Check with your GameStop before trading in your 3DS for a 3DS XL

It seems that GameStop locations are going to vary with their treatment of the 3DS to 3DS XL trade-ins. As I've said, my local store said a $100 trade-in deal is on the way. They also told me that customers can do system transfers, so long as the store isn't too busy.

Unfortunately, we've been hearing that some locations aren't going to allow for the system transfers. That's going to be quite a dealbreaker for some consumers. Just give your local store a call and see what the situation is before you plop down your cash. Thanks to Jeff for the heads up!

I heard that as long as the gamestop has wifi you should be able to transfer your data. At least that's what i was told

Maybe in different countries, but in USA all Gamestops should have that 100 dollar trade in for 3DS systems. (assuming the system is in working condition) I don't know of a single promotion (like this one) that hasn't been universal to all stores.

Also, no Gamestop that I know of has Wifi (none in my area do). If Gamestops have WiFi they are bumming it off of a store next to them. The majority of stores won't be able to do a system transfer.

My GameStop just told me that there were no deals for upgrading and they won't get a new "media pack" (or something like that) until the 25th or 26th so there won't be anything changing until at least then.

He told me $50 is the 3DS trade in value right now, with a promo for an extra $25 on hardware, it brings it to $75.

It's frustrating getting different info from different sources. I just don't know what's going on...

One of the 3 gamestop's by me said I could buy it at full price, do the system transfer wherever I can find wifi, then come back with my regular 3ds and trade it in (as long as I paid in cash) get back $100 in cash. Any other payment would be store credit. Hope this helps.

The person you spoke with is misinformed, I guarantee it. Just in case, though, I'll research this tomorrow, and I'll let you know if I was wrong in this thread. Their marketing book does currently only show that there is a $25 extra bump for the 3DS, but either also through the marketing book or store informers (I don't recall) it has been revealed to all Gamestops that there is this promotion going on. The bump ups are not mutually exclusive to 3DS. 3DS towards the 3DS XL gets you 100 which is the most and the other DS' will trade in for more when put in towards the XL as well (I don't remember how much).

So here's the possible outcome. 1) I'm wrong, and no Gamestops will be doing this promotion (unlikely) OR 2) The Gamestop employee is completely misinformed.

(EDIT: This is restating what gary71313 said lol) Here's my suggestion if I'm right (and you have extra cash to spare upfront). Tell the gamestop employee that you want to do the 100 promotion (again assuming I'm right), but you do not want to lose your data on the 3DS. Tell, said associate that you are willing to purchase the 3DS if, and only if, you can return later (with your receipt) to trade your 3DS and get that promotion. Say this without being rude to them, and literally no employee could possibly say no to that. I know that it would mean that you have to put more money up front, but if they agree to said arrangement they would refund that money back to you. (To people curious, how an employee would do this when you come back... They would return your 3DS and then re ring it up while trading in your 3DS. I don't see anywhere that could possibly be a problem to get your money back, if this is agreed on upfront. Worst case scenario, and I stress the word worse,, they say "It will only let me give it to you in store credit". You then politely say, "Ok, then let's cancel this transaction, you refund the whole amount of the XL to me, and I rebuy it while trading in the 3DS" and then you will be on your merry way.)

Again, I'll do research tomorrow on the subject and get back to everyone here.

Thanks man. I look forward to what you find out. Crazy thing is that it was the manager I talked to, so finding out they were wrong would make me have zero faith in their store as a whole.

One more question: Can I get the promo price on trading in both a 3DS and DSi? Or is just one system per transaction elegible for the promo?

(Note: this is being sent from my phone, I'll try my best to not have this contain any typos)

One thing real quick. This is only for citizens of the USA. I have no idea what other areas are doing.

GameStop's are indeed doing the promotion previously mentioned. To go into specifics the trade in deal is as follows:

DS lite: $40
DSi: $50
DSi XL: $60
3DS: $100
(all values are only if put towards the price of the 3DS XL)

The information is easily missable, I wouldn't question the competence of the store manager based off of her being misinformed. GameStop should have had it in their marketing book, but it was not. All stores should have the marketing material for this promotion up by today (because they should have received it by today). Said marketing is a pop on sticker for the 3DS XL display boxes that say "Save up to $100" on them.

Again, this promotion is for all GameStop's in the US. If anyone would like to take advantage of the promotion, but still keep their content, please refer to my last post.

@Broken_Cartridge
Thanks for the info. I'll give them a call and see if they are on the same page as every other GS in the country yet.
