On controls...
"The GameCube controller is not the only way to control Smash Bros., so we will look into ways that fits the Wii U."
On game mechanics...
"The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play."
On cameos...
"I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic. It made many fans happy, and it broadened the Smash Bros arena. However, introducing more non-Nintendo characters willy-nilly will lose the focus of the game, so I also recognise the need to narrow it down."

I spy with my little eye someone with their pants in a twist.
'Especially' Tales? That's quite the hate-boner. I'd prefer Tales to Tekken/Soul Calibur/anything else Namco could offer aside from Pac-Man.
Sounds like "Probably gonna have some cameo guys, but we're not gonna spam the roster with non-Nintendo guys". Sounds good.
Wii U allows for:
- WiiU Pro Controller
- Wii Remote (NES)
- Wii Remote+Nunchuk
- Wii U GamePad
Sounds like the same amount as Brawl and works for me. Probably use Pro or the GamePad depending.
3DS could just use a standard control.
Circle Pad - Move
D-Pad - Taunts
L/R - Shield (+A - Grab) or they could have L be shield and R be grab
A - Smash Attacks
B - Special Attacks
X/Y - Jump
Seems simple enough.
@OprahFTWinfrey
For some reason I think he just means that the gameplay is basically the same as Brawl, but they aren't just going to add features that don't need to be there just because of the system (3D or Gamepad nonsense).
@warbearer
I'd be fine with Nightmare. Yoshimitsu is also good because he represents Tekken AND SoulCalibur, eliminating both with one guy.
@LegendofSantiago
I really didn't feel like Snake didn't belong.
We had 2 games on NES (one non-canon), a GBC game, a Gamecube remake, DreamMix Fighters or whatever on Gamecube had him and New International Track & Field had him on DS (which was out the same year as SSBB).
Sure, he's more prominent on Sony and associated with them, but it wasn't THAT weird to me. Then again, I also played all the games at that point and blur my gaming instead of "Oh, this isn't Nintendo enough".
@Iridium077
As huge and popular as Tales is, the characters are not specifically iconic enough except for maybe Lloyd and I honestly don't want him over other characters. There are also tons of one-off characters. It just doesn't make sense.
And you'd honestly prefer characters that don't represent any series well enough over characters like Klonoa, The Prince (Katamari), Mr. Driller or something like that (not sure if KOS-MOS or Dig Dug are a good idea or not)?
Honestly, this is the perfect time for Baten Kaitos to enter Super Smash Bros., since we have Nintendo and Namco here in case there's some beef with who actually owns the rights (Monolith or Namco themselves).
Mega Man is the only big name 3rd that I want to see. The rest should be Nintendo characters.
I don't particularly like any of the Tales characters, and don't think too highly of the Tales series myself. Chalk it up to my dislike of Tales of Symphonia, and utter hatred of Symphonia 2.
Pac-Man has the iconic status going for him and fits better as a Namco representative than anyone else.
EDIT: I'd also point out that Pac-Man has already crossed over with the Mario series before with the 2 arcade Mario Karts.
@Iridium077
its quite easy really, there are just so many more iconic and recognizable series to take cameos from than tales, and you could argue that just among namco, let alone 3rd parties in general.
Why aren't there any Wishlists yet?!
Anyways. I'd be happy with maybe 4 third party characters. Sonic, Snake, Megaman, and some NamcoBandai character. Or even, remove Snake, and have two NamcoBandai chars~
All they would need is maybe one other guest character. Mega Man is most likely the best fit, Lloyd being a maybe.
I think Tales would just not that iconic enough either. When you think of it, there is a vast vast vast ocean of Tales characters that come into play for that type of role. Sure it's narrowed a bit being Nintendo consoles they'd have to be on. Still, that's a lot of characters many different people would prefer over another in the Tales series. Of course Lloyd may be the biggest name from the Nintendo Tales, but even still the name is harder to pitch than, say, Pac-Man, Yoshimitsu and even Heihachi.
Though remaining on topic, it's good to see Sakurai say he is not going to throw in more cameos willy-nilly, and they hard on considering bringing the older cameos back (it's what I got from it when I read it). I think there is Nintendo characters that can replace both Sonic and Snake with minimal alterations (though I think Sonic would return, he can be replaced with Dillon and Snake probably from someone in the Advance Wars series).
Personally, I would not ever want to see the cameo limit exceed 3 characters. more than that just seems like overkill to me. And lets nots even start with the magical wishlists of 50+ characters and about 20 of them are cameos, 10 may be from anime back when Sonic was announced in Brawl. That was a headache and a half during my trips online.
Nintendo should totally make a special GameCube controller for Wii U that functions like a Pro controller but looks like GameCube.
I hope Sonic and Snake return. They were pretty cool. Pac Man just has to be in. I'd say if any Tales character joins in, it's gotta be Lloyd. He resonates more with Nintendo fans.
One of the best things withs brawl was having Snake fighting Pikachu...And then for example Mario and Link would join in. I find that te be awesome!
*Pika, Pikaaa...."
Mega Man should be a given. I wouldn't mind Pikachu taking on a Tekken character either. Would be so awesome
Sonic and Snake are very welcome to stay!!!!
Bomberman, Pacman or even Megaman deserved to be in Brawl far more than Snake.
If Snake shows up again, his hit box needs to be fixed. No way his ftilt reaches farther than Ness' and even Sexy Suit Samus' ftilt-kick.
Hopefully that means that Sonic and Snake will be on the next one too.
I personally would love to see tales characters in smash.(Really any of the playable character and the main villans would be fine with me,though if i HAD to pick one it would either Dhaos or Kratos)
It would be cool if they brought back the Pictochat stage but made it so whoever has the gamepad could actually effect it in real-time. It would be gimmicky and pointless for real fights but it would still be a cool feature.
Which makes sense, considering Brawl only used motion for one thing and it was off by default (unless you registered a name and selected it to have it on by default for that name only).
For some reason that sounded way too logical not to do! Nice..No.. GREAT point!
I would think that the Wii U is also still compatible with both Classic Controllers.
We're gonna get a ton of ways to play with all the WiiU controllers (plus Wii Controllers). I think that the 3DS might actually be a control scheme for WiiU Smash Bros. game.
I also think Nintendo (or some 3rd party developer) is going to create a GameCube a chance at being playable. It would be cool to controller plug (USB? we already have those) so you can use the GameCube controller on the WiiU.
As for Namco Bandai characters, the only one with a chance at being playable in Pac-Man (and his chances are high). There is a chance that we do see some Tales characters make cameos, however. That would be a nice touch.
boooo...although i was hoping they'd do something a little more drastic with the gameplay...like 3d....hopefully they are able to implement mechanics that will make this game better than it has ever been.
but i am disappointed....sounds like he isnt looking to change much....and just wants like a new mechanic or two to make it feel fresh. This is probably amazing news to some the purists out there. But the game is starting to feel stale to me, and i was hoping for somethiing fresh and exciting.

Im hoping they draw some inspiration from Jump ultimate stars in terms of hitstuns, physics, and the re imagination of the characters movesets so that they function in such a way that could allow more combo play.
maybe a system in which the percentages gained during the fight dont cause more and more knockback unless its with a smash attack or certain special attacks. so only being hit by a smash attack or certain specials with knockback properties are influenced by your percentages. the rest of the attacks would have a set knockback and stun properties. Maybe air smashes which are just stronger versions of the regular air directional attacks..but need to be charged a bit to access that extra knockback power.
this would open things up for more combos.....doesnt require a change in controls..and makes finishes much more intentional.
Its unfortunate the wiiupad wont really be sold seperately, and will probably be expensive....because it would have been nice to have a mode or system in place where each player could have either an item or assist trophy load out.
so you start every match with a couple assist trophies or other items for use whenever you want throughout the match. Could allow another level of depth and strategy if it were properly implemented. and you just tap the item you want to use...some would be good for finishing someone off...others could be used to extend your combos
sonic , megaman and well pacman if they have to , that's all i want . That and another subspace emissary mode . It doesn't really matter how many characters , namco will be sure to add more in their following game totally not a clone of smash bros multiplatform not on wii u. The same way game arts did it with ubisoft , i don't see namco avoiding that free money and wonderful undeserved praises
Even though I'm a huge Tales fan and a Lloyd fan, the only Namco character I want to see playable is Pacman.
I want to see Bomberman.
I'll like to see some changes from Brawl to this version on the gameplay department.
First of all, change the game physics to something between Melee and Brawl. Also, eliminate the tripping (it is just to annoying).
Second, keep Brawl graphic and music style. They were just too great!
Third, include newer Nintendo characters (from series like Golden Sun, Sin & Punishment, and any other) and 2 new third party (Mega Man and someone from Namco, like Dig Dug or Pac Man).
That would make any Smash Bros fan happy with the new entry.
Hmm, I understand where he's coming from on Cameo's however I still do want to see Megaman.
I'm glad they are not going to go over board with 3rd part characters. Mega Man and Pac Man are definitely welcome as well as a few others, but let us not over do it. I'm hoping for 50 characters this time around with vastly improved online play. Don't really care about the story too much, but more stage customization options would be nice.
