A portion of a Kingdom of Tales interview with Tales producer Makoto Yoshizumi (Google translated)
Kot : Now, let's talk about Yoshito Higuchi (producer of Tales of Vesperia)
Y : Yes, Higuchi-san ! Well, as you know, he is working on the next Smash Bros.. This is unfortunate for us and the Tales of series, but it has for some years.
Kot: A few years?
Y : Yes, you know, Sakurai (director of Smash Bros. series) is an acquaintance, and he came to me and said "Hey, lend me Higuchi-san, will you?" and I said "Okay" * Laughs *
Kot : It's a question many fans ask: since Higuchi-san working on the next Smash Bros., can we hope to see one or more characters of Tales in the next Smash Bros?
Y : It is a difficult question, maybe if we pray hard to put a character in Tales of Smash Bros., then it will happen! * Laughs * Anyway Higuchi-san really wants, but that will depend Sakurai-san. But for now, it is too early to tell.
Kot : I do not know if you know, but the Fire Emblem series has been published in the West and has become popular precisely because there were Marth and Roy in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Have one or more characters of Tales is surely a good way to promote the series.
Y : It's true. But we must also keep in mind that for a character to appear in Smash Bros. game, this character must come from a game released on a Nintendo. This is a prerequisite and all characters in the series does not meet. We could of course consider the characters in Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss, Lloyd, for example.

I guess I'm the only one who prefers Luke over Lloyd :/
I want to see Luke as well as Lloyd...and even though it never came out here, only on the Wii in Japan...why not Asbel? Not the first time characters appeared on Smash Bros that was only seen on a Japan Nintendo system.
I dunno about her. Lloyd sure, but not so much Colette. I'd feel better with just one playable rep. =P
And really, like in the interview, adding in someone from Tales would be no different than adding someone from Fire Emblem.
And yes, I'd be fine with more Nintendo reps everywhere and them keeping 3rd parties to a minimum of 3 characters only. (MAYBE 4.)
I dunno... Considering the time frame of the sequel, I thought the VA was just fine.
No kidding, I had no idea I was reading a translation. Google Translate's getting frighteningly good.
I'm gonna miss Sonic and Snake. Bring in the cool ones!
LLOYD please. Kratos assist trophy... lol
If there's only going to be one Smash game for the WiiU (as they have done in the past), then they should go all out... Put in as many characters as possible.
Dude, screw Namco.
I am actually intrigued by the fact it seems that, despite Namco-Bandai working on it, they aren't really involved with what characters are included. I'm sure Sakurai will include someone from them, but they don't seem to be pushing Tekken or Tales.
Which is good, because those series don't really belong. SSB is more about mascot-y characters for series. Namco has more relevant and more fitting characters and series (like Pacman, Klonoa, or even The Prince).
At the end of the day, I don't really care who is in the game, but I wouldn't want a Tales/Tekken character taking up a spot if we aren't expanding the roster really. Or in place of other franchises they have.
@someone17
Yes.
But why would you want SSB to be just Nintendo?
Really, it should have all classic series characters.
Mario, Pacman, Sonic, Megaman, Simon Belmont, etc. In a perfect world, it'd just be a clustercuss of NES heroes (and then Sonic) from across as many companies as possible.
Don't abuse your luck, Namco Bandai! As much as I want to see Pac-Man or Klonoa joining the fray, don't whore the hell out of your characters in Smash Bros. Or else
Llyod, Luke, Asbel, one of the two heroes from the Tales of DS games. You have SNES? choices as well. So you have like 6-7 Tales MCs you can choose from.
I think Namco-Bandai deserves at least one character in. Not sure which one, though~
Please don't.
Tales isn't anywhere near important enough or iconic enough to gaming. If we're going to get Namco or any more third party characters, they need to be the biggest names that exist. Pac-Man is pretty much it as far as Namco goes.
I hope Sakurai keeps his standards.
Lloyd or Kratos would be fun to use. Kratos moreso if Cam Clarke's voicing him. =P
The only character from Namco Bandai that should be considered is Pac-Man. He is easily the most recognizable character to have never appeared in smash bros.
I am especially in favor of this, since the only "important" Nintendo characters not in Brawl were a few obvious characters (Mewtwo, K. Rool, and Ridley status characters), a few great retro character choices, and a up and comer or two (Shulk?). We're running out of Nintendo characters that make people want to play Smash Bros. Quite frankly, D-grade stars like Waluigi, Funky Kong, and
Despite this, we could get Lloyd Irving or a few Tekken characters as non playable characters. I would be in favor of such a scenario happening, since Tekken has some pretty cool characters (and is the best-selling fighting game franchise), and Lloyd seems to be a Nintendo fan favorite.
You know they posted an English Translation of this anyway. You just need to look a little ways down right before the comments or ya know do some actual work.
I think it is time for Nintendo to make Smash Bros into Nintendo & gaming All Stars battle.
This will make Smash appeal beyond Nintendo fans and "casuals".
Better yet, a new franchise "All Gaming Stars" that features every character of every game in the whole world.
...Nope.
Too bad a lot of your tales game SUCK.
@MoldyClay
well to be honest I'm not exactly against 3rd parties in smash (as I really did enjoy sonic and snake) as long as its kept to a minimum. I just dont want anything from that god awful rpg on gamecube
So...Lloyd or Sheena then. They're the 2 most prominent names from Tales games on Nintendo systems. I'd rather have Sheena since it'd be more awesome.
If they were to add a Namco character from an rpg in the next Smash Bros games, they might as well add KOSMOS as a playable character.
Well,a character who can fight with her fists,a blade,a scynthe,an arm cannon, dual machine guns and giants blasts from her chest is WAY MORE AWESOME than a guy with two swords.Pit can use his bow as a dual blade and with the lightsaber, swords characters can do the dual sword thing already.
*insert brofist here*
I would love to see some Tales of Characters in there.
