If not for the terrible Labyrinth Zone, I'd prefer this one over the actual Sonic 1.
Stronger platforming, and the inability to pick your rings up makes it all less hand holdy than the other games.
As far as I know, this is the only Sonic game with a Mario Style Auto Scroll level too.
And the Boss levels being in seperate acts, giving you no rings and only one hidden extra life, really keeps you on your toes.
If ever there was an under rated Sonic Game, I'd call it this.
My all time favorite game. Every year at Gamescom, I go to the retro gaming area, sit at the Master System, and make a "speedrun". Not as speedy as I'd like, as I'm not that nerdy, but yesterday, I only lost one live (after losing several continues last year, that was great for me) in 45 minutes. Let's call it a normal playthrough, not speed run^^ .
I love that game.
