Thank you to everyone for the kind words on yesterday's End of Day thought. Again, my apologies for having to keep that information quiet for so long. Now we can all move forward and keep working towards better days. Thanks for the support, my friends. I'll see you in a few, short hours.
I don't think any of us are really all that surprised to see a revision of the 3DS. Nintendo loves to do that sort of thing with their portable hardware. The surprising thing was seeing the announcement come up at a Nintendo Direct, which was just a few days after E3. Regardless of how the Big N announce it, the 3DS XL is heading our way soon.
Unlike the DS Lite to DSi, the 3DS to 3DS XL keeps the same feature set intact. You won't miss out on any new features by now getting the 3DS XL. You'll be skipping out on form-factor changes that supersize just about everything on the system. It may have become less portable, but the visuals are certainly going to look better than ever.
If you're a Nintendo die-hard with plenty of cash to burn, it will probably be pretty hard to ignore the 3DS XL. On the flip-side, many 3DS owners can rest easy knowing that the 3DS XL is just a different way of presenting the same content and features in the current 3DS.
That's why I wanted to ask you guys what your plans are. Are you going to get a 3DS XL? Will you keep your 3DS and add the XL to your collection? Will you trade-in your 3DS for the XL? Did you hold off on a 3DS purchase until something like the 3DS XL came along? Leave a comment and let us know!

Yep! I skipped the original 3DS hoping for something larger, with better buttons (ESPECIALLY those crappy buttons below the touch screen). And here we have it!
I also wasn't a fan of the glossy cover. This is much better.
Just release it in Midnight Purple or Ice Blue (like the Gameboy Pocket) and I will pay whatever you want. haha
It looks to improve on the 3DS in many ways, other than being far more chunky and toy looking imo, I'm nervous to see how this thing looks from the front and side when closed, and it's actually more expensive.
It's still not enough to convince me to buy a 3DS.
After hearing positive reviews from european sites yesterday I am leaning towards getting one....I love my 3DS, but the slightly larger system would be better for my hands I think, and the larger screens will def be nicer! I will wait for a white model to come out since that's the color I want, plus that will give me a chance to get hands on with one in a store I hope. And no I wouldn't trade my old 3DS in.
I beg to differ RMC. They just got through saying we wouldn't see a revision for a while, yet a year later here it is. It's just another nail in the 250 dollar early adoption coffin. I am still not angry with Nintendo due in large part to the ambassador program-- but $200 makes me wonder why they thought 3DS was ever worth that 250 price tag.
It's too soon for me to get one, so I'll be waiting till either a full black unit or the silver one comes through with a bundle because you know there will be one eventually. I guess it's time to stop having so much faith in Nintendo when it comes to these things and act as a consumer.
While my initial reaction to the 3DS XL was pretty much "....ahuh.", I'm more and more considering importing a US XL sometime to be able to fill the possible/expectable void of EU releases. Grudgingly so, because the one thing Nintendo does not deserve for this whole region locking fuckup is even more of my money, but depending on the situation in a few months/years and since Sony is pretty much treating its own Vita like a stillbirth, some further ressources might be necessary on the Nintendo side. Curse you, Etrian Odyssey IV and Nintendo of Europe. We'll have to see how things work out...
I wish it would fit into my Club Nintendo Luigi Hat case. I also wish it had different colors. How about a 100% green case for Dark Moon?
@Nintendude92 the 3ds was priced at 250 because it was well received at e3. Also, tech price goes down rather quickly and it has been a year and a half. The 3ds did cost quite a bit to make if you include all the other things. At 170 they where losing money so I would imagine that 200 was the price it should have been. Also, it'sstill basically the same system. You aren't getting screwed over with Nintendo releasing this model. It's not like apple where every year they release a revision with new features and in a couple years you are left with an outdated brick
Absolutely. Size looks to be great, and having a full inch+ bigger screen is nothing to scoff at. Plus the bottom buttons look to be actual buttons, so another point there, as well as the issue of the screen scratching looking to be resolved AND a better battery life? I can't think of many reasons not to, but the hardest part for me is due to owning the Zelda 3DS, and being a collector. I guess it gets displayed on the shelf after I transfer everything over, but color me excited. Art Academy should be great, and I look forward to using Colors 3D on it (the DSi XL was a world of difference when it came to drawing apps), so I'm absolutely looking forward to this.
The timing on the system is exactly what I figured it would be, 1 year and 6 months after launch, and I also have some friends who do console mods so if I really don't like the red one, I can either custom paint a case or have them replace the top for me and get a green or purple of some sort, so there's personally no reason for me to hold out.
Of course, the MOMENT I buy it they're going to announce the $300 Wario/Mewtwo crossover color system and totally just get me...but I suppose as a fan of the video game industry, that the risk I knowingly take with each purchase!
Counting down the days.
2 things
First, it makes me mad that they didn't include a 2nd circle pad, I mean JUST PUT IT THERE!, if the developers hardly ever use it, well, that's their problem, but at least we'd had the option.
Second, I owned a DS lite and then upgraded to DSi XL, and it was better than expected, the screens were huge, playing with such a big picture was great, and now with the 3DS XL, this is just for me, i will buy it, probably until it comes out in black or silver, I would love to play some of the beautiful and detailed games the 3DS has in the huge screens of the 3DS XL
Yes, and I'm selling my gaming PC to get one, and only a fraction of the games I want.
I definitely want to trade in my 3ds for the XL hopefully they'll have a good deal on that at gamestop. The bigger screen really appeal to me since I am farsighted and have some difficulty with the current screen after awhile.
No, I'm afraid I'll be passing on the XL. My current 3DS does quite well.
... it's international cousin the LL though? Sign me up. JP games? Yes please! JP eShop? Somebody catch me, I feel faint!
I'm upgrading mainly due to the new finish on the system and the bigger easier to reach stylus.
I don't have a 3DS yet, so I am on the fence.
Having just upgraded from a DSL to a DSi Xl last week, I want the 3DS Xl. But I don't like the launch colors.
What is this issue people keep bringing up, 3DS XL messing with StreetPass????
I like the design and colors of the regular 3DS and the price is cheaper.
What should a person, who has held out buying a 3DS do?
Never bothered with the original. Definitely getting the XL. It doesn't have everything I wanted, but my list of games to buy is getting too big!
It would be perfect for me, since I play my 3DS mostly at home, but I'm hesitant to get it and trade-in my old 3DS for it. Many of the games I have provide CPP support and to just upgrade to something that will not offer the option unless I buy a CPP XL ( it'll happen somehow
Ok, I admit it, I am a hypocrite. I said I don't like the design of the 3DS Xl or the launch colors. I still don't.
But, I had a change of heart....I pre-ordered the Blue 3DS Xl!
Yes but not at launch, I can wait for better colors.
Probably not. I already have a 3DS. Even if I don't have a 3DS, I'd still buy the original because I'm carrying too much crap (my glasses case, my cell phone pouch, my retainers case, my iPod Touch and my 3DS case) and then my dad will critsize me for having a big bulge in my pocket.
Which is a shame because I'd love to play Mario Kart 7 on that big-donkey sceen.
And RMC, I hope you find that female dog who hacked your wonderful website and kick his behind.
Absolutely yes. XL YES!
I have a feeling, that the 3D will be even more amazing on the bigger screen.
And the another analogue slider; just buy the add on. If they put another slider there, it wouldn't be comfortable, and the console would be more expensive in vain. Now those who buy the few games, that could use another slider, can buy the rather inexpensive add on, that is quite comfortable. Now the buttons are more important, and the vast majority of the games need the buttons to be where they are.
Still undecided if I want a Red 3DS or a Red/Black or Blue/Black 3DS.
On one hand, I think the two-tone thing looks like crap on the XL. Not a huge fan of the black inside. And I know it doesn't affect my gaming experience, but I love color options and when I want a RED or BLUE handheld, I want to see it in red or blue, not see black and then red or blue when I close it. Consoles don't matter as much. Handhelds, color is everything to me.
I want the bigger screen and everything, but I may just opt for the normal 3DS. Guess it depends. Suuuucks. D:
I'll get one when they're a bit cheaper (post-Christmas sales or something) and I can get an all black or all white model. The bigger screen is nice, but I just think it's altogether better designed; no fingerprint problem, real buttons under the touch screen, no weird bulky lid. Just a shame I don't like the colours available at launch (I'm not one for metallic plastic in general).
I'll definitely be getting the new Circle Pad Pro for it though, it's been indispensable for RE:R.
i just dont wanna see nintendo trowing some s... like "3ds i XL" get me?... if this is the last version in terms of software ill get it ...wouldnt mind seen some other version slimer as long as it dosent have some serious improvements...... in short....this is a must have for the upcoming super smash. period
i'm looking forward to the XL and will buy one. But I think Nintendo should lower the price of the Circle Pad Pro (both the 3DS and the upcoming 3DS XL versions) to just a few bucks above actual manufacturing cost. They shouldn't be gouging us at $20 for a chunk of plastic with a handful of button sensors, a cheap little transmitter, and a couple metal battery contacts. It should cost about $8.99 now that they've passed up the chance to add it to the XL, where it could easily have fit.
if they could make the system region free, that would be a huge plus for me. i really want to play rocket slime 3 and some other titles that I would have imported if they weren't incompatible.
