Go figure.

But now I love Xenoblade, so I'm stoked for this and if we ever get Pandora's Tower (doubt it).

I'm in the same boat. Too bad I waited this long to get it and missed out on the pre-order bonus.

This makes me a happy camper! I've had the game preordered from the moment I could!

Awesome, I've been waiting for the announcement of the limited edition version ever since XSEED teased it. Already have mine preordered and this will be the perfect game to keep me occupied over the summer while waiting for Wii U.

'Tis a shame the US version doesn't have the same packaging as the EU or JP versions. Where's the soundtrack CD?
Oh well, I'll take what I can get.

I pray that July 10 date is real. Please, let it be real.

And yeah, that trailer was fantastic. I really want this game! :D

I think they should have saved this for E3 and used it to open their press conference.

I still feel bad for being unable to really put my thumbs up for this one.

For all the talk Sakaguchi did about HD and SD, the final product felt like an unfinished/poorly optimized mess that could barely hold up a framerate and was pretty much the first video game in my life where I felt that its laggy performance hampered the overall experience.
Doesn't help that its story is one of the most generic and predictable stories a video game ever told (under all that mold and/or playing-safe I still don't get how some media called Last Story "refreshing" for the genre in any way) - aside from some elements that can admittedly make you go either "Well, that was...'new'." or "Well, that was...stupid.".
Battle system and bare-bones character customization options didn't really click with me either, since whatever depth/strategy the game tries to build around it unfortunately rarely felt "fun" to me. The little strategic options fights offer can feel awfully optional at times and I would bet that a large number of players might even completely forget about them for a majority of the game.

I'd agree on the overall pretty likeable cast of characters, however shallow they may be or how well hidden/easily missable the little character development/background for some of them is. Feels like a shame though the cast is thrown into a game that never really shaked the feeling for me that it could benefit from both stronger scenario and stronger hardware (or optimized programming).

Gonna be interesting to see the general US reception of the game. While I felt that LS is really rough around most of its edges, I'd love to see Mistwalker improving on the formula.

@Red

hmm...maybe the fact that I don't know what a generic JRPG story is (since this is the first JRPG I've ever finished) the reason why I enjoyed it so much.

just out of interest did you finish the game?

Guys please give it a chance, it's really really good, the story is great, the combat system is amazing, the characters are likeable (except for syrenne who does my head in) and the ending is one of the best endings I've ever seen in a game and the there was really good unexpected twist (which I won't spoil obviously).

That was an amazing trailer, best trailer for this game, and I love the music, wish I knew what the song was called.

Easily the best game that I have played this year so far.

You know when a game is amazing when people who dislike the genre it's in still like it. I'm so excited for this game!

Only JRPGs I've played have been Super Mario RPG, the MOTHER/Earthbound games and Xenoblade so far. So they're not "generic" to me yet either. 8)

Sweet I was worried we weren't going to get anything special for this awesome game and lo and behold we do and close to release too. I have to finish paying it off soon.

I really wanted that awesome Europe special edition. Steelbook with art book and soundtrack? That would've been great.

But I won't complain, this looks very nice as well.

Personally I'll miss the soundtracks the most. I've listened to Xenoblade's and The Last Story's soundtracks on youtube, they're really good.

Good stuff. I'm ready to play after finishing Xenoblade. Been waiting since the day the first trailer was revealed and I'm happy that it's almost here. This will probably be the last Wii game that I'll play on the system before moving on. Last Story. Last Wii game for me. Quite fitting.

Unless Nintendo decides to bring over some stuff from Japan...

@motherbra1n

If we want to talk on (J)RPG-terms, then I might actually turn the statement around and argue that the story isn't terribly generic compared to the crimes some story/scenario writers of our times pull and have pulled. It's just my personal input on a more general level, that Last Story works with your basic, cultural "dude from lower social rankings falls in love with a princess" setting, pulls the expected "Oh God, we can never be together, can we?" premiss and...in my opinion doesn't really go anywhere terribly interesting from there. While I'd argue Last Story is rough around a lot of edges, I felt like its very core story/characters/romance unfortunately lacks any of those edges to make it particularly memorable and is/are overshadowed by its -in comparison- livelier secondary cast and antagonists. Which isn't and may not be a bad thing per se, but felt kind of odd for a game that puts one if its possibly least interesting characters on the box and seemed to advertise her as a strong and central character. [/opinions]

>just out of interest did you finish the game?

Twice. Contrary to my seemingly crushing complaints I don't feel Last Story is an unplayable mess not worth looking into. Especially right compared to Xenoblade it streamlines a lot of your general JRPG "BS" mechanics to make it even more accessible for people who don't feel like putting up with all the usual fluff, while keeping the same "homey" feeling that Lazulis City offers as a setting after a while.
Admittedly though, I feel like everything Mistwalker could possibly build up from where they left could end up more interesting than the Last Story itself.

@people missing the "soundtrack"
Honestly, you guys won't be missing much much. The disc only contains 7 tracks and I daresay they aren't exactly the highlights of Last Story's OST. In return you're getting a much more solid artbook, which was incredibly tiny on our side.

Actually nowadays a stereotypical J-RPG story is to twist itself into a needlessly complicated knot in order to make itself seem more deep and interesting than it really is. I like to call this the "Hideo Kojima Effect." In all honesty J-RPGs are better off for going simple and profound.

So if we pre-order it now, is there a good chance we can still get the first print bonuses? Amazon (understandably) hasn't updated their store page yet so I have no idea if my just-made order will make the "deadline".

Is this game the usual jRPG length (WAY too long, 60+ hours)? I think I heard it is shorter than that, and that for me is a HUGE selling point.

I wanna preorder, but I don't have the money as of yet. Soon though! Hope it comes out later on so I can buy it

It is reported to be a lot shorter really. 20 to maybe over 30 hours at best has been said by many reviews and message boards about finishing the game's story that I read.

Really? Great. I want to get into Xenoblade (haven't really started yet) but average 80 hour playtime is a HUGE turn off for me. I could play 5 other games in that time. I like shorter times, but not too short. 20-30 hours is perfect. Thanks! :)

From the reviews I've read, this seems like a great game. Honestly, I don't think comparisons to the amazing (my opinion, obviously) Xenoblade Chronicles are all that fair. They're both JRPGs, yes, but their releases are far enough apart that I feel they shouldn't really be competing anymore. I feel Operation Rainfall has sort of grouped these games together in a way they really shouldn't be. They are unique from each other and should be judged as such.

Now, where can I preorder this?

Both Amazon.com and Gamestop have it up, not sure of other places.

Edit: XSEED confirmed on their twitter that all preordered/launch copies will get the book: "For those asking about current preorders: ALL launch copies will have the art book, so if you preordered before/now/etc, you will get it."

I don't know why certain people have to compare TLS to Xenoblade and act like TLS is Xenoblade's younger, not-as-cool brother. I'm quite positive the game can stand on its own. Personally, I'm finding that Xenoblade just isn't my cup of tea so I'm hoping The Last Story will bring something completely different. After seeing the announcement for the special bonuses, I've put in a pre-order. Thanks a ton for the localization, XSEED. Hopefully an official release date will be announced at E3?

Glad I bought my copy from AMazon when it was first available! This is exactly what I was waiting for.
