Wow, now there's a double-sure way to make you feel old! Atari is turning 40 tomorrow, with Donkey Kong Jr. following up with a 30th anniversary on Saturday. Let's take a look back on both, shall we?
Atari nearly had the rights to distribute the Famicom in the U.S. Let's all be glad that they blew the deal as they and the rest of the video game industry cratered.
The Atari 2600 was my very first home game console (my first actual game experience being Pac-Man and/or Dig Dug at age 3 or so). The 2600, along with the Tandy computer we had, were my first forays into gaming.
The NES was my first "true love", meaning it was the system that, starting with the first time I saw Super Mario Bros., made me REALLY fall in love with, and become obsessed with video games as a kid. But I'll always remember playing Combat and Astroblast, to failing miserably at Space Invaders (too hard for that age). I'm glad Atari the company is still around in some form. It would feel weird if they weren't, because they're such a big part of video game history.
Now I want to know who came first in the Donkey Kong race lol
It sure was nice of Fonzi to help Jr. find his papa.
