Platinum Games labels Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale a rip-off

Coming from Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya...

Well, that's some pretty strong words from Kamiya. I'll reserve judgment for the final game's release. Thanks to Sylverstone for the heads up!

How is the opinion of a single developer, written in his own personal twitter account, somehow reflecting the point of view of an entire game company?

This is terrible reporting.

Yeah, this is bad business on this person's end, because this person represents their company (Platinum Games, a 3rd party company), and that sours their relationship with Sony.

If it was Nintendo or Microsoft or some non-3rd party company doing this, I would be lol'ing.

Still, I don't really care that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (which is an obnoxious, stupid, and long title) is a rip-off of Smash Bros. and Marvel vs. Capcom (which it totally is) so long as the game is good. And quite frankly, the game looks like it has no (original) direction, nothing entertaining about it (it is boring to watch), and like it has minimal budget, so it certainly is appearing to be total garbage.

Like Cartoon Network Punch garbage, except more caught in between being a smash clone and Marvel vs. Capcom as its' entire identity. It's kinda like a deer in the headlights that is torn between running off the road to the left or running off the road to the right. PSASBR (even the abbreviation is long!) is gonna get hit right in the middle of those two, and its' gonna be ugly.

Oh, and the scoring system/game mode (at least the one shown) is freaking stupid. Like Smash Bros. coin mode stupid. I didn't think anything could be that stupid.

A ripoff of Marvel vs Capcom? Whaaaaaaat? No it isn't. You mean because it has super meters? Because that's really stupid if that's what you mean. I guess it's also a pong ripoff because it keeps score?

I mean, visually, it looks a lot like Smash Bros... but gameplay wise, it's nothing like Smash Bros.

Except:
-4 player simultaneous play
-2D stages with platforms over a main stage that you can jump through
-Characters fly off diagonally after being hit by a special attack similar to how characters fly after being hit by a smash attack
-background and foreground hazards/characters that can effect gameplay
-double jumps/floaty jump mechanics
-after flying off after being hit with an attack you can cancel out with a jump
-you can roll out of the way after being knocked down
-spawning items
-not showing how many kills/deaths you have

That's all just stuff I've noticed from gameplay videos. Besides a few tweaks, like super moves/the only way to win being killing someone with a super move, they've obviously attempted to make it feel close to the experience you'd get from Smash Bros. as well as visually be similar.

This isn't just Sony's take on a 4 player 2D fighter, this is Sony's take on Smash Bros. The similarities are more than skin deep.

My main problem is not the game's existence, but how the execs pretend that specifically SONY is doing something original and never seen before.
If only the scoring mechanics were a little bit more like the Shonen Jump games or TMNT: Smash-Up!

Anyway, it isn't NEARLY as shameless as LittleBigPlanet Karting. It's quite different at it's core, as others are pointing out. LBPK on the other hand...

LMAO, never heard of that game, and yet, it's so similar to Mario Kart.

And btw, when English's not your main language, Karting sounds kinda stupid.

I remember when TMNT Smash-up gathered this much hate and petty bullshit for being a Smash Bros. clone (God, it even has Smash on the title)... Oh, wait, it didn't... Me thinks, it might have something to do with All-Stars being a Sony exclusive.

Crossover fighting games.
Nintendo apparently holds the patent.

I don't think it's hate. I am very willing tomplay the game! It's just an obvious (and shameless) rip-off! And it's kinda sad to see a company as Sony to such a thing. I love Sony, don't get me wrong! BUt this was just low!

I might get it if it works out since I love Smash Bros. If it works good of course.

I want to know what Sakurai thinks of this game more than anything...

Me, I think it tries too hard to be an "edgier" version of Smash, what with the focus on Super Spamming.

But hey, this game has its own crowd. Let 'em have their fun, I say.

As far as I'm concerned, the hate TMNT: Smash -Up! got wasn' because of being a Smash Bros. rip-off, it was hated because Ubisoft didn't make its original intention (being an anniversary celebration of TMNT), focusing more on the 2007 movie, and including Rabbids that took up spots of the roster.

I guess Nintendo just gets a pass for completely ripping off Pac-Man Vs for their Nintendoland game

Same here. Definitely keeping my eye on it.

I thought X-men Vs. Street Fighter or King of Fighters started that trend.

Exactly!.. This game is being hated for being similar to Smash Bros.. Games receiving hate for sharing elements with other games, at this point.. Can it get more stupid than this?

TMNT Smash Up sucked.

Also, the game was being made by some Brawl devs, so it was expected to be a take on Smash Bros.

Even with all the negative opinions I think that game could be a good way to introduce several Sony characters some players don't know.

TMNT Smash Up was a boring game, and it really showed us how talented Game Arts was at making fighting games without Masahiro Sakurai and Monolith Soft. Really, if the game was good, even with its' God awful roster, I wouldn't mind. But the fact the game was boring, unmemorable, not fun (where as smash bros is naturally fun), and felt like it was a cheap version of smash.

So far, that's what PlayStation All-Stars sounds like, looks like, and plays like (according to people I know who have played it), which is disappointing. I love some of those Sony IPs (Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, God of War, LittleBigPlanet, etc), and I would love a great crossover of those series in whatever genre.

At the EVO 2012 panel they tried to sell the game as one that is very like Marvel vs. Capcom, and the extreme usage of super moves is evidence of that.

Really, your "if this, then this" response makes no sense. That and you shouldn't jump to conclusions, but ask questions.
User avatar

@Johnknight1
They can try to sell the game all they want. It's nothing like Marvel vs Capcom. And my conclusion was correct, that's what you seem to be talking about. If super moves being used makes it like MvC, then a score meter being used makes it a lot like pong. In other words, the two are nothing like each other.

Rip-off or not. It still doesn't have any interesting characters.

Based on th E3 footage that I saw it was a clunky, boxy version of Smash Bros. Maybe people that haven't played the glorious Smash Bros. games will like it because they won't know what they're missing, though
User avatar
06 Aug 2012 14:16

@NightsOwl
The people making the game flat out stated they are taking or using concepts of MvC. MvC is extremely reliant on super moves; that's where most of the damage comes from. With PSASBR, that's where you get kills from. It's not exactly alike, but there is some similarities there.

@NightsOwl
Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Kratos, Dante, Sweet Tooth, Big Daddy, and Nathan Drake are pretty interesting characters.

The biggest problem with the game is that it looks boring, awkward, and uninspired. From what I heard, what I've seen is how the game probably is.

Burned.

I think it would be hilarious if the developers of PSASBR respond to this.

A very outspoken guy, but the headline shouldn't have Platinum Games on it. It's his opinion, not the company's.
