Remember when our first round of Wii U gamer card rumors popped up? The 'gamer card' is a supposed device that would connect with your Wii U, but you could also carry it around with you. We haven't heard anything to deny those rumors yet, which is probably why a second round has popped up. With that said, I believe this to be one of the sketchiest rumors concerning the Wii U. You know, outside of that whole Acid Ghost situation...
- gamer card will be able to also StreetPass with 3DS' that have connected to the Nintendo Network
- single gamer card will be available with the Wii U
- you can purchase more gamer cards at retailers for $5 or (possibly) $10
- may see release of a family pack containing multiple gamer cards
- gamer card hardware features a small, low-res GBA like LCD screen
Thanks to Dim for the heads up!

@Barto Probably keychain sized
@ocre
The price difference is too big. Without knowing how the nin accounts will work its difficult to say if it is doable (if its not already in their plans and this is just a cheap alternative if true).
i don't know... that's kind of dumb... I think i like this ide better...
http://nintendoconnect.com/2012/05/19/i ... the-wii-u/
It's a pretty interesting idea, but I can see that idea being scrapped off quickly.
So kind of like the Pokewalker? (Another Cheap Affordable portable device that connects with the DS + LED Screen/buttons)
they better also just have a software on the 3ds that does the same thing. I already carry around some plastic, I'm quickly approaching the limit of shovel I'm willing to carry around with me.
YES! YES! MORE SCREENS!!!!
I like this idea though, it has a lot of potential.
i don't think streetpass could be used with such a tiny device , wifi is known to consume a bit of battery .
So it would be something to make purchase , as always i don't see the great appeal . Well at least it would be just practical and not nickel and diming dlc , toy dlc , toy preorders or the always stupid paying 300 dollars over five years for the ability to play online (free everywhere else ) .
I like the idea, but I'm skeptical of it ever happening.
and only $5-$10 ?
seems too good to be true
You do not have to have a screen on it and it can be a real card like a credit card and use no power.
You can write to RFID chips using the tablet and they are cheep to make that is why they have safty buttons so you do not read or write to the card on accident.
A deluxe model with the screen could also be sold like a pokewalker and they will all share info by RFID and IR and game save infomation. you only need a reading device to read it and the 3ds version will use spotpass by the system.
nintendo would make the the lcd device is the read and write device the RFID cards are cheep.
This is another one of nintendos R and D projects and cheep to do.
Its simple rather than logging into somebody else console it will detect you by the RFID in your pocket .
This smells fake to me. But whatever if it is real then... I guess it might be cool? I don't really understand it's purpose/what is supposed to do.
the range of rfid is too small to be used in a street pass situation, and just passing cards with rfid chips in them won't do anything, they need the radio waves from the rfid reader to power themselves and transmit a very, very weak signal back to the reader. so just two rfid tags won't do jack.
So... like... it's an actual CARD??? Weird but... interesting.
To do streetpass without a 3DS and transfer the info to the wiiu
$5/$10 for an LCD enabled card, likely with flash rom 256k to 1MB for streetpass data? plus a basic CPU and wireless chip for streepass? I'm not sure about component costs but that seems like it's really pushing it.
I guess it's not backlit and is some HQ version of the pokewalker or it's B&W screen. Either way, I hope it is li-ion or it will be a pain replacing batteries after a while and will reduce uptake from younger kids who will not have the money to want to spend $5-7 for one of those button batteries they like to put into these devices.
I'm still a bit confused how they are going to make this work for $5 or $10
What I think is more likely is they cost $5-$10 to manufacture and may retail for $19.99
Hmm... ok then... might be interesting...
I think the idea is to augment what the 3DS can do. I assume the 3DS can also stand in for the Wii U with an app download that lets you sync with it.
But the pricing is raising an eyebrow for me. Though we have our first leak of Nintendo doing a portable streetpass device for the Wii U some weeks ago from another source. So I think at worst it's people riffing off that rumour with their own and both rumours end up being false, or we're getting more details on what was initially leaked.
From what I understand, this feature is like how StreetPass works in Mario Kart 7 but instead it's a system wide feature. Basically, when you StreetPass people with these cards, it logs in their profile data that when NFC to the Wii U it will check the online database for them and add them to your friends list. Then you can see if they are online and play games against them.
Basically, when you walk around, you are meeting new rivals and gamers you can play online all without ever talking to them to exchange your "gamertag".
And yes, from what I also understand (as it kind of says in the article) there will be a System Update to the 3DS that will allow you to synch your 3DS to your Wii U so your 3DS can work like the Gamer Card. Theoretically, that means when you exchange "gamertags" you also exchange your 3DS Friend Code, a way to not ever use codes ever again...
@Sidepocket Hell yeah, that'd be awesome!
Any Wii U rumour that has a price screams fake to me.
I can do without this personally, StreetPass has been meaningless to me and I can do without another card being on me what with all the fricking ID, various store point cards etc crowding my wallet and if it a portable device with a mini screen...well already got a handheld and a phone also crowding my pockets.
The sensible thing to do would be to have a mobile app instead that does the same thing. Yeah Nintendo doesn't want to make apps for other platforms but it would be the ideal thing to do.
It'd be cool if it could fit in a wallet like a credit card would. You wouldn't have to think about taking it with you, you can just forget about it. Hopefully you don't have to charge it very often.
Price seems a bit low if they are real lol
Question, if StreetPass has not worked for you why do you request a mobile app? It would only apply to Wii U and 3DS owners so if your area lacks them then having a mobile phone version would do squat. Plus they can't because:
1) Most phones do not have the same wireless protocols and range required to do a StreetPass.
2) Those who do are expensive.
3) Also those who do drain the battery life a lot, expect your phone to be only on for 10 minutes before it dies.
1 and 2 are just wrong. 3 is a little more true but still off base. There is nothing special about the radios in a 3ds. just regular 'ol unlicensed 2.4ghz.
Cool I hope Wii U have StreetPass on it
