I hate to be "that guy" and all, but...it really makes me sad how blatantly a soulless, heartless money grab this game is. Everything is recycled from NSMBW and slightly tweaked, and the visuals...are just completely lazy.
Worst of all, it looks shallow. Not as is shallow gameplay, but as in a game that obviously had no heart, soul, or love put into it. It's so blatantly a corporate game, ordered to be made in a boardroom by corporate men with corporate minds and corporate hearts. Everything about it was made to be marketable, and to appeal to the primal side of the mind that gets addicted to simple, disgustingly cutesy games like this.
And I'm not trying to be anti-Nintendo here; SM3DL was brilliantly creative and has lots of soul go into it, which is why it's disappointing to see THIS in comparison. It's like, oh, 3D Land sold well, but it didn't sell truckloads like the New series did? Do you you really not have enough money, Nintendo? You're so greedy that you have to make more Mario platformers a year than there are COD games, and not even put any effort into half of them?
It's absolutely shameful, and there is zero artistic justification for it.
I do console myself, however, with this knowledge: Nintendo games like Skyward Sword are so massive and have an insane amount of love, care, and artistic creativity put into making them; even the details. These games are wonderfully well-built like no other games in existence. On top of that Nintendo is a hardware maker, so between all that I imagine it must cost Nintendo a ton of money to make the beautiful, awesome things it makes, so they need to sell out every once in a while in order to stay afloat and still turn a profit. So, because Pikmin and Zelda and 3D Mario prove Nintendo still has a soul, I'm willing to ignore this game and just let it go. I can understand.
Still, I just felt it need to be said. Games like these with literally no purpose, design, intention or use but to make money need to be called out for what they are.

You want to talk about recycled and repetitive, I feel like i've heard all this before.
If Nintendo is going to put out a rehashed looking/sounding (music) game, then they are going to get rehashed complaints.
The game has no soul and the only reason it seems new is because LOL COIN RUSH MODE, but most people can see through that and the fact that it's just a blatant cash-grab title.
From everything I've heard, it's short, not that hard, some bosses are rehashed (in particular, the final boss, but also the fact we're doing the Koopa Kids again), the music's exactly the same, and the level design/mechanics are not that much different if you're playing it normally and the coin thing is basically just as pointless as achievements. It's just something to justify replaying the game's levels if you completed it otherwise.
And the reward for 1 million coins is idiotic going by the official Japanese site.
If the superior NSMB U wasn't coming out this year then fair enough, it's something for some people to past the time with - but 2-3 months ahead of it, it almost begs the question: what's the point...?
And yet the games are still loads of fun. I would also rather the 2D Mario series move on and become different from one another again like the numbered games and 'World' did but as long as these games stay fun I'm not complaining.
Sorry, but what he said and what you said, It's just your opinions, of which I do not share, not fact.
The game has no soul? If I play the game and I enjoy it, then to me, I guess it has a soul right? See why it's all just a matter of subjectivity? What's "meh" to one person, is "OMG I really enjoyed that to another." Part of this clearly stems from being from different eras of gaming. Back in the day when you were still a fetus, I played Megaman game after Megaman game that were released yearly with the same look and everything but just with new robot masters and a few new moves and I enjoyed it. I didn't cry foul and wax on about how unoriginal and soulless the subsequent sequels were because to me they weren't. I appreciated them for what they were. A steady flow of fun games in a series not meant to push the envelop, but to be decent experiences.
This whole "every game has to be super original" and "super fresh" or else it's a failure or lazy blah blah blah thing is all part of the hive mindset of the new breed of gamers today who think every new game has to be unique, justifiable to them (which is probably the most ridiculous of all the arguments made and shows the level of arrogance and sense of entitlement) and be the most amazing looking game ever. This type of mentality is why studios are practically going broke trying to make games to appease today's gamers with astronomical gaming budgets. It's silly. Learn to enjoy games, not over analyze and hyper criticize them. If you've convinced yourself that NSMB2 doesn't appeal to you then by all means don't buy it, and you're certainly entitled to your opinion on the game, but don't come on here saying the things you guys say about NSMB2 as if they are inarguable facts just because it's what you believe and so it must be true and shared by all because that couldn't be further from the reality of the situation. There are far more who don't share that view and the past sales of the series as well as the future sales of this title have and will prove that to be fact yet again.
Again, I have no problem with people coming on here and voicing their view of the game whether it's in favor of or not a fan of, but when people start with this whole over-aggressive borderline condescending sense of what's original and what's not. What's soulless and what's not. What's "justifiable " (Please) and what's not. That's when I feel a little perturbed and feel the need to defend my gaming preferences. You don't speak for me about this series because in my opinion, NSMB2 is a fun throwback title that's about getting your fix of good 'ol Mario platforming. Two reviews have already come out giving it a 90 and an 80, so despite Nintendo apparently being lazy (to which again I say ) and looking for nothing more than a cash grab (which is so crazy btw that a gaming company running a business would be looking for ways to make cash I know) , they've still managed to make yet again another solid Mario game, that thankfully, some of us will be able to allow ourselves to enjoy for what it is.

i can see what they mean by their arguments
and i can see what you mean by yours
they are not saying every game needs to feel fresh and new
but back in the day a new 2D mario used to feel fresh and new (new look, new music, new overworld)
the heart of mario, the platforming is still really fun and might be better in some cases (look at the video for world 2 last castle, that level looks great)
2D mario to them and to alot of people did not used to mean "safe" "lazy" (when talking about music and look)
mario used to change it up and now he doesnt
(nsmb2 DOES change it up, coin rush, dash mario, its not just get from point a to b now)
the reason some feel nsmbwU is more fresh compared to this one is because it has ZOMG PRETTY BACKGROUNDS
i honestly think that if this game had sprites and new music but the exact same levels and ideas, they would be creaming their pants (and so would i)
this game is made by new blood, and they said they have alot to live up to especially after 3d land and because the wiiU version is not that far from now
we might get to see some cool ideas in the levels (seriously look at world 2 last castle in the video)
livetoplay wrote:they are not saying every game needs to feel fresh and new

Again, the first two Japanese Super Mario Bros. games where pretty much the same. I know, now we're counting 4 NSMB games that look the same... but as someone has pointed out, many of the changes in old SMB weren't because they wanted them to become better, but because the technology or their understanding of it kept getting better. They could do more of what they wanted to. Today, performance is cheap (for SMB games; they don't need a lot), so change doesn't come automatically.
yea i know, they usually just say SMB to SMB2(doki doki panic) to SMB3 to SMW
those are 4 games each different (differet music, look, overworld)
nsmb1,nsmb2,nsmbwii,nsmbU
non have better music than those previous ones, non look more inspired that those previous ones (exept maybe nsmbU, not the music though)
and come on you cant honestly think that just because "many of the changes in old SMB weren't because they wanted them to become better, but because the technology or their understanding of it kept getting better"
the technology from DS to 3DS IS better
the technology from Wii to WiiU IS better
so why didnt these games change? (nsmbU's overworld might be differnt from the previous line of NEW games, i hope it is)
i love these games anyways. im gonna buy 2, one digital, one retail.
the only complaint I have is the music (and lack of big world)

Seems you didn't get my point... my point was that in the SMB days, technology was at first limiting what they were trying to do, and they just got closer to what all games would have been like if the technology had been good from the start. DS was already powerful enough for everything they wanted to do, so there were no limitations, and nothing they could correct in later games.
I kinda agree with music though, though I dunno exactly what 2's and U's music will be like.
yea i see what you mean
they wanted a look that they finally accomplished in nsmb
but that only applies to the character designs
they prefer 3D models that provide more detailed smooth movements (like shigeru once said he loved the way marios knee bends along with moving platforms) (and i agree)
BUT
there is no reason why the map NEEDS to stay the same
there is no reason the music NEEDS to be same-y
because really thats the only complaints people have
i can see why they make those maps, they are more streamlined and easy to access and understand
people seem to blame that on nintendo's "lazyness"
but in reality its just nintendo trying to make the series accessible
nsmbwU is trying to do differently with the backgrounds and i think they look amazing
im mostly playing devils advocate here
the only complaint i have with this series is the horrible music.
i dont mind the maps, art direction, generic worlds
the main thing here is the platforming
and that is still going strong (stronger than ever i think)
im just trying to see the point of view from other peoples like snowflires
i can see why he(and many people) thinks they come off an assembly line of sorts
because he sees the same backgrounds, music, and worlds
so he thinks theres some machine that randomly generates levels at the click of a button
"and come on you cant honestly think that just because "many of the changes in old SMB weren't because they wanted them to become better, but because the technology or their understanding of it kept getting better"

Yeah, you need to watch NSMBU with audio and then come back to me. I can't say much for NSMB2, but if you're saying there's no difference between NSMBW and NSMBU, you obviously wasn't paying attention.
They really need to do something for the music. Hire someone else. We need new themes for each game and at the same time this theme which is the one form NSMBWii is way better than the new one for NSMBU... it seems that they really got lazy as far as the music is concerned.
And these voices in world 1-1... I mean if they just rehash NSMBWii themes, then just leave it as it is and don't add those horrible, horrible voices.
They couldn't at least make original music for this one..

i dont care about how it looks, im fine with it. i prefer prites but its fine.
im just gonna play this game in mute, and have the old music play in the background

Damn, give it a more lively beat at least... The NSMB series has quite possibly the worst choice of music of all the Mario games.

You're seriously comparing a sequel made decades ago to the very first game in the series, to this?
Like, seriously? You don't see anything wrong with your comparison?
