The following information supposedly comes from A GameStop manager ...
- stores will be offering a better upgrade incentive for those trading in a 3DS towards a 3DS XL
- in-store data transfer for those trading 3DS to 3DS XL
These are the type of things we want to hear for those looking to grab a 3DS XL. Let's hope that this information gets confirmed soon. Thanks to DelightfullyDreadful for the heads up!

That would be great news I'm just not sure how it would work. I talked to the manager at my local GameStop just this evening and he told me the only Gamestops with Wifi are in malls. I live in a major city so this was a surprise.
He did tell me that he would allow me to take it to the neighboring McDonalds and use their wifi if I left my wallet as collateral so at least he is working with me. Now I just want to know what cash value I'll get for my 3DS.
Wow. Still no reason for me to trade, but perhaps my brother might be interested.
Only way I'd trade the 3DS for the 3DSXL is I got like 140 or more for it.
Sounds good, I certainly hope so. Last time I was at GS they told me they'd only give me $50 for a 3DS (well $75 that week since they were doing a special where you'd get an extra $25 for trading in a Wii, 360, PS3, 3DS, or Vita). I'd hope that an extra incentive is extra credit to go towards an XL. Something like $100 for an original 3DS would be good for me. It'll also be great they'd let me transfer in the store after the purchase.
In all, sounds good. I seriously hope this is not a fake.
..It's 160 NEW, good luck.
If this ends up being true I might be a buyer, but if not I don't have the money-- finishing up a PC
It's $170 new. I didn't expect to get that much I am only saying that is the only way I'd do it. I was one of the fools who bought it for $250 so I deserve something. But no it won't happen. Which means simply I won't buy the XL. Simple as that. I never saw a point in it anyways what with it not having the built-in CPP.
I wanna see this new system in person and hold it in my hands before I make a final decision
@auragar I really don't see why gamestop would give you so much for a handheld that they sell NEW for 170. A refurbished 3DS goes for $150. A used (not refurbished) probably goes for less. It really wouldn't make sense for them to give you that much.
I feel ripped off being one of the stupid people who bought the 3DS at $250 and that I deserve something. I don't expect them to do that, which simply means I am not getting a 3DSXL. There really is no point in it what with the no CPP built-in, anyways.
@auragar Well, you got the 21 (22?) games and the ambassador title. You also got to play the system for much longer than anyone else. I'm also an ambassador and i like the system so much i would probably pay more to enjoy the games that are coming for it even more. Also, the circle pad is kind of useless although i kind of like it
I asked 3 different stores in Omaha a week ago and those idiots didn't even know the 3DS could do a damn system transfer.
Yeah, it'd be cool if they do this. But I don't think my store has the Wi-Fi to do this, it is in a mall though, so I could be wrong. Regardless, if it doesn't work that way I'll just trade-in my 3DS after I do the system transfer. I'm gonna need the credit for the Wii U anyways.
Do you even need wifi for a system transfer? I thought it works over local wireless.
Most of those games are becoming available for others so those don't count. The whole ambassador title does absoltely nothing. What does it do? Sit there and reminds me of my being screwed. Getting to play it longer than others? PLaying what games? For the first few months there was only garbage and I didn't play most of them. And though it's a cool system I need all the money I can save to be saved. And while it is useless if it had be implemented then it might have actually gotten some more use. And while I know they didn't do it just to screw us (Ninty is actually a decent company)... I still don't feel I've been compensated for being screwed over.
You'd think it would work over local wireless...
So, with this in mind...how much would it cost out of pocket to trade in my 3ds for a 3ds xl? I'm just curious as I'll likely not be trading or buying the xl...for now at least.
Well… they haven't said yet, I bet for the promotion they'll give you $110-130 in credit for the promotion. So anywhere between $90 - $70 for the upgrade. That's my guess at least. I know that after the launch I'm sure the amount you'll get for a normal 3DS will drop down a good $20 or so more.
If this is true, this is a really good deal.
I did some research and it is over local wireless. Very nice to know. Now I just need to pick my color.
@auragar
Well you get the games for free of course...and seriously... the gba games especially are far from trash(and aren't going to be released..so they say).
If my 3DS didn't have the ambassador titles it would feel really incomplete and sad...that's just me though.
I'll only take Gamestop up on this if they offer $100 for my 3DS, no less, otherwise I can just sell it on amazon/ebay or something!
Sorry, but according to this video (and several others) it does need to connect to the internet. It's because it's not just a case of transferring the software, Nintendo's servers need to de authorise your original machine and authorise the new one so they can keep track of what 3DS has what content registered to it.
Well Amazon Trade in Value for the 3DS is like 80-85 bucks gamestop maybe 70-80. Probably they might up it up to 100 or 120 max.
@auragar
Why do you keep saying you got screwed? YOU were the one who decided that $250 was a fair price to purchase the 3DS for and YOU were the one who then bought the portable. No one screwed you over. Things drop in price. Stop crying about it.
You should be happy that you even got anything from Nintendo for free (the ambassador plus early free eShop games). As far as I know, companies don't give out free stuff because their MSRP on a product goes down. You are entitled to NOTHING. Be happy you got something. Afterall, YOU control what you buy, when you buy it, and how much you think is reasonable to pay for it.
Also: The 10 NES games were always going to be made available on the eShop. Nintendo said so when they announced the ambassador program. The GBA games, however, are a different story.
Even if they do release, you still got a lot of great classic games for free. It's time to put on your big kid pants and stop whining over a decision YOU made.
