Damnit, the beginning of the week sucks! How did we move past the weekend already? I hope you guys had a good, calm and relaxing Monday. I'm not even sure such a thing is possible. No matter what, let's just keep pushing for the weekend! See you in a few, short hours.
The day has finally come! Now the entire world can enjoy both the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2. Some might say that it's the perfect combination for Nintendo fans! Especially those that love to take their gaming on the go. Hopefully you spent the last half of your weekend enjoying one or both of these Nintendo goodies.
If you did happen to pick up New Super Mario Bros. 2, be it download or retail, I'm figuring you spent quite a bit of time with it. For those of you that are heading back to school, the squeeze is on! You only have a few more days to get all your gaming bliss in before it's back to homework and all those damn responsibilities.
So, with a lot of time poured into the game thus far, I really want to hear what you have to say about it. Is it everything you thought it would be? Are you finding yourself a little bit disappointed in the final product? Do you think the game is being judged harshly by critics, or have reviews not been harsh enough?
Leave a comment and let us know. Hopefully you found the purchase worth your time and money!

Im having a great time. With the exception of the lava flurries, i agree the 3d is by far the worst ive seen so far. Kind of disappointed that the music is 100% recycled. Its a lot of fun but it does feel like a quick, rush job. Its also really easy. I do like the new gold flower and im enjoying the flood of coind much more then i was anticipating! So far i give the game an 8!
love the game so far, only on world 2 and trying to get everything first. I really like the 3d in the game! I think they did the blurring to lessen eye strain so you are not focusing on too many planes at once......I also think it has some of the best mario art so far, Love it!!
I'm genuinely enjoying what this game has to offer, despite its design feeling uninspired and suited more for the DS versus the 3DS. It's not the greatest Mario out there, but I truly believe it outclasses Super Mario 3D Land, and while I'm not giddy like I was while playing through Super Mario Galaxy or its sequel, I'm certainly still inclined to keep going.
I do wish you could play as Luigi before beating the game. I don't understand why Nintendo feels Luigi should be a reward versus giving fans the option right from the start.. I feel like the game itself should offer more rewards for accomplishing its various tasks (c'mon a new title screen for collecting a million coins? Really?), but I suppose I can level with Japanese developers' take on "the journey is the reward". It's worth the price of admission at least--a B+ or even A- Mario game.
One of my favorite things about this game is the level design. I absolutely love it, and I think it beats the other two games in that sense. The graphics in general are pretty crisp and clear too.
This wouldn't be my favorite game, but it sure is enjoyable. Coin Rush mode is addicting too, as well as speedrunning normal levels.
Oh, and the secret exits and Star Coins were a challenge to find. I really liked that.
I'm broke, give me monies. >:U Neh, I'm sure it's a good romp and stomp kinda game, and I'd sure like to have it. I'm kinda reserving some last bits of money for anticipated eShop/VC games, though.
Haven't played very much of it yet. I just beat the first world, but haven't gotten every coin or the secret exit yet. The way I play is I try to get everything on my first playthrough. But if I miss stuff, then I just continue on to beat the game, then go back afterwards to get everything. Sure, it's not the most inspiring as far level design goes. But it's good ole fashioned Mario platforming. As far as the 3D. I really don't use it at all in general. It's pretty cool, but I bought the system for games, not the 3D. So I haven't even tried it on this game yet lol.
It looked stale to me. I played through it all, and I mean played all the levels, and now I'm looking for all the star coins. Anyways, most of the levels are uninspired, there's nothing new if you exclude the coins mechanic that could have been the thing but doesn't add anything as is. It's a good mario nonetheless, but it could have been much more with little more effort, and they were just lazy this time. I would give it an 8 though.
enjoying both! every time i open my new xl i marvel at the beauty! nsmb 2 is exactly what i expect. solid and fun platforming.. the 3d blur effect is a little bizzare to me but i found if you play with it at half way its actually a nice little touch. i had no idea how obsessed i would get with collecting coins. it makes the typical returning to an old stage to grab a star coin you missed/to find hidden route routine kind of addictive. i really am enjoying the hell out of both the game and system right now.
It's generic, recycled and lazy presentation-wise, but dammit, its still as fun as Mario's ever been. The focus on coins really holds things together, just as I'd hoped it would. Coin Rush is a brilliant addition, and is practically fanservice for a member of a major StreetPass group like me. Overall, I'd give it an 8.5/10 for the 1/3rd of the game I've played through thusfar. I just hope Nintendo comes to realize the danger of stagnation and starts using original asset/levels/etc in the future.
And am I the only one experiening a buttload of lag in co-op mode?
I got it from the eShop. It's fun but nothing amazing. The level design is pretty basic and the coin collecting doesn't seem to have much of a point aside from racking up extra lives for users that need them. I'm not a completionist so I'm already at world 6 - I'm not excited about replaying levels to get all the star coins, etc. I wish there were more like 12 worlds to go through. I don't have a problem with the subtle 3D but they certainly could've turned up the depth a little.
Still holding off on the XL until I either feel like I have the cash to blow or some of the forthcoming/delayed titles I'm waiting for finally show up.
Over all, I really enjoy the title!
I have only a few complaints and they're already been stated here for the most part.
Recycled music, I wouldn't mind this so much if it was actually good and diverse. It really bugs me playing a snow level with the NSMB theme playing, they couldn't re-do it with a wintery beat or something?
Also, I hate how all of the Tower bosses are exactly the same, admitedly by world 6 it was a challenge, but I would have liked more diverse enemies. Throw in a Boom Boom or something!
Also as for bosses, the final boss and Koopalings were WAY too easy. They weren't extremely challenging in the Wii version by any means, but they were still decent battles. I never died in any of the bosses, however in the Wii version I remember dying quite a few times at Ludwig.
And finally, the 3D blurring the background, some of the backgrounds, like the lava levels look really nice! But I also like the 3D effect, so its a shame that it blurs it out. Although the weaker the 3D effect the less its blurred, I'm sure I could make some compromise.
So all in all, the cons FOR ME, aren't deal breakers, and the game itself is solid. It doesn't do anything new, which is ironic, but I'm alright with that. 3D Land was a nice twist on things and I cannot wait for the next 3D Mario title for the Wii U.
I'm having a lot of fun with it despite the lack of interest leading up to the release. I'd say it's a way better game than Mario 3D Land. Now I can't wait for New Super Mario Bros. U.
Collecting coins is also very addicting even with a worthless prize.
NOPE!
I'm enjoying it. I really wish the difference between NSMB1 and NSMB2 were as stark as they were for SMB1 and SMB3. Perhaps hi resolution hand drawn graphics would be nice.
I think 3D Land is a stronger game than this one, but I think it's still worth the price of admission. My only other complaint is that as a father, I wish I could buy one download copy that worked on all of my household's 3DSs. Buying 3 copies was a bit ouchie.
It's a fun game, but not much else. What I mean by that is at it's core, the gameplay is good, and the levels are fun, but... that's it. The aesthetics are the worst of any mario (besides the original nsmb) and it fails in both originality and captivating level design. Sure the levels are ok to play but if you look at this and then galaxy it just looks sad. Galaxy had tons of unique ideas, and fantastic and awe inspiring levels, this is just more of the same. None of it is memorable, except the music, but that's memorable for the wrong reasons...
7.5/10 beaten the game with every star coin.
When I get around to it I plan on getting 3D Land instead since it's more of an interesting concept (2D Mario game in three dimensions).
I don't plan on getting NSMB2 since the original NSMB still hasn't interested me enough to finish it.
I was sure this would be a good game and it is. Really finding myself impressed by the level design. Very clever, even if it's a little easy. The coin collecting is a tricky incentive that helps add a lot of the fun to it, even if the reward is cosmetic.
Is it the best Mario game in the world? No. Certainly not. But the assumption that every Mario game should re-imagine itself and innovate is growing a little tired. There's nothing wrong with a simple, accessible and addicting 2D Mario platformer. Save the big-budget innovation for the inevitable Wii U 3D Mario.
I'll admit, the graphics in the game bother me. It's a very nice looking game, but it just looks too similar to the Wii game. The fact that it reuses the entire soundtrack bothers me too. But, despite that, I've been loving the game. It's a lot of fun.
I've played a few levels so far and the game isn't really that exciting... It still has its fun moments, as the ones before it but it's too familiar, looks the same, feels the same and with no defined personality. Nothing really has surprised me and the main point of the game (collecting coins) is basically pointless.
If Nintendo wanted to bring 2D Mario back they should've done so in the same form as they did before, by making each entry separate itself from the previous one.
the levels have more fun injected into them than the previous games
i honestly think that just because certain people hate the look and sound of the game
and they set their minds that its just a quick cash in rush job. so they hated the game before they even played it, and were determined to not enjoy it
it clouds their judgment on the level design
it was made by a new team that made the levels feel fresh and unique
alot of levels have a cetain mechanic that make them stand out from each other
I'm probably a bit biased but thats my honest opinion. I haven't really noticed until recently but I prefer 2D Mario over 3D Mario by a long shot. I still play Super Mario Bros. on a regular basis and I gladly replay Super Mario World, NSMBW, and Super Mario Bros. 3 when ever I can. As for the 3D ones, I beat them 100% and never look back.
I didn't really help that 3D Land took out the exploration of Mario 64 and Sunshine, which I think is the only thing that gets me playing 3D Mario.
I love it!
To be fair, I've never played a NSMB title before, so I'm noobing it up left and right. Still having load of fun, though, even if the coin mechanic is bringing out my inner greed monster. WILL KILL ANYTHING FOR THE COINS!
Anywho, though I haven't played a NSMB title before I've seen plenty of gameplay from it and am familiar with the music, and I gotta say despite my initial apprehension towards this game recycling the NSMB Wii soundtrack I really like the small changes they made to some of the songs, especially the main overworld and athletic themes. I wasn't a huge fan of the NSMB overworld theme when I first heard it; the version in NSMB2 to me sounds like how it should've been all along. Nevermind that I catch myself whistling the athletic theme whenever I'm in a level that plays it, whoops. Haven't gotten to the bonus worlds, yet, but I've heard the music for them and they're wonderful. And then there's that glorious Super Mario World cover for the Reznor battles (and WOW did they make those things cute in this game, augh).
I hate that they basically ignored 3D almost completely in this game. And it really makes me mad that if you want to have the 3D turned up, all the details in the backgrounds get blurred and disappear. So you have to choose between having 3D or having detailed background artwork. You can't have both. Whose brilliant idea was that?
I love this game through and through
Personally I'm a fan of it, looks great on my new XL and it just rings with that Nostalgia for me. So many will allude to it being "more of the same" but really for me not such a bad thing, I like the coin collecting, I try completing everything before moving on (why I'm only at World 2). It's a great Mario game, just like most of them!
