RUMOR - Smash Bros. rumor most likely fake

UPDATE - Looks like the story is a fake, with the details here and the image below key to revealing the faker.

Here's a real juicy rumor for you guys and gals. Supposedly Sakurai responded to a fan that suggested Geno from Super Mario RPG, Isaac from Golden Sun and Mega Man to appear in the next Smash Bros.

Sakurai is saying 2 out of 3. He doesn't confirm which ones, but at least we know that two of the characters above will be included! That is, if the rumor is true! Thanks to all those that sent this in!

@funkamatic
What? It would require years to have the basic gameplay alone working flawlessly. There is no chance it would be ready at launch with less characters since the game just started development this year. Besides, less content? Please no.

Fake or not, I hope these characters make it in.

@Iridium077

Actually, Geno was also in a mini-game in Little Fungitown in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. ;)

I agree a lot with you, as much as I cannot wait to get my hands on the next game I want them to take as much time as they can to make a masterpiece, also Nintendo have stated a lot recently that they want to make games that can't be experienced on a smart phone/ pad device so I would imagine these new games will have a lot of content and very special in its own right. I remember the days of waiting 5 years for a new Mario game, a long wait but something was always amazing and different from the last.

At least Geno and Megaman will be in the next game that's for sure.

How is that for sure? Is this not non-info or a rumor? Or did I miss something?

I find it rather sad that I wanted to be excited but then read everyones comments saying it was fake. X'D

It was more wishful thinking than anything, but given how the series sees more new characters with every new entry and seeing as it appears non-Nintendo characters such as Snake and Sonic were introduced in Brawl, I think it's something they will keep on doing for future Smash games... So Geno and Megaman seem more likelly to me since fans keep asking for them (myself included).

If that's the case, I hope they leave Snake out this time. He played like crap and he just doesn't fit the universe. Mega Man the CLASSIC Mega Man, I'm fine with, because he is deeply tied to Nintendo's past. I still would rather they included Simon Belmont, who was included in no less than 4 different Nintendo based CV games. I think he would work better, have cooler moves, and the background/soundtrack they could have for his stage could be amazing.

Apart from it being photoshopped or whatever, it's also most probably fake judging from the language.

This Chris person machine translated his message from English to Japanese, but he said he did that originally anyway, so that's all OK. It's a long message, so it's very easy to tell that it's machine translated (because of how incorrect it is in places).

But then there's Sakurai's response, which isn't incorrect Japanese or anything, so it doesn't stand out as a machine translation right away, but it does stand out a bit as an odd response. Doesn't really seem like it'd be a response from Sakurai comparing it to his other posts.

Now, if we google translate "2 out of 3" into Japanese, we get that exact same reply that Sakurai said, most probably meaning that indeed, Chris also machine translated Sakurai's response, which would explain why it doesn't feel like it's coming from Sakurai and that Chris did indeed fabricate the whole thing.

All of the hype behind Geno is the fact that a ton of people that have the money to purchase a 3DS and a Wii U played Super Mario RPG as a kid back when the Famicom/SNES was making its rounds. I remember it pretty vividly as a kid. Geno (and Mallow) were both pretty cool characters by definition, and that nostalgia, like many games, characters and settings, carries on even today, decades after release.

I mean, look at games like Star Tropics. People want Mike Jones in and Star Tropics was, in comparison to a game like Super Mario RPG, not nearly as memorable. A lot of franchises and characters run purely on nostalgia power. It's why people still purchase Mario, Sonic and Metal Gear games. Everyone nostalgic for the characters and settings, everyone hoping that the next game won't disappoint.

Anyway, having said that, I honestly want Geno in for the very reasons I've stated above: nostalgia. When I play fighting games, I tend to play and main characters that I like, and Geno would be right there with Ness, Lucas and Ganondorf. I think there might be some validity to this claim, because wasn't there a news story floating around some time ago that Squenix had let Nintendo borrow 'older' characters for a project? That either means another crappy Fortune Street/Itadaki Street game, or..

Geno and Mallow for Smash 4. Day One Purchase. :3

I don't believe this.

However, I do think that Isaac better be playable in SSB4.

Well, if you want to get technical.........

It all depends on who you ask. Star Tropics "not being nearly as memorable" is entirely a matter of opinion. To you, who "grew up" playing Mario RPG, Geno is super memorable. To someone like me, who "grew up" playing Star Tropics 1 & 2, those games are absolutely more memorable, and I would imagine others my age who "grew up" with the NES, not so much the SNES, would agree. Mind you, I played (and quite liked) Super Mario RPG. I even liked the character of Gino. I merely stated that I don't see why some people are SO obsessed with the character, when to me, he wasn't even the coolest character in the game (personally, I was more stoked to be able to actually play Bowser).

Beyond that, wouldn't Nintendo own the rights to Gino and Mallow, the same as they own the rights to Diddy, and Funky, and Cranky Kong, etc.? The only reason they don't own characters like Banjo and Conquer and Joanna Dark, is because Rare published those titles themselves. Nintendo published Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario RPG themselves, meaning any new characters created by Rare or Square in those games, still belong to Nintendo. Meaning they could use Gino and Mallow any time they want, I'd think.

I would love Mike Jones to be in Smash Bros., and I think he belongs there. I don't think that has as much to do with my "nostalgia", as it does with the fact that the Star Tropics games were truly excellent, with a great story and classic (but hard) gameplay. ST is a franchise they really need to bring back (ala Kid Icarus, which also only received two entries and was then "forgotten"). I grew up genuinely loving those games, and I think Mike, with his Yoyo/Morningstar weapon could have some really unique/cool moves. On a similar note, I think they really messed up not making Little Mac a playable character in Brawl. He's from a fighting game already, for christ's sake, and his move set would have been perfect.

As for nostalgia being behind people buying Mario, Sonic and Metal Gear...while I can certainly see your point with Sonic and Metal Gear (one of which hasn't been good since it's 2D days and the other of which I was just never into in the first place), I really cannot say the same is true at all for Mario. The ONLY Mario titles I personally have been let down by in the entire series, were Sunshine and Galaxy 2. Sunshine because the setting was repetitive and uninspiring to me, and I just really didn't need to play Mario with a water pack (consequently, that theme and setting would have worked a lot better for a non-Mario game). And Galaxy 2, because it was (to me) flat out unnecessary, and more or less the "Lost Levels" of Mario Galaxy, just a game with harder, unused level ideas. And Yoshi, who didn't really work the way he was supposed to in 3D.

But otherwise, Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, even Super Paper Mario? I was thrilled with those games, which were really high quality, as most of the Mario adventure games tend to continue to be.

I see your points, and they were fairly valid ones. But I just thought I'd throw in my 15 cents. :mrgreen:

I played the crap out of Super Mario RPG as a kid, and I STILL don't get the Geno hype. He's a wooden doll that comes to life via a child's wish. He kinda just came out of nowhere, really. It's hard to fangasm over something that has barely any screentime or backstory, in my opinion.

Besides, Mario, Peach, and Bowser should always be your main team in that game no matter what. You'll tear the game a new one that way.
[Of course, it's always a good idea to keep everyone at the same level.]

Actually, I believe it's the polar opposite in this case. Geno and Mallow were made up by Square Enix themselves, if memory serves me correctly. Therefore, they are [partially] owned by Square Enix, not Nintendo. Heck, Nintendo had to give credit to Square Enix just to use the Geno cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Interesting. Especially considering Rare also made characters like Diddy and the rest of the Kong bunch themselves too. Nintendo absolutely owns the entire cast of Rare-created Donkey Kong titles. But I guess they had to make concessions to Square just to get SMRPG made? *shrugs*

Can't tell ya on that one, I have no idea either. But that's what it seems to be.

So going by that logic, Geno would be considered either a 2nd party character or a full-on 3rd party entry I think. On the downside to this, that'd be yet another Mario character entry into the roster. We have the main 4 already, we don't need any more. Same with the Zelda and Pokemon series.
I say to keep the franchise entries to a max of 4 fighters, personally. Makes the roster seem more balanced out with even representation that way.

On the contrary, I think there should be more Mario characters.

But not Geno. Geno is one of the most irrelevant Mario characters they could possibly pick, and the trouble they'd have to go through to get the licensing to add him? Just isn't worth it no matter which way you cut it.

I'm not saying I dislike Geno, but there was way too much hype for Geno in Brawl. He never had even the slightest bit of a chance.

Anyway, more Mario characters because the roster going to expand quite a bit further, right? It's true that Zelda has reached its max point of necessary characters. But really only because of the nature of the series and how there aren't any other characters that aren't one-shots or... well, Tingle. We won't go into that.

As much as I hate it, Bowser Jr. deserves a spot.

I'd say that, or the Mario characters, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Birdo, and Daisy are the ones with the biggest chance.

And I'd love LOVE to see Wart in!

Geno...please explain this to me

Do you people also want to see byrne?
I dont care if you think a character is cool, it doesnt mean hes fit to be in a fighter. Its one thing if he were an assist, but people have been whining over geno being a fighter since melee.
How about instead of wanting them to waste time and resources on a character a splinter of the fanbase actually cares about, you beg the devs to make existing characters more unique?

Yeah, I still don't get why people insist on Geno, I would better argue for characters like Lip, Little Mac, Prince Fluff (being serious) and Ghirahim.

@HammerGalladeBro
Huh...Smash bros doesnt have a creep character yet, does it?
Doubt ghirahim whould work though, hed just be a reskin of marth or some crap like that.
I dont see what you would get out of little mac, but at least hed force the devs to create a unique character.

Seperate ganondorf further from falcon, and allow us to pick sheik as her own fighter, those seem more important than adding more freaking characters.
