3DS was doomed, why isn't Vita?

A commenter over at Kotaku has gotten one of his thoughts published in the site's 'Speak Up' feature. This particular poster is wondering why there hasn't been a rash of 'Vita is Doomed!' articles coming from the major gaming outlets. He looks back to the early days of the 3DS, which was being hit with '3DS is Doomed!' articles at the same point in its life that the Vita is at now. Even worse, the 3DS had sold 4.5 million by that point, which far outweighs the amount of Vitas sold thus far.

I've been wondering the same thing. It just goes to show that a large section of the gaming press is more than willing to follow along with the 'Nintendo is Doomed!' chants, but they dare not voice that same opinion over Sony or Microsoft, no matter what the evidence. I'm not saying all outlets are like this, but it does seem like a good amount. If I brought this point up on my own, I would have been labeled a Nintendo fanboy. I'm glad someone else spoke out about it.

By the way, I don't think Sony or the Vita is doomed. I do think they're having a rough go of things, but they can certainly turn the Vita around.

The Vita is like the Sega Saturn and the 3ds is like the Nintendo 64 and the mobile games are like the Playstation.

Mobile games are the big mainstream stuffs,Nintendo lost their dominances in the handhelds market so everyone assumed their doomed yet they have fantastic games that you wont find anywhere else from them and their supporters and the Vita made some mistakes and is lagging through the very hardcore Sony fans and shooters fans are enjoying it through it probably wont be around in like 3-4 years.

There,a parallel with the 32-64 bit generation.

Number one, there WAS an influx of Vita is doomed articles for a while. People pretend there wasn't and I laugh at them because they aren't paying any attention to non-Nintendo websites, apparently. Not as many as with 3DS, sure, but part of that is because it's just generally accepted now that this thing has pretty much flopped.

Even Kotaku themselves have posted at least 6 articles that have the kind of tone that Nintendo fans would have interpreted as 'u sayin our product is doomed!1'

If you don't think there's a persistent anti-Nintendo stance in the industry, you are not paying attention.

My thoughts exactly!

Huh? Nintendo's still number 1 in the handheld market and 3DS is selling even better then what the DS did at the same period. Please, don't even dare to compare handhelds and smartphones.

MrThee wrote:i still see some news outlets speaking ill of the Vita's future (gametrailers, screwattack). Most likely folks aren't bashing it as much because they saw how the 3DS rebounded after it's holiday.

But I think the real reason we saw several articles spelling the gloom and doom of the 3DS is NOT because every other outlet on the internet likes to HATE nintendo, but because they like to REPORT on Nintendo. Nintendo has always been a huge player in structuring they way the industry operates, far more than Sony and Microsoft. Yes, Sony helped push optical media and Microsoft pushed the idea of the home entertainment box and better online infrastructure. However, everyone knows that Nintendo's been in the business the longest, and when gamers become hungry for new, compelling experiences that they'd never thought they'd enjoy, they expect them to come from Nintendo more than anyone else.

For a long time, Nintendo has always been in the center of the consumer's eye, and because of this, the company remains the most intriguing entity for journalists to analyze and scrutinize.

So, I think that the reason you're seeing no "The Vita is DOOOMMED" articles is because, well, consumers and readers really don't care as much for the Vita as the 3DS. Also consider that some of those outlets who put out the "3DS is teh sux" articles made have written those articles because they WANTED to see Nintendo so better. And they did. I'm starting to believe that most consumers, readers, and journalists don't care much for the Vita's success.

While I still think there is a serious amount of anti-Nintendo sentiment that journalists Iike to push forward for website hits, this was a very well constructed post and is a good point of view. Good stuff, man.

No, there has been hardly any, other than reciting sales figures (I was watching to try and gauge when the price cut would come)

I remember about 2 or 3 Vita doomed articles a few months ago...but then they vanished, which is ironic because it's clear now more than ever that Vita is struggling. Alternatively, we are still getting Nintendoomed articles (though the focus has shifted from 3DS to Wii U). Never thought I'd see someone in Kotaku's community ask a good question...

...unfortunately, I scrolled down and was met with the "Microsh*t" post and was reminded why that community is such a damn cesspool.

Sorry, but I've read articles and heard plenty of commenters talking about how Vita is doomed. The big reason we saw more 3DS is doomed articles on this site is because it's a Nintendo site. RMC actively seeks out anything to do with Nintendo, positive or negative. The only time we'll see Vita stuff here is if someone's directly comparing it to the 3DS.

It's already been posted in this thread, but for those who missed it, here is a list of articles from Kotaku alone talking about how "Vita is doomed". As for IGN, just a look on the front page finds this from less than a week ago starting "There’s no denying PlayStation Vita’s struggles" from a member of IGN's Sony team, and here's another about Sony generally losing money.

Well, it doesn't help that Pachter keeps talking aout 3DS still flopping, and that Vita does amazing.

Same reason no one has ever expressed any doubt that the PS4/720 could fail - the industry is bias against Nintendo [who plays by it's own rules, not theirs].

... Though their love for Mario and Zelda are continual exceptions to that. If those IPs went, then I have no doubt they wouldn't care for Nintendo games an ounce.

Let's see how things are after Christmas

I'm waiting until after Christmas to be able to tell how Vita is doing. I am very curious to see how things are after the point where the 3DS changed it's fortunes. Will Vita do the same or will it be different and continue to do poorly. That is the question that I want to see answered.

Because nobody really took the Vita seriously. Everybody knew it was a POS. To this day nobody takes the PSP seriously. It sold well in Japan, and some people played it, but it's not a phenomenon like the Gameboys or the DS. Nintendo is just so much bigger and more reputable and better in handheld gaming.

Obviously people who don't step out of this site aren't going to see any "Vita is doomed" articles... That doesn't mean that there aren't.

No, none of the kotaku articles say that vita is doomed, they state plain facts that they cant argue against anymore, and how to solve them. Most 3ds DOOM big articles from the press, focused on it having no chance against iphones and what not, when NOT A SINGLE phone related product is mentioned in the kotaku GO VITA DONT GIVE UP articles you shown. The diference in the tone , condescending and hopeful is shameful when compared to the downright belitling 3ds ones.

And NO Vita sales wont pick in the same meaningful way 3ds -No big time titles(Mario big imean), no price cut. It will see a small xmass boost as all products and maybe will get a more significant oomph next year with the obvious price cut.

Vita is doomed to be financially unsuccessful (for at least the rest of the year) because it's game library is crap. The 3DS has a much better library, a much better interface, and the games don't appear to just be cheaper versions of Wii/WiiU games (like the Vita, and to an extent the PSP, were perceived to be).

That and the Vita has no "large titles" coming out for the remainder of the year, except for games that you can buy on other consoles (with higher quality) and an Assassin's Creed title (which if it's good, may be the console's short-term saving grace).

Other than that Assassin's Creed, again, there is no "major" Vita title coming out this year (or that have been announced) that isn't getting a better version on another console. Meanwhile, on the 3DS, you got NEW Super Mario Bros. 2 (which came out recently) and Castlevania coming out this year, and Animal Crossing and Smash 3DS (which will be different from Super Smash Bros. WiiU) coming out in the next few years.

The only thing that could save the Vita in the immediate future is LittleBigPlanet (which helped the PSP considerably), another (but more polished) Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo, or some huge third party game.

Its pretty obvious to me. Nintendo are the last of the old guard. SNK? Software only. SEGA? Same. NEC? God knows. Atari? Divided up, in name only company uses there name.

Nintendo are the last console manufacture from that day left. For some reason, people hate that fact. They want Nintendo to be gone.

So, yeah. Thats why, or at least it is to me.

Probably already said, but this has happened with pretty much every single Nintendo system made since the N64 and is continuing to happen with the Wii-U. I don't get why people feel the need to hate them so much, but it will be a sad, sad day in gaming if Nintendo ever does end up doomed.

There is a negative bias towards Nintendo in the industry and anyone that says there isn't is either blind, a n00b to the industry, or holds that bias themselves.

Honestly, I really think you just notice the 3DS ones more, and being a Nintendo fan you take criticism of the system to heart. The Vita is getting a ton of flak all over the industry, but it'll never make up for that time when the 3DS was selling poorly and had a software drought and people dared to point it out.
