REPORT - Nintendo to cut Summer bonuses by 20%

Nintendo Co will cut its employees' summer bonuses by about 20 percent this year as a result of weak business performance, Japanese business daily Nikkei reported. The video game giant reported its first annual operating loss of 37.3 billion yen ($469.65 million) in April on shrinking sales of its Wii gaming console and weak demand for its new 3DS handheld device. The company has reduced executive compensations from last year, the newspaper said.

Just wait until the holiday hits. Nintendo is going to be splitting at the seams with money. Wii U launch and a mega awesome 3DS line up

That's a pretty big loss, but of course it's the strong Yen, early 3DS price cut & the dieing Wii that caused this. If the US dollar recovers, Wii U sells well & the 3DS gets more compelling software things could turn around quickly.

Probably weak compared to what they were expecting.

I mean they did have to do a panic slash of the price to kick start the sales which definitely something they weren't planning on having to do.

@Jikkle Yeah, but if Nintendo was expecting more than all other consoles combined in japan then they are asking for way to much. Also, is this fact or a Nikkei rumor? After Nikkei's 3DS redesign rumor being false i don't think they should be believed

I think weak demand for 3ds is translation for earlier than expected price drop.

Good for nintendo doing this but its way better than laying off a bunch of employees. Now if only all the other business companies would do what nintendo is doing....

I reckon they regret not making the Wii a little bit powerful to at least get down ports now and focusing too much on casuals. The Wii would've been more sustainable over the long term.

Really, that's not so bad. This is their BONUS being cut, not their salary. In bad times most companies remove the bonuses altogether.

Well, you can't have your consoles last best game going back to November, and you can't create a hand held with "widescreen" the size of a half dollar...and let's not even talk abou the chinstrap circle pad nerd audition! You can't sit there and do nothing and wonder why there're losses!

You can only cut n paste Not-So-New Mario so many times.

If they want to fix the 3DS issue, redesign with bigger, better screens and a 2nd circle pad...oh and speakers that you can actually hear. Then offer a buy back of the old crap 3DS' we have now! Problem solved...of course if they had listened to me and the millions of others asking for these things when Reggie first pulled the 3DS from his coat pocket at E3 all them many moons ago...who knows?!

Oh, and games actually worth buying from the Eshop ever hurts either! Bring out SNES games and stop being morons about it!

They do need to fix the folders, we need to see names not just letters! M for Mario games is not the same as M for Metroid games!

Look Nintendo, I'm a genius, you should be paying me millions, but I'll work for free! That's just awesome I am!
