Hmm. That first feature is interesting. (Although what's up with the sudden influx of "let's address sexism in games" articles? Are people just now realizing that this is a thing? It's been a thing for a loooong while.)
Anywho, as I've only played Super Doki Doki Bros 2 I can only speak for Peach. I haven't realized until recently just how important it is to have someone like you in a movie, TV show, video game, whatever, but the feeling of gratitude, of excitement, had always been there. Seeing as how the games back then were super male dominated, it was pretty exciting to finally have a female option. I'm not sure what exactly I thought about it beyond "this is cool!" but that's probably cause i was like, five, and only capable of thinking in terms of "cool!" and " "

I think Tomb Raider's "rape" bit is what really triggered this latest surge of discussion; if not, it certainly helped kick it into overdrive.
Cool features. I owned Castlevania Legends back on GB and agree with the article; cool idea, bad game.
And who knew Peach's pinnacle of gaming would be SMB2. Such a waste..
1up does this thing anymore where they pick a topic and then write stories about it. Before e3 it was "what if" and now its this. Considering how many 'me too' sites are out there I think its a good way to do something different.
Not just the Tomb Raider bit, but the Hitman trailer with the sexy nuns, as well as Anita Sarkeesian trying to do a video series on sexism in video games and getting harrassed by a small group of defensive people. It has sort of been a perfect storm of sexism just recently.
And I don't know... maybe we needed that before things can finally change.

And what exactly needs to be changed? I am tired of everything having to be so pc and everyone trying to make me feel bad for being a straight caucassian male. The knly game I've ever found truely offensive is Other M, but even that works if you accept that Samus is a mentally screwed up nutcase traumatized by an abusive CO and her narritive is her mind reinterpreting the reality of her relationship with Adam. Doubt that was the intention but interesting nonetheless
And Tomb Raider has ALWAYS sucked, I can't believe people are falling for this obvious cry for attention from the developers. Thiz is just their way of getting attention feom the press since their game likely sucks and is outshone in every way by Uncharted.

i know it's so hard being a straight white cisgendered male these days what with like almost everything ever being catered to you these days and all the many many days and months and years and centuries before that
let me tell you personally, as a black woman, in response to you feeling bad for being a straight while male: welcome to the club. but at least you just get to kind of feel bad and not idk feel like a worthless thing, not even a human being, that has to constantly worry if someone's going to hurt them because they're not straight/white/cisgendered/male.
and even then you still don't have much to whine about because again most games these days are still catered to you, so the few games that try to appeal to a broader audience is in no way a threat to you, nor are they out to make you "feel bad". They're trying to make other people feel included. But I guess that's a horrible threat to straight white guys they're the only ones who deserve to feel included so whatevs.

I admit you have a point about the gaming industry. Blame the audience not the developers. Statisticallythey know whats successful and thats what they go with. Its hardly whT I'd call a real problem though, I mean I don't get mad if I have to play a foreign/female/gay/dct protagonist. But not the entertainment industry as a whole, and certainly not in the real world. If I may vo on a tangent, I had an African American boss who was dumb as dirt yet kept being promoted cause we only had two african americans on staff. He eventually lost his job when the company went bankrupt largely due to him. Had he been fired he would have no doubt sued and probably won cause he is a "minoriy". I cant tell you how many contracts we mjss out on cause we aren't a "woman/minority" owned business. Its impossible to get any goverment contract now if your. Ompany/manager is a white male or has too many of them on staff. These are far more serious concerns that impact the world economy and is a sign that pc has gotten out of hand.
So yeah, don't act like the law or government has forgotten you (assuming hou are American). In todays world a black woman like you has every advantage compared to a white male in the same situation. And while I admit I cant think of any popular black video game protagonists atm you are well covered in tv/music/film.

You saix everything is catered to us. I was only tryinv to show thats just not true. Other than gaming and Nascar I cant think of anything that is catered only to white males. Again blame the audience not the developer.
And even then gaming is a stretch. I am sure there are plenty of vames that take the Star Trek approach to gaming. But seeing as how Japan doesnt have a lot of Africans hou can see why they are underrepresented in ghe West.

well let's just start with the fact that we're talking about video games and entertainment and thus the government and affirmative action does not even remotely factor in, and if it did we wouldn't even be arguing because that would mean nintendo was the government i guess and we'd all be out having fun, so
And no, it's still true. The majority of films, television shows, and certainly video games are still catered to straight white males. I fail to see how political correctness is some kind of measured attack against your self-esteem when all it is trying to do is make everyone feel included and treated like a human being. What on earth is so wrong about maybe reconsidering a plot because it makes part of your potential customer base uncomfortable? How on earth is that an attack against you?
I can understand where you're coming from, as I've endured my own share of Caucasian male guilt trips, but the way I see it, once we make sure the other half of the population is happy, these guilt trips can stop. It's sort of like pulling off a band-aid.
Plus, a lot of video game companies are struggling right now, and widening the appeal to women couldn't hurt... Especially in cases where the main thing you need to do is remove the cheesecake, which wasn't really helping the game in the first place.
blah blah spamming this thread like skljdlksajdas but I really wanted to respond to this:

See, this is one of the reasons why I don't understand the bigotry rampant among some gamers. Nevermind that you should be a decent human being to other human beings anyway, but it's like. These guys undoubtedly love video games. But then they go out of their way to alienate other people from playing games, and demand that or at least act like companies shouldn't cater to a broader audience. This makes absolutely no economic sense, especially not in a time when several industries are suffering, gaming in particular. So if these guys like video games, why are they acting as if they're out to kill the industry? Their money's not keeping the industry afloat, so now game companies are doing what they should have been doing all along and making their games more appealing and welcoming to previously ignored demographics.

the irony about the tomb raider crap is that there's no "implied" rape. The guy grabs her neck if you fail and she's choked to death
least that's what I heard. For all I know she gets raped up down left and right and the game gets rated teen and is uncensored
