Another round of rumored info, coming from a supposed European development house with several Wii U projects in the pipeline...
- achievement system also allows you to gain points
- a certain amount of points nets you access to additional features
“We have a lot of freedom with the Wii U points system, we can add “brackets” for players, e.g. if you amass X points you get promoted into a new bracket with awards such as new MP [multiplayer] skins. It’s basically what we’ve been asking Microsoft to do for years. Players who earn points by completing the game should be awarded. We can do that now.”
- cloud storage will be “a few hundred MB”
- this will be free to all players
- once again, due out 2013
- social networking features like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook in Wii U
- upload screenshots to Facebook accounts, auto-Tweet game progress and record/upload game videos to YouTube
"They’re working on a UI overlay for the OS to add Twitter and FB notifications, but so far we haven’t seen it. They’ve reserved a lot of system memory for stuff like that. There isn’t much documentation about it in the new SKD, but they’ve told us it’ll be available in the future.”
- Nintendo Network on Wii U includes new avatars with a lot more features than the original Miis
- use the Wii U controller’s built-in camera to take pictures of yourself
- use these pics to create digital avatars that resemble high-definition Miis
- Miis can then be imported into games
“There’s an API for the camera to scan faces and turn them into low-res 3D versions for games. But it’s still buggy as hell and it depends a lot on the kind of engine you’re running.”
- porting current gen games to the Wii U isn’t as easy as originally thought
“(Games made on 360 will be) much easier to port to Wii U than PS3 versions. A lot less headache involved because their architecture is similar. Technically, you can just recompile X360 to the Wii U and it’ll pretty much run, but PS3 to Wii U is much much trickier.”
- latest SDK hardware is final, but the software keeps updating
“We’ve spent a lot of time creating our own tools for the X360 this generation, and we’ve already tweaked a lot of the tools to work on the Wii U. But if you code on the Wii U from ground up and have to use middleware, it’s probably gonna be tougher than doing an X360 game from ground up.”

Ooh, I like the Point system. So ready for even more rumors and speculation!
Tomorrow is Nintendo Direct, we'll see what all they show.
I don't care for achievement points but I sure do hope there are achievements. Those always make the game a little more fun for me.
But what I'm REALLY hoping is true would be the improved Miis. The current ones are just to simple. I want ears, clothes, and more hairstyles.
The OS and network might be shown at the conference though
I'm gonna be bold here, but I think whatever the united whole of the Wii U OS and Online is, it's gonna make Live and PSN eat out their hearts out.
There's no reason it shouldn't be.

This sounds like it was added to reconcile the recent rumor that the Wii U is complex to program for with the previous reports that Wii U is easy to port because of how close it is in architecture to the 360.
I don't buy it, simply because who would try to port a PS3 game to the Wii U? Isn't the lead development platform for most multiplatform games the 360 or even the PC? I literally have not heard of a case where it was the PS3, nor do I believe a PS3 exclusive game would try to be ported to the Wii U before being put on the 360.
That "the Wii U is too complex" quote from IGN doesn't even make sense in the context that it's because porting from the PS3 is what makes it an issue, so even with this rumor corroborating that reasoning, why would they try to port from a complex machine (PS3) to the Wii U and then blame the Wii U for not being easier to port. If that was the case, that would mean that if they made it more like the PS3 in architecture, porting from the 360 and PCs would be more difficult and therefore the Wii U would be "too complex" again.
I call BS on all of it but especially on this rumor.
Well all of the rumor doesn't sound like BS but that part does.

Let's hope so.
Points system - Hell yes.
"...and record/upload game videos to YouTube" - Finally someone did this!
that's the one thing I don't like. just rubs me the wrong way.
@lockNES
What if the anon ign devs are just useless to make use of the tablet like they also failed with the wiiremote?
That's how you do achievements: give players an incentive to do them.
See: Kid Icarus Uprising and Shinobi 3D
♫I think I'll go for a walk outside now, the E3 hype train's callin' my name.♬
To me, that seems like the most logical explanation but it seems to me it's more about certain limitations of the Wii U or other platforms that may make things more complex than about the architecture. How can it be more complex when it's been stated about all the things that make it easier to port from current gen systems?
Unless they are talking the Wii U in comparison to the new Sony and Microsoft consoles and from experience between porting between the 3 new consoles, it doesn't add up to me.
So I'm assuming the cloud storage will be used for personal accounts/miis/etc? Which means I'll be able to access my account from any Wii U, correct?
48 hours remain
I hope so, but I have a feeling they are gonna derp it up.
Another rumor said it was for personal account stuff and save files.
Accounts and saves. Read the source, it is more complete than the op.
just make the OS as much like steam as possible. worried about people's accounts getting jacked up? implement email notifications (ITS 2012 PEOPLE HAVE EMAIL ACCESS) when logging into the account from a foreign console... steam emails me a one time code to input and then allows full access to my account from the other PC.
so much of this is possible, and already being done elsewhere. but we knew they'll fuck it up
These rumors don't sound too "out there," so I'll stay cautiously optimistic that maybe they're true. The stuff about achievements and the updated avatars sounds cool, and I like that I might be able to instantly upload gameplay videos from the system itself to my YouTube account.
The stuff about ports from the 360 being easier than ports from the PS3 is not surprising, this whole generation I kept hearing how much easier the 360 is to develop for compared to the PS3. Something to do with the Cell Processor being kinda hard to code for, and then difficulty porting said coding to other consoles (while with the 360 it's easier because you don't have those coding issues).
Agreed. I've never been so hyped to see a console OS, well ever. Nintendo has a good excuse to make the OS as good as it sounds with a controller like that. I wasn't planning to buy the Wii U because of the Wii and 3DS and I'm still sitting on the fence, but Nintendo might just have a buyer with all that hype in the air.
Finally, achievements that actually add something to the game.
My body is Reggie!
and ms has excellent dev tools. it would be so hot if xna game studio express could be hacked to build wiiu executeables. or if nintendo released something like it.
current achievements do add something to games already, they are an excellent way to see how far your friends are in games, and they are a nifty way to say 'hey, I did this cool thing'. and they help devs track some of the things people do, and make the next game better. like if they see 'hrm, 90% of the players do thing X this way, why aren't they taking Y choice?" and then can examine that and see what the deal is.
now, gamerscore, that's just epeen.
Achievements are pointless. But now that they have a point system (no pun intended) were you can unlock things and earn rewards, then I actually have some interest in them. If you just get an achievement just for the heck of it then it seems like a pretty wasteful ordeal. "Achievement Unlocked - Trigger Happy 'You killed ten more guys than last time!!!'" OMG!!! Guinness World Record!!!!!!1! b(*O*)d..... Gimme a break.
Not to mention devs often use these damn things as artificial gameplay padding instead of delivering actual content.
I love the idea of an Achievement system that nets you rewards other than a bigger ePeen.
Porting from the PS3 is more difficult? That's the fault of the stupid ass architecture of the PS3, not the Wii U's.
So true...you can already tell the developers, either singly or as a whole group, who have a bias against Nintendo. Of course porting from PS3 is more difficult than the 360, because of the Cell architecture. But, games still get made for PS3, and they look 99% the same. 360 has tons of games with awful screen tearing, but you never hear about that.
If developers want to be lazy and not port to WiiU, go ahead. Maybe I won't buy your game at all if you want to be that lazy. I have a PS3, but maybe I won't support a developer who wants to hide his bias behind crappy programming. Like Metro...I was all set to pick that game up, but I don't know. Their case might be the exception, because it could be pressure from THQ to get the game out the door since they are in such bad shape. But, that kind of thing isn't going to fly with me.
