Iwata: I suppose many people may take a quick glance at New Super Mario Bros. 2 and think, "Oh, it's the usual Super Mario."
Ishikawa: Yeah.
Iwata: But I get the impression from when I actually played it that if you think it's the same and don't take it seriously you'll run into trouble.
Amano: That's right. The staff had a strong desire this time to think of tough things that people might even get angry about. And we've changed some things with regard to the setup to make a fresh impression. For example, this time you can play special stages called Dash Mario.

Well, its made by a different team right? I imagine it wouldn'tbe a usual Mario game
I love how he says "actually" to differate himself from those who've never played it and complain. xp
If its like the chest level from the Rayman Orgins demo I played then yeah I'm gonna hate these stages.
@Mirr0rR3flection
Implying that when people actually play it there won't be things to still complain about.
Regardless, I will be surprised if it is actually a challenging game.
You also gotta consider, how much does Iwata really play games?
@MoldyClay Mario games usually have some challenge to them. I found the Wii one to be quite challenging near the end. Also, I'm pretty sure iwata plays plenty of games. :p
^ How do you know? ^^ Apparantly, Miyamoto plays games very rarely~
It's bad if they talk about a bonus minigame type of level deal as the challenge part.
I'll in fact make a very very important note to self: Don't take this game seriously at all and be careless as all heck.
People will never agree on whether a 2D Mario is difficult because of the variety of experience between them. 20+ years of playing Mario makes you too good to cater to...unless you want Mario to be like I Wanna Be the Guy or something. We'll probably have to live with extra modes/end game being the only challenging parts.
I find 2D Mario plenty challenging, even with the 25 years playing the series under my belt.
I won't lie, the series has gotten easier as time went on, but that's mostly in-part, due to the new skills like wall jumping,d triple jump, and midair twist ( keeps you airborn in NSMBW ) ...it has nothing to do with the design of the levels.
Dosn't help that you have to avoid coins and 1-ups or you'll end up with max life.
I'll need to try it first. Not getting it at launch either way.
The only difference between the Dash levels and normal ones is that you can't stop running. Thats like saying a scrolling level is a "minigame" type of level.
For people who say the game won't be challening, have you played the game yet? So then you don't know if the game will be challening or not. There is also a chance you'll come across a level you can't pass because you always fall into pits. Stop saying the game won't be challening just because you have an invincilbe suit or lots of lives. Rayman Origins doesn't even have lives and it's as challenging as hell! This new approach is to please yonger players, that's all and the suit is an option.
It is a minigame. The Iwata Asks interview refers to it as such.
This is not your fathers Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros 2: Japan was the hardest one I've played. Coincidently also the best one (aside from mario land 1 and 2: 6 Golden coins).
As long as it's better designed than the likes of Yoshi's Island DS I'm happy. Here's hoping by challenging they mean legitimate difficulty and not just ways to annoy players by tricking them like in that game or the Lost Levels or perhaps that final secret level from Super Mario Advance 3.
