GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - The longest it's taken you to finish a game

ENDOFDAYTHOUGHTS 01

We all like to enjoy some video games in our free time. The problem is, we don't always have as much free time as we'd like. Okay...none of us have the amount of free time that we want. We have to squeeze in the fun with the few hours a week we get. That can make tackling a video game quite a chore.

You may start off with the best intentions of finishing off a game in a set amount of time. You know you're going to be able to crank a full game out within a week or so...but then that pesky thing called life gets in the way. What you thought would take a week has now taken a month...and you're not even halfway finished yet.

Just how long have you gone from starting a game to finishing it? Do you still have games in your library that you haven't completed, even though you have the intentions of doing so? Don't worry, you're definitely not the only one! Rest assured, everyone has that backlog of games they've played and haven't played, all of which we want to get back to.

Leave a comment and let us know your deep, dark shame! Have you fumbled with finishing a game for weeks...months...or even years?

Batman:The Animated Series for the Original Nintendo GameBoy. I've had that game since Day 1: November 13th, 1993. I still have a hard time with this game, I have never beaten it and it's nearly 20 years old. Stupid Penguin's Level is the one I ALWAY's get stuck on. Remember the birds from NES Ninja Giaden? Well imagine having to fight 7 of them while on an elevating platform over a pit of spikes.NOT FUN.

Oh lord...ANIMAL CROSSING.

Other than that, I've checked I put 90 hours into Monster Hunter Tri, and I still can't kill/repel that damn lagiacrus.

I spent over 7 years with the original Super Mario Brothers and Majora's Mask (Mostly because I started those when I was still in kindergarden)

Only the Pokemon games take me forever. B/W has like 400 hours on them. Took forever to get all the pokemon.

Took me nearly a decade to finish Jet Set Radio Future after getting it bundled with the original Xbox way back when.

I stopped playing No More Heroes after a couiple of attempts at the alst boss (or maybe its the second last boss). Played Bully quite a bit but kinda stopped a few years ago. Started Okami but didn't get too far. As for other systems Red Dead Redemption I played for quite a while but never finished it yet and MGS 4 I bought on sale and only played it for like an hour. Should pick it up again at some point

I bought xenoblade at launch and left it because I was stuck at the acidic heart

Oh, right. I still need to finish Final Fantasy III DS...

Yeah, I gots a lot of games I really need to finish right now. Hopefully I can get 'em all out of the way before the Wii U hits!

I still need to finish:
- Final Fantasy III DS
- Final Fantasy IV DS (finished GBA though)
- Final Fantasy IX
- Persona PSP (had since launch)
- Eternal Sonata
- Persona 4 (had since launch)
- Rule of Rose (had for years)
- Devil Summoner 2 (had since launch)
- No More Heroes (had a long time)
- Wario Land: Shake It
And many more. And this is just using games that I put off for years, not recent ones I started putting off too (like MadWorld or Kirby Mass Attack).

Some games I finally beat a while ago that I had put off for at least a year or two included Dead Space, Dead Rising, BulletWitch, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Sonic Colors, Spirit Tracks, Rhythm Heaven, and so on.

The longest game would have to be Golden Sun 2, which I got at launch and didn't finish until last year.

Other long ones are Paper Mario 64, Super Metroid and Sin & Punishment on Virtual Console. All of which I got at launch, plowed through most of it and randomly stopped near the end.

Paper Mario I was in Bowser's Castle at the end, Super Metroid I had beat all the bosses but like one? Two? Aside from Mother Brain. Sin & Punishment I was apparently on the very last stage (before the final boss) but got stuck for some reason.

Sin & Punishment I finally sat down *last night* and finished (so took 5 years) on Easy because I decided to buy S&P2 from BestBuy for $4.99. Have to say the game went from "Well, it's pretty cool" to "I love this game" and I can't believe I had such a hard time and stopped playing (this goes for everything I do this with usually). Pumped to go get S&P2 from the store on Monday (don't have the ability to go before then).

Oh, and I still haven't finished Xenoblade, but that was because I was playing a bunch of 360 stuff for a bit, and then Pikmin 2 and then I just haven't gotten back to it. I love the game, I just haven't had time to invest in specifically playing that. Do hope to play more soon/before Last Story though.

My Dad surprised me with a copy of Majora's Mask earlier than the release date due to a shipping error if I recall correctly, and I just finished it about a year ago. Yeah. That's a long time. I encountered a bug on my original file that prevented the game from remembering how many Zora eggs I had collected and left in the tank. No matter what I did the game would just put them all back in the pirate's fortress the moment I left the marine research lab. My eagerness to see the story through screeched to a halt, as you can imagine. I still played, gathering all the masks and heart pieces that I could at that stage of the game, I just really didn't have it in me to start the entire game over from the beginning.

I've also never finished a single game in the Donkey Kong Country series...

EDIT: I missed my chance for a Game Graphic Glitch Gremlin reference... Dang.

There are so many games I have yet to finish, the one that took me the longest to finish was probably Metroid Prime 3, I had almost finished the game and needed to collect a few more things before the final boss and just stopped for a year. Finished it up during my first year of college.

There are a number of games in my collection I didn't complete 'till years after picking it up. I typically get distracted by whatever game I just recently purchased. (It's a vicious cycle.)

I haven't finished a console Zelda game since Ocarina of Time on N64. Yeah, I agree, that's pretty sad.

I finally finished the original NES Kid Icarus by way of 3D Classics: Kid Icarus on 3DS. The custom control mode is a bit of a cheat, but I've been trying to finish that game since 1988. :)

Etrian Odyssey III.

The game doesn't even keep track of how long you've played, but I'm confident I have more than 200 hours on it.

For me Pikmin 2 was the longest that I have kept track of. I got it launch day and was really excited to get home and play it but some hooker ex-coworker said that game is for babies and it sat on the shelf for 8 long years. This last spring I decided enough was enough and I finally played through it. I got to the ending and have most of the treasures but I am still missing a few. I know that I got a lot of NES games that I have hardly touched and probably wont for a very long time...

the longest in game time it took me to finish a game I think would be Xenoblade (105 hours). and by finishing I mean finishing the story or adventure not including post game replay value. Monster Hunter tri is probably going to best that as I have spent a few hundred hours and still have not finished the story. there are also about 7 games I have bought that I have not started including Professor Layton and the Last Spector, hopefully I get to it before the next one comes out.

other than that, I cant think of any other wii games I own that I havent finished, nor any 3DS games, but I do know there are some DS games I've never finished, Glory of Heracles, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Sky are the two that first come to mind.

Over 2 years to finish Ultima IV on my commodore 64 back in the 80's. That's basically continuous play.

In terms of procrastination, I'd say FF7. I kept re-playing it to a point and then stopping for years until about 6 years ago.

Chrono Trigger DS, almost a year since I got it, and I haven't beaten it yet. I'm currently in the Black Omen, which I heard it's the last part before being called beaten.
Other than that, I guess Dragon Quest IX is the second game that took me almost a year as well.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, took me 3 months playing about 4 or 5 hours a day to finish, no counting all the hearts and side quests. Right now I'm playing Xenoblade, I'm about 48 hours in and I don't see the ending in site.

Mewtaker wrote:Well, the Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess took me from 2006 to 2009 because of "life" lol. Skywards Sword on the other hand, I had a good portion of free time within a months span so yeah :P

Oh my! That is EXACTLY the same thing that happened to me! And the same years! I also finished it in 2009! And I only had 52 hours in it (to be honest, that 52 hours were done in only five gaming sessions, four in 2006 and the last one being in 2009)

But the longest it took me was Super Mario Bros. One of my first game, yet I only finished it THIS YEAR, when I finally started playing my 3DS Ambassador version. Hum... When did I play it for the first time? I DON'T KNOW. But I was born in 1987, so I must have played it around 1990-1991.

Also, the number of unfinished game in my list is VERY BIG. Before 2 years ago, I had only cleared like 5 or 6 games, yet I played all the big ones, and MANY of the small ones. Once I tried to count them all... More than 150 NES games, more than 50 SNES games, around 25 N64 games (maybe more), around 30 Game cube games (I still own 25 of them) and around 30 retails games for Wii (I have downloaded many others, around 10 to 20). I possess around 30 game for the DS and I already have 14 3DS retail game (many more DSi Ware and 3DS downloadable ones, almost 40), half a dozen original game boys games, 3 GBC games and 4 GBA ones. Of all of these, I must have finished around 20 games MAXIMUM. I also have a PS2 capable PS3, and have one PS1 game, 2 PS2 games and 32 PS3 games. And seriously, I don't EVEN WANT to try to count the downloadable games I have (I'm PS+, so I get some free every months, I can't keep up! So I didn't play many of them, so I won't count them at all) AND because of all the steam sales, I have more than 200 games on it. (but I played only half of them, so make it 100)
So... around 527 games played... around 20 of them cleared... I still have more than 500 games I have started that I need to finish! :D
...
...
...
Oh good grief! >_<

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Not because I didn't have the time to beat it, but because I got so frustrated looking for those damn Sky Temple Keys. I had 8 of them and couldn't find the last one so I just gave up...for like five years. It wasn't until I played Corruption that I decided to go back to it and finish it. Miraculously, after so many years of hiatus, I managed to find the final key deep within a Lake in Dark Aether and bam. My way to finishing the game was set in stone! It didn't take long to finish it after that! Felt so great.

My farthest back is The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons.

Can't beat the last boss. Yet I cleared through Ages in a snap lol.

If we are talking about beating games to my satisfaction, then between games that I have not tackled on hardest difficulties, that I have not gotten 100% completion, or that I have not 1cced, there are really too many to count. Not that I mind -- if it were easy, it would not be worth doing :D
