Former RARE composer - Microsoft 'f@#$ed' RARE over, ruined the company

Coming from former RARE composer, Grant Kirkhope...

"I think Rare have completely f#@$ed themselves. And - it isn't their fault; it's Microsoft's fault. They have completely ruined that company, and it makes me cry every day of my life."

Hmph... RARE will never be so great again.

Is RARE really that bad now? All they've had the opportunity to make are remakes and Kinect Sports crap. If they made an original adventure game just like what they used to make and not Nuts and Bolts style, then we can judge them.

Ug my thoughts exactly, I yearn for the old Banjo-Kazooie days!

Sorry, but RARE screwed RARE. Microsoft just finished the job.

And for everybody else who keeps telling a story filled with truths and half truths and completely fabricated lies, what actually happened was Nintendo had a chance to buy RARE when they went up for sale but passed because, wisely, they thought that the company was overpriced and knew that the glory days were behind them now after the group of developers that would become known as Free Radical disbanded from the company in the late 90's. That's when RARE's problems started and the company was in a state of disarray.

Their output of games for Nintendo were starting to become smaller and smaller and the few games they were supposed to be putting out got delayed like Kameo and the DK racing etc. Starfox Adventures wasn't even originally supposed to be a Star Fox game, it was a game called Dinosaur Planet. All this factored into Nintendo's decision to sell off their percentage of the company and having seen what's further become of RARE today, it's safe to say that Nintendo made the right decision.

I'll never understand why Nintendo sold the rest of RARE to Microsoft. Nintendo, RARE, and Retro... that would have been an unstoppable force.

Retro should hire this guy to ease his pain.

He recently worked on the music in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. While the game sold over 1 mil copies, Big Huge Games went bankrupt. Needless to say, he lost his job.

He left Rare after Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise was released because it was "time to move on", but it's pretty clear he wasn't happy with the company anymore. So due to that, and his personal reason of wanting to go to the US, he moved from England to join BHG.

The guy's got fantastic talent, and his website - while primitive looking - has some really interesting stuff like beta music from Banjo Kazooie and Dream. He's a bro, and he deserves better.

He also applied for a position at Retro but they didn't have any spots for him. Unacceptable, you MAKE a spot for him, lol.

RIDICULOUS!

Seriously Rare turned to shovel looooooooooong before Nintendo (very cleverly) sold it.

eg. Mickey's Speedway, Banjo-TooieMickey's Speedway, Star Fox Adventures.

Just downhill from there.

Nintendo had to sell their shares, since the founders of RARE signed an agreement to sell the whole company to Microsoft.

Since the founders owned the majority of the company, they didn't need Nintendo's say in the matter.
Nintendo then by law had to sell their stake.

Nintendo only had a 49% stake in RARE, so the company didn't need to go through Nintendo to talk about the decision. It's similar to how Nintendo only has 49% ownership in Game Freak, so that company was able to release a Pokemon game on the iPhone last year.

Game Freak is an exclusive developer to Nintendo.
Nintendo owns Creatures Inc. giving them 66% of the Pokemon Company and the Pokemon games, thus Game Freak is unable to develop Pokemon for another system.

Nintendo also supplies Game Freak with a budget, building and anything they need.
Nintendo also is the sole publisher of all of Game Freak'sgames.

Though someone did port Pokemon Yellow to iPhone without permission, causing it to be removed by Nintendo.

To date Nintendo has not allowed any Pokemon game to be developed for any non Nintendo device.

Rare was too comfortable with having their hand held by Nintendo and didn't know what to do when left alone to do a job by themselves. Microsoft thought they were buying Big Boys but wound up paying for Toddlers who always needed their diapers changed. Rare was already going downhill before the transition and MS found out slowly that they had paid for a dud and have now revoked them to do Kinect games until they see that Rare is fit to do anything else.

Game Freak has been releasing games for other platformes as well, eg. PlayStation, Mega Drive, etc.
It's not Nintendo exclusive.

@Lizardon

It is now. It didn't use to be. The last time a Game Freak game came out for anything other than a Nintendo platform was 1999 and that game was Click Medic for PlayStation.

Check your facts.

Not to mention Nintendo now owns the Pokemon IP in full. So much stupidity in the comment section. Game Freak develops the RPG games, nothing more.

Nintendo had finnancial problems in the n64 and Gamecube days (portable gaming saved Nintendo at least twice). However, it's not Nintendo's fault that Microsoft doesn't want to treat RARE like it deserve.

Hadrian wrote:
That's crap, Nintendo had more than enough money especially with Pokemon taking off and giving them a big stream of TV/Movie/Merchandise revenue.

Nintendo can't use resources from the Nintendo Company for everything, that's not how it works. Just like Sony can't use resources from Santa Monica in order to develop a new Uncharted game.

No....Nintendo didn't have any financial problems with either the GameCube or N64. Both those systems made Nintendo lots of money even though they didn't have lots of market share with them.

This is one of the dumbest things i've ever read. Stop making things up, you are making yourself look retarted.

Yes, what a completely retarded thing of me to say when MS's sale of Rare and Nintendo's sale of Retro took place months of each other.

Pokémon Say Tap?. It's published by The Pokémon Company, not Nintendo, but it's an official Pokémon game available for iOS and Android.

Looks like something based on the card game, so I'm not so sure that it is a big deal. We've seen the TCG branch online iirc too.

I stopped loving Rare after their awesome NES days. After that, they became more and more mediocre. Well the Blast Corps was quite fun.
