Rough start for 3DS eShop digital/retail sales

The 3DS eShop in Japan just got two major titles. Both New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Onitore are available via the 3DS eShop and retail. Obviously Nintendo underestimated the demand for retail titles going digital, because the eShop is currently iffy, if not down in Japan. Let's hope Nintendo fixes the issue soon!

Maybe a ton of people are investing on digital versions? The eshop crashing can be a good sign if that's the case

Nintendo: "Our eShop servers are crashing!"
People: "How many people are using it?"
Nintendo: "...many."

I had a feeling Nintendo was gearing up for these releases. This week should have been a new round of Theatrhythm content but it didn't come out with no word as to why. Although it is a guess, I assume it is because Nintendo wanted to keep as little stress as possible on the shop for DLC.

I bet as many as 25 to 50 people are using the eShop at the same time in Japan. That would probably be enough to take it down.

I had no trouble downloading New Super Mario Bros. 2 on my import 3DS. Loving the game so far!

Is there a link to where this story came from?

I'm sure if more than 5 people use it at once it goes down.

you still won't see me buying retail games on it until they have a real account system.

More like I won't be buying a digital version of any game for $40.
Same reason I hate the Xbox "Games on Demand" thing.
I'd rather have a physical copy 100% of the time.

I like to think the discussions went as follows...

Intern: So, how many servers should we set up to prepare for NSMB2?
Executive: ... 5?
Intern: You... you can't be serious.
Executive: To many?
Intern: Wha- ?!
Executive: All right, it's settled, 2 servers. You're going places you know, you have hutzpah.

I have decided to get NSMB 2 on the eShop because it will give me 100 cn coins and i don't need the boxart for the game that way either and i can make a new folder now called Downloadable Retail Games from the eShop. Also i hope it is not near or around 50 dollars. Because i only have 6.21 eShop Dollars left on here at the moment not counting the 2 3DS prepaid cards i just bought. I hope that it costs 39.95 or 39.99 with a tax making it even out enough to where i can get colors 3D too.

You mean to tell me that Nintendo was unprepared for the amount of people willing to download the new Mario title, Nintendo stop being EA!

Well then, it seems like a good amount of people prefer the digital version, that's ought to be a good sign.

Well for me it means quite a few things and i will point them out:

1. You can get it on the offical day and not have to wait until your local retailers have the game in stock and risk waiting longer for it.

2. Minor detail but worth noting, no need for manuals and Club Nintendo codes or ads that you will throw away.

3. You have a copy of the game that you can delete and re buy for free if you ever had to free space up for whatever reason.

4. Since people will do this, you get to laugh behind the backs of those who chose to wait until their local store has it in stock and not risk being one of those being laughed at.

5. Like those pre ordering the game you get to enjoy it sooner if you download a full version of the game which means walkthroughs sooner those who will need one too.

The only thing we have yet to know is what the price of the downloadable version of the game will cost.

I will be prepared if the game is $39.99 tax if the tax comes out to being around 42 to 46 dollars i have $6.21 left in my eShop balance and 2 unused 3DS Prepaid cards in reserve just to get this since it is a smarter and yet less risky move since i won't have to wait that way.

The bad side is what if i lost or broke my 3ds by mistake sure, i'd have to get all my games recovered if i could or re buy the one i lost. There i covered that too.

I am not saying don't go physical copy, i'm just saying if you want it sooner without the extra wait or packaging then download would be your way to go as it is going to be mine for NSMB 2.

I still think the whole concept of buying it digitally is stupid. It's only good for convenience, physical space and impatience.

Game isn't going anywhere, you don't need it day one, you're not missing out by others getting it first. And the convenience could eventually ruin everything when you consider that it is bound to your 3DS. You can't sell it/trade it, let anyone borrow it, or play it on another console without transferring. There are other potential future problems with digital, but that's all future talk. I also take issue with paying $40 for anything digital in the first place, since it isn't even real. And it's not even a big game in size or length (inb4ThatsWhatSheSaid).

But I'm not here to say DON'T DOWNLOAD IT, I just think it is dumb regardless of how you can now play NSMB2 or Kid Icarus without having to do that painful task of swapping carts.

The best argument someone made in the one topic was not having to pay tax on the game if you buy digitally.

Anyway, that sucks about the servers, but that's their own fault, and the fact that all those impatient (and baw localization) people apparently imported 3DS systems, adding to the Japanese kids downloading it already.

@MoldyClay

You still do have to pay tax when purchasing digitally...well unless you put in a zip code for a place that doesn't bother with tax. I just bought Mutant Mudds today and it came with a 61 cent tax.

I'm still going to buy my 3DS games physically, because I like building up a game collection (one that could actually gain value), especially when the downloadable title is no cheaper than the physical one, and since there's no actual account that these downloadable games will be tied to, unlike digital games for other platforms, such as iOS or Android.

I don't mind buying games built solely for the eShop, but if a physical alternative is available, I'm going for that one.

Wha-? I've never seen any GameStop in the cities I've been in not have a game available when the store opens on the release date. I can't comment on Best Buy or Walmart because I rarely buy games from them.

You know there's an option to just add the exact amount of money to buy a game, right? What you do is go in to purchase a game, at some point it will tell you you don't have enough money in your account, on that screen there should be an option to "Add required funds".

Nintendo ill-prepared for something relating to networking and online? I'm shocked!

I think "ill-prepared" is giving them too much credit for preparation.

What Legend said. I don't think I'd call amazing server-crashing sales a rough start.

I'm not too surprised. This is good news though since it means it was more popular than they thought it was going to be. (Or they really don't know what they are doing with online...)
