Star Fox/Metroid mash-up debunked?

Coming from the Paul Gale Network, where the rumor originally started:

It was in these past few days that I was able to find out if there’s any truth to Star Fox – Metroid: Fusion Saga.

The good news is that going into E3, I have an answer: No. This game is not what Retro Studios is currently working on and it will not make an appearance at E3 next week.

According to my source, the game was indeed at one time a proposal. Furthermore, the idea of Star Fox and Metroid crossing paths in a more unified Nintendo universe represented but one of several potential team-up projects that Nintendo has been considering. Games like Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition and Project X Zone (Capcom/Namco Bandai/Sega game in development by Monolith Soft) were also thought up during this period of establishing more Nintendo character familiarity, helping build up less popular franchises, and showing the core demographic that going into the 8th generation of gaming with Wii U and 3DS, Big N is a forward thinking company.

Big thanks to reader Jason for the heads up!

Link So now that the rumor is put to an end, how do you all feel about it? Where you excited about this game or unsure?

Well im glad its now something we wont go into e3 expecting at least. I dont really want retro to have to return to metroid at this point, let them continue with DK or something completely different for once.

I just want a Star Fox game. No mixture needed.

A world of anthropomorphic animals in space fighting a giant head mad scientist and a world of the future of our own world under a Galactic Federation dealing with Space Pirates and bio-weapons do not belong together.

Oh boo.

But not surprised.

Oh good. Time for a banning. Seriously, I'm sick of journalists posting whatever they feel like because 'I think it's cool, even though there's a 99% chance it's bologna.' Absolutely 0 integrity or responsibility here.

I guess my source was wrong, damn... :/

The rumour sounded really odd to me without starfox and friends being stretched to human proportions to better fit the loneliness and darkness metroid portrays (Otherwise bobble headed samus ftw?). I'm glad this rumour was hopefully debunked and I will begin holding my breath for proper metroid and star fox games.

Yay. I am not at all surprised because the idea was complete crap. I knew from the start it was fake. Now people should learn not to believe in this garbage. :/

There is no reason for Nintendo to try to build-up franchises. Both StarFox and Metroid can be multimillion sellers if they would just put-out quality games.

Metroid Prime got lots of interest because it was the first time Metroid had been made in a decade and people were excited to see how it would be in 3D. It was also a very solid and fun title. It wasn't the metroid gameplay of quick manuevering and flip-jumps and all that but it still took many aspects of the game and brought them to 3D. It was still missing quite a lot. Prime II went gimmick. Prime III went gimmick. Hence, they suffered in sales. They should have advanced the Prime series by incorporating more of the feeling of Metroid rather than incorporating light/dark and phazon nonsense.

Zero Mission didn't sell because it was a remake and while it had some strengths and I personally enjoyed it, it was too easy and not Metroid enough.

Fusion: I also enjoyed for the most part but it was not Metroid. Sakamoto admitted he wanted to make the game easier and made it very linear to accomplish that. In the same interview he said the fun of Metroid is getting lost but he took that out of the game to make it easier. But if the fun part of the game is removed, why would people play it? He thought that Zero Mission was an attempt at bringing back the traditional Metroid... again it was a simplified remake of the original and told you where to go - the fun part of getting lost was removed from that game as well.

Other M: I appreciate some of the things they were trying to accomplish with the blending of 3D and 2D - it wasn't an easy task. But Metroid should not have any story except that which is told through the gameplay and doesn't mesh with cutscenes. It wasn't just how Samus was portrayed - I hear that all the time. The game wouldn't have been any better had samus been portrayed as some bad-ass and the cutscenes and intro tutorial and linearity were left in-tact. It was these things and a total lack of video-game aesthetic present in the 80s and early 90s - i.e. memorable and kick-ass video game music, pure balls-to the wall gameplay. I can't remember a single song from this game (its important!)

Intro tutorials are a disgrace to video games and ruin everything they touch.

I don't even know what is going on with StarFox, the last one I played was 64. This can sell too, it just needs the proper vision. I don't know if the characters and general presentation need to be refined or just some tweaks to the gameplay or both.

Nintendo either does not understand what made its titles popular or they do and are unwilling to make them that way because they feel they have to do something "different".

Exactly what I said when I read the title of this story. lol

I'm not against mash ups, in fact they can be fun and cool. I think many of us have thought about how great combining different game universes can be since Captain N but with more fleshed out universes, it seems to me the most likely chance a game works is for a shallower blending of the worlds. Gameplaywise it could work and be very interesting but when you start getting into where it would take place and who would be included and how much of the canon would you try to draw upon, you start running the risk of alienating both audiences.

I do think rather than making a new universe for the game to exist, if it was like that mock up gif someone created about the game, where it was 2D, possibly really light on the story besides to set up why Samus and Fox are working together, and have it be just about gameplay, you can get away with a lot without running the risk of disappointing fans.

Nintendo is good but it's much better that this isn't true. It makes anticipating what Retro is working on even better.

While this is probably for the best, I still really wanted to see this mash up. :(

Even my body would be ready for a last years shooting demo kind of multiplayer mash up, with perhaps a co-op campaign added.

still a big possibility for a new Metroid Prime (1st person Metroid), I'd love that, I think

I want Retro to make a new one! That's more like Prime 2, which is a very long game.

Ah, I miss Metroid~<3 Other M was good, but not nearly good enough..

Very nice it's not true, starfox and metroid are so different in style/mood/gameplay that it would have been a guaranteed fail.

This game would have turned out like Starfox Adventures except you know, done right. The proposal suggested both Nintendo and Retro Studios would be working on it, instead of Rare alone.

That game looked like it was going to have an interesting story before they had to cut out some levels and repurposed others after Crystal was no longer a playable character. I don't know how it turned out after Miyamoto insisted it become Star Fox and it was moved to the Cube cause I never played it, though.

It was a Zelda clone with light Star Fox elements thrown in, emphasis on light. The Star Fox levels had no variety in them whatsoever. The graphics were high quality though. You could actually see the individual hairs on Fox McCloud's fur. The game itself mainly consisted of fetch quests with generic scripted action sequences thrown in. If Nintendo handled the on rail Star Fox portions and Rare the puzzle/exploration areas, it would have turned out great. Instead the burden was placed solely on Rare.

Nintendo wanted them to use an established character so their games would sell well to prevent the mistake that happened before. Goldeneye 007 sold 8 million copies. Perfect Dark only sold 2.5 million. Rare wanted to make original games. Then people at Rare started leaving in droves. Nintendo along with the founders sold their shares of Rare to Microsoft. ...Yeah. At least they got all their intellectual properties sorted out of the way before they did. Unlike what happened with Fire Emblem.

The creator of Fire Emblem left Intelligent Systems to make a Fire Emblem clone and then Nintendo sued him. -_-
