RUMOR - Dragon Quest X to include one-time registration code for play

Looks like used sales of Dragon Quest X might be pretty much impossible. Rumor has it that the game includes a registration code that is a one-time use, but you must use it in order to play the game. The info comes from a Japanese retailer, but is yet to be confirmed by Square-Enix.

Is this game releasing outside of Japan? it looks like a really good game! I would love to see it hit the Wii in North America!

@MrNintendo If it hits in the west next year it'll be for the Wii U.

Who cares if people buy it used? People still have to pay a monthly fee. This pretty nasty stuff, so it's probably true

@SlimeBeherit What do you mean, pretty nasty stuff? This is par for the course for MMO's, console or not. MMO's normally come with a serial code that is used to register the game to your account. It also is the defining factor for begining your free time with the game, be it the first month, or the first 20 hours like Dragon Quest X offers. Console MMO's have been doing this since Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast.

As far as bitching about being charged for a monthly fee, you just need to STFU. Every major MMO has a monthly fee, at least to begin with now-a-days. Besides, I'd rather pay the monthly fee than play a gimped version like most F2P MMO's are.

The other DQ games weren't MMO's though. So, there's that.

@cbbomb Correct, but at the same time, we've known that Dragon Quest X is an MMO for over a year now. This is just a repeat of the exact same complaints we heard proceeding Final Fantasy XI, and frankly, they're just invalid now with DQ as they were with FF. If you don't want to play an MMO, then great! Feel free to skip this entry in the franchise! No one is forcing anyone to play this title. The fact is, it IS an MMO; and therefore, will follow the typical MMO tropes. This is actually more of a non-story than anything, as this is nothing new to MMOs.

Sorry, not trying to come across as a jerk. I just don't understand how some people complain about things that have become established in the genre. It's similar to complaining that Halo Wars didn't play in first person view. It's a completely different type of game, and was always intended to be, regardless of previous entries in the series.

This may help prevent piracy as people won't be able to just download and play the game.

So nothing new in the gaming world, EA likes doing this, so yeah.

i didn't pay a subscription fee for Dark Souls and they have more or less the same online system

Dark Souls is not an MMO [I think]

It isn't, but with a maximum team of four, their isn't anything massive about DQX either. At one point in Dark souls I had a team of three, the experience seems comparable.

Yet another problematic strategy to try and minimize the used games issue without addressing the root cause. If you're having a problem with lost sales because people are trading in their games right after beating them, I have a very simple suggestion for you: make games that people will want to keep. Cut down the tedious filler, drawn-out tutorials, arbitrary puzzles, time-consuming stories and/or cinematic presentation, and make games that are fun to replay again and again.

If a lot of companies decide to go down this road, they'll probably be unhappily surprised. Lots of people will, like me, just be even more discriminating in their purchases, buying fewer games and waiting for those they do buy to go down to even lower prices before buying.

I don't even know how to approach this, as you have a completely wrong mindset about this. In your definition, there's no difference between Dark Souls, Dragon Quest X, Diablo III and one would assume, New Super Mario Bros Wii, as all 4 titles allow you to play with up to 4 players in the same party. While DQX may not allow more than a maximum of 4 characters per group(to keep the Dragon Quest feel and integrity, I might add), the world, towns, and dungeons are packed to the brim with other players. This is WoW(or EQ2, Terra, SWTOR, etc), but for design choices, they've limited your raiding party to 4 players. A 50 man raid team is not a qualifier for a game being an MMO. Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game is a term used for a title that has hundreds, thousands, or millions of players sharing the same world at the same time.

Dark Souls and Dragon Quest X have as much in common as Chrono Trigger and WoW!

Jerome, it looks like you're a little late to the party on this one. Allow me to fill you in, please.

Dragon Quest X is an MMO, just like Final Fantasy XI, and WoW. When you purchase one of these games, you have to enter a serial key that comes with it, linking that copy of the game to your account, and starting your free time that comes with the purchase of the title.

No used game store accepts an MMO as trades, because of this. There is no such thing as a second hand(used) copy of an MMO at a nationwide gaming chain. There is no difference between this game and any other MMO already on the market.

This is not a greedy, underhanded attempt at preventing used game sales; but rather, common business practice for this genre of game.

let's not get ridiculous here :I Wouldn't you say Monster Hunter is similar to Dark Souls? DQX essentially just got MonHunfied.

It's probably because in my head Im assuming you will be able to switch off all the translucent players navigating the over-world. In which case it would be very similar to Dark Souls -online systems wise that is . Anyone else find seeing other players walking around distracting and un-immersive?

Yeah, after I read some of the other posts I realized I was a bit ignorant on the topic. I was just going to delete my message when you posted the next one in the thread, which made my delete option disappear. :?
