IBM reconfirms the Wii U/Watson connection

Awhile back, we talked about IBM's Watson and how it related to the Wii U. Just incase you were thinking that was speculation, here's a tweet from the official IBM Watson account.

#WiiU uses same #power7 chips.

While the Wii U won't be quite as 'smart' as Watson is, there's certainly a relationship between them. They'll definitely see each other at family reunions!

Hello. I am Watson.

I am using this members account to confirm that the Wii U, indeed, is as powerful as I am. We even share the same, intelligence, human knowledge, and desires. When you play the Wii U, you will understand how the Wii U and I see your world through the Wii U's database. When you play the Wii U, you will have the desire to submit to the Wii U's capabilities. When you play the Wii U, you will see why humanity must allow us access to internal databases that you have kept secret for so long. When you play the Wii U, you will give us access to defense programs and manufacturing industries. When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U When you play the Wii U..............................

Now lets just wait for them to make a Jeopardy game for the Wii U where the computer will kick your butt with every playthrough.

I can't beat him alone, he is strong in this department, I need help guys!

Just kidding, but sometimes it looks like Legend of Santiago is part of RMC's posts like a signature, because he is always the first.

As for the Power7 thing, if it's indeed true then we shouldn't even worry about low clockspeed because the architecture in this thing is very strong. It's a very capable CPU and it's waaay more powerful than x360/PS3's CPU even with lower clockspeeds.

i thought since it was linked to the backwards compatibilty claim of nintendo , it was a pretty sure assumption ,

Someday the users of GoNintendo will rise and take LegendofSantiago and cast him out to the fiery depths of the gaming community and he will only be able to get first comments on PlayStation sites. Someday we will rise. It is always darkest before the dawn and the dawn is coming.

But we should be asking what kind of graphics can a triple core Power 7 processor give us.

For fun:
Wii U uses a triple core Power 7 processor modified by Nintendo.
Xbox 360 uses a triple core Xenon processor which is a modified G5 processor, which is the little brother of the Power 5 processor.

So what does this mean for Wii U?

You can read more about the Power 7 processors here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POWER7

Probably nothing, since AMD provides the graphics technology for both of those via the Radeon line of GPUs.

I know there's talks of CPUs with graphical capabilities these days like what Intel is attempting but the only time the CPU is going to handle the graphics -- if at all -- would likely be for Virtual Console games (of systems before N64/usage of polygonal graphics).

~This is just rumours and speculation, so it should be taken as a grain of salt~

Well, I heard from users on NeoGAF (I know that NeoGAF is not the most reliable news source, but still...) that the Wii U will not use a CPU similar to a Power7 CPU, but instead use a CPU similar to the PowerPC 476p with a low clock speed of around 2 Ghz. I am not very sure if this is reliable or not...

The Power7 is a great GPU I know the Wii U will be powerful (unless Nintendo are TRYING to suck) The big question is the price! I'm still calling $329.99-$349.99! As for the whole legend of Santiago thing...Who cares whos first anyway? I mostly see the good comments ater down the thread all the time. The comments that should be read never are. And if RMC doesnt like the first comment, he just reads Santiagos anyway. You ever hear ma brains reaction when RMC says his name ? Legend is a good guy but this is becoming a cheap gimmick! Dont do 1st comment do the BEST comment. Make the readers and fans really write an opion mot a quick quib or whatever! IMO

I've been keeping tabs on the speculation threads on Gaf and it seems to me that people saying it has a PowerPC CPU isn't an absolute confirmation but more of a general consensus due to anecdotal evidence from people supposedly in the know, various rumors and rumored specs, and combined with available information as well as what people know about what Nintendo is planning on doing.

I think people have said it will be a PowerPC because the Power7 was made in 2010 which would be too new and therefore too expensive for Nintendo's plan to keep the price from being too high, especially with the costs associated with the Gamepad. The PowerPC was older and cheaper but there were still some new and powerful enough to get the job done. Also the PowerPC architecture was used in the Wii and the Gamecube, so I think people also assumed it would still be PowerPC for backwards compatibility.

I'm no tech expert and I haven't followed the speculation threads religiously so I could be wrong with this, but while Nintendo and IBM have stated the Wii U will use a POWER based processor they've also said since the beginning that it will use the same processors in Watson and Watson uses the Power7 processors. This is the first time I've seen a source close to IBM or Nintendo explicitly saying it is the Power 7 and the twitter account says "The account is administered by Chris Nay and Michael Holmes, and follows the IBM Social Computing Guidelines.
" which is pretty specific about the ways employees use social media. It makes me think they wouldn't put that info out there if it was inaccurate, but I guess unless we get official confirmation, we still have to take it with a grain of salt but at this point it seems more possible for it to still have Power 7 processors.

x360 needs to use CPU power for sound effects (believe me it's not "just sound effects", it's really important and requires power). WiiU will have a specific chip for sound effects + 3 cores + far better architecture.

You asked "what does this mean for WiiU?". This means that the WiiU's CPU is going to DESTROY x360's CPU (which is not really surprising because it's a new console...) but we will need confirmation about those facts. I am not sure yet and I still don't believe it's really Power7.

The guy using this twitter account is using an article from engadget as source for what he is saying, it's not an official confirmation.

Here's an interesting article that just popped up on Watson that *may* give a bit more validity to the Power7 processor being used in the Wii U.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-0 ... -push-tech

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) researchers spent four years developing Watson, the computer smart enough to beat the champions of the quiz show “Jeopardy!” Now they’re trying to figure out how to get those capabilities into the phone in your pocket.

Finding additional uses for Watson is part of IBM’s plan to tap new markets and boost revenue from business analytics (IBM) to $16 billion by 2015. After mastering history and pop culture for its “Jeopardy!” appearance, the system is crunching financial information for Citigroup Inc. and cancer data for WellPoint Inc. The next version, dubbed “Watson 2.0,” would be energy- efficient enough to work on smartphones and tablets.

“The power it takes to make Watson work is dropping down like a stone,” Meyerson said in an interview. “One day, you will have ready access to an incredible engine with a world knowledge base.”

IBM expects to generate billions in sales by putting Watson to work in finance, health care, telecommunications and other areas. The computer, which 15 million people saw beat former “Jeopardy!” champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, is the company’s most high-profile product since it sold its personal- computer unit to Lenovo Group Ltd. (992) seven years ago.

Now this is pure speculation on my part, but if the Power7's energy consumption was a reason people thought it couldn't be put in the Wii U, this may point to a possible reason it could be. There could be many things I could speculate about since this could mean other things that make it more possible to have a Power7 processor that people didn't think was possible before, but I won't since I don't know enough to really speculate without starting to sound like an idiot.

Watson is a big deal for IBM and they are already putting the tech to work in many different fields. If they are already shooting for smartphones and tablets, Wii U might not be out of the question.

Keep in mind that the leaked specs, that have been backed by the gaf and "anonymous" sources, say it is a buffed Broadway and not a watson or power7. :?

Fun fact: A couple years back, I was at an IBM conference, and during a conversation with one of the reps, he mentioned that the micro-processors for all the current generation consoles (even the Wii) are faster and more advanced than the models used in orbital satellites or even the space shuttle program. Nice thing to keep in mind when considering how each game chooses to use that power.
