Sonic Blast is a perfectly competent Sonic game that's worth a dabble for interested parties and hardcore fans. For anyone who only wants to pick up one 8-bit Sonic game, wait until SEGA inevitably drops the superior Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or its prequel on Virtual Console.

...All of the games mentioned there are considered to be awful.
What confuses me is that the reviewer suggests to wait for the GameGear version of Sonic 2 to come out. That game is almost as trashy as Blast. Triple Trouble would be a much better suggestion.

Blast was an awful game, it played like a Chinese pirated clone of a Mega Drive game ported to GG.
The first game on the MS/GG for me was the finest handheld Sonic up until Sonic Pocket Adventure on the Neo Geo Pocket Colour. I really hope Nintendo gets that platform on VC, it had some fantastic fighters and SNK Vs Capcom Card Clash was near perfect. Shame the DS sequel was a train wreck.
Sonic Triple Trouble is 10x better than Sonic 1/2 GG.
