BlockShift hits Android...looks very familiar

Man, some people don't even try anymore. I can fully respect the amount of skill it takes to make your own game, but why just blatantly copy someone else's game? I wonder what Nintendo will have to say about this. Thanks to Jacob for the heads up!

Hey developer here!
I'm well aware of how much I suck, but im just one developer(1 man developer) who was inspired by everything Intelligent Systems and Nintendo make.
I'm not saying this is my idea at all. I made this game only to test myself to see what I can do on my own.
I saw a lot of people's complaints about pushmo and I tried to add a few (online database for level sharing, special blocks(vines and hopefully a lot more to come), convert images from your gallery and convert them to levels) changes to make the game more fun.
I also tried my hardest not to copy any levels pushmo made and had a lot of help creating brand new levels.
The biggest point of all is that the game is free for anyone to play, and I hope anyone that plays my game highly considers buying a 3ds and getting pushmo for the real experience.
Thanks for all the comments, I know where you are all coming from and I agree for the most part, I just wanted to learn so I copied the best of the best.

@AptInteractive well I'll be dammed. As long as you aren't making money I can't see myself being too mad after that

@LegendofSantiago
whether or not he makes money on this is irrelevant.
This will cause Nintendo to lose money on an original puzzler/IP.
The fact that it even takes in QR codes from the 3DS is all the more reason to NOT buy the game on 3DS.

Nintendo will take it down soon enough.

@AptInteractive

You're not going to advance in game design by simply copying another title. You may want to remove the app before Nintendo does it themselves. Nothing kills your career in the gaming industry like having a track record of breaking Nintendo copyright.

Shameful. Stuff like this makes me hate phone gaming. Honestly, developer, there's no excuse for this.

Sure the games are really really similar but at least its free, and he did try to add stuff to make it somewhat different then pushmo. I tried the game plays well and I like it but I also love Pushmo.

@Kolma yeah, I said too mad, I didn't say I'd let him off the hook. As it has been said, this is the kind of thing that is hurting Nintendo. Same with all stars, it'll make people think "why buy a Nintendo console if I can play the same game elsewhere". That's pretty much my biggest complaint about blatant ripoffs. It would be worse if you where charging for it, but then people can say why buy Pushmo when I can get the same thing for free. I'm a bit torn on the matter

Surprised it took this long.

Saw a comment saying who needs handheld gaming when you have mobile games like this?
Okay, take the game down now. It also seems to be ripping off paper Mario.

I can see where your coming from. If I was a game developer I would do the same, get inspiration from another game like for example Pushmo. But I would make it unique in my own way too.

You should work in a company then. I understand your point, but making it public is different, and may get you in trouble. You can make some of your work into a portfolio and apply for big gaming developers.

I'm overjoyed to hear that you're a Nintendo fan inspired by their work and that your app is available for free. It puts your app in an entirely different light knowing that you aren't like Zynga, knocking off a successful game to make a profit. However, games like yours only give the mainstream media more ammunition in their war against traditional gaming. Nintendo's games already have a very hard time defending themselves against Google's and Apple's complete failure to or disregard for filtering their download services. Nintendo already has Super Mario Brothers clones, Mario Kart clones, and Pokemon clones to deal with.

BlockShift's compatibility with Pushmo QR Codes really goes against something you're saying. It's a good idea not to copy Pushmo levels but the fact that BlockShift reads the exact same QR Codes allows for exactly that. Nobody who sees an interestingly designed Pushmo level online designed by a 3DS owner will be at all interested in purchasing a 3DS or Pushmo for themselves when they have your app for free. It's ultimately damaging to Nintendo (especially considering Pushmo's status as a "new I.P.", something Nintendo fans beg for and need to succeed) and it doesn't at all help the outlook that gamers have of the supposed 'dedicated-gaming-handheld/console-killing smart phone' scene.

From the looks alone of BlockShift I can tell you're a talented developer, so why not make something original? The various smart phone 'App Store' environments could use talent like yours to actually make them into the thing that the mainstream media makes them out to be. In this day and age where Nintendo's relevance and originality are both (for whatever reasons) being questioned, apps like these are nothing but harmful regardless of the developers intentions behind them. I do not mean to knock you or your talent as a developer but you should consider removing your app as soon as possible.

I may never play this game since I own Pushmo already, but I'm fine with the existence of this knock-off. A wise man once said "Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing."

Also for all those who say there is no differance have u even played the game have u seen the different block type with vines that adds a whole new element to the puzzles. Pushmo doesnt have vines u can climb.

Downloaded and played this. It was a good laugh, hope it gets taken down.

I reported it and gave it a one star rating.

I think it's fine to let people who don't have a 3DS play a game like Pushmo. Especially if it's free.
User avatar

^ Nintendo exists because people have to buy their systems to play their games. Pushmo is important for Nintendo because it's arguably its biggest download-only project, and Nintendo is trying hard to get people to use the eShop. One of the comments on the Google Play page for this piece crap says "who needs a handheld when I can get this for free?".

Wow you guys are cruel. He just made a freaking game. I know when I was just learning programming I made a platformer based off SMB3. I eventually turned it into an engine and made a game off it.

He's not selling the game but developers gotta start with something. If they modularize their code enough they can reuse a lot of what they write to make a wide variety of games.

Basically: Chill the f**k out
