sales charts are showing us that.

I adore Pach. Much like I adored Cobra Commander. Sure he's a buffoon that had ideas that never panned out, and that was good because his plans were bad, but what was important was that he tried.

Keep reaching for the stars, Pach. Someday that weather dominator might pan out for you.

But "never?" lol

Everybody has an aunt or two that bought a Kinect and that came out long after smartphones. He's like a kid that says things like "I am literally dying right now" or "I am going to run away from home"

Actually, this is pretty common among stock analysts. A right bold prediction can bring them a lot of prestige and thus more clients and bonuses. A wrong bold prediction is usually forgotten after a while. As such, it is not uncommon to hear statements such as these.

A rich manchild regularly reminds people through song to "Never Say Never".

to a certain extent he is right. The casual gamer that has stopped playing the wii, very rarely plays kinect and occasionally plays on his iPhone to kill time on the bus (basically not even a gamer at all), will probably never buy a console ever again.

Is this saying that the big three are just going to lose to Apple sales wise, or that the big three will be forced to drop out without the casuals? If it's the former, Apple is already making bucket loads. If it's the later, bs. The big three made plenty of money before Nintendo started the trend of attracting the casual market and they'll survive just fine going back to just focusing on the dedicated gamer market.

If only. Then we would not have to deal with otherwise good developers like Nintendo wasting resources trying to appeal to them.

"casual gamers" never bought consoles to start with they played games on the fricking PC they had to check email so they still wont buy any and never have,.

and they they would buy a real freaking PC game on accident and find out there PC can not run it with the crap GPU and CPU they got from there walmart special PCs then take it back to the store play online poker.

The same thing happens with console noobs that play crap of duty and halo and 99% of nintendo noobs that think that goldeneye crap is a real first person shooter and gods gift to man when they try to run play games on there PCs then they stare blank into space and wonder why there intel intergrated graphics GPU is not running there game.

Hell wait a minute no console has had a real first person shooter ever they have a game that is trying to be a PC game and doing it like crap I take that halo coment back its not real a first person shooter either. its the same behavior I have been seeing since fricking 1980s/.

Oh and grandmas might have bought a wii after the wii fad then they threw it in the closet or gave it away to some little kid. and maybe some soocer moms was tricked by micrsoft and Oprah to buy a kinect xbox bundle so they could dance cheesy in there rooms with star wars characters and bad teen pop stars.

So patcher is 100% right on the money they will never buy consoles again they have PCs to play online poker and crap face book games and cheep cell phones and andy other device that plays crap cheep electonic games even LCD key chains to play tetris . it has never changed and been that way since the dawn of time;. Hell the wii and kinect is the new atari my grandma even had an atari back in the 80s a kept it into the 90s and she did not even have a VCR.

But as a casual gamer probably doesn't scourge the net for video game news, their state of mind is probably going to be the same as when they bought their last console. Meaning they'll buy another in time.

Even if the phones are taking over I can see Casual gamers buying consoles I mean seriously how on earth do video games consoles sell lot's and lot's if none of them are casual gamers. And on future consoles there is gonna be a casual game or something to attract this people.

This guy should really shut up

I'm sure they will. When the economy gets better or when the consoles continue to give unique experiences, they'll be back.

Hahhahaaha, so all those millions of people who bought Wii and also PS3/XB360 with Move and Kinect, will not buy Wii U or whatever MS and Sony has? Oh... Um, yeah they will. Is he high again?
