Nintendo explains why Miis are playable in New Super Mario Bros. U, considered other characters

The following comes from Nintendo EAD’s Takashi Tezuka, when asked why characters like Peach weren't made playable.

“We did consider that (other characters) when we looked at which characters we would use. We really came down on the side of using Mii characters rather than some of the characters you had mentioned. Through the technology of HD, you’re going to see more expression and emotion on the Mii character faces. Of course, we’re going to continue making Mario games, so you can maybe look forward to some of the things you were asking about in the future.”

Still can't animate dresses.

No, there's no excuse.
Miis should be an option, but not the only option.
I mean, shoot, are they going to replace every Mario Kart Driver with Miis next?

Oh Nintendo, pushing the generic avatars instead of giving (most of) us what we want.

I'm actually really happy they put Mii's in. Always wanted that to happen, and seeing family Mii's alongside Popeye, Darth Vader and Mario will be awesome.

Plus, if they are going to use different characters, I'd rather them play differently and have their own quirks and uses.

Miis are fun, sure. They're a neat way of personalizing an experience. It's okay if they don't really fit in the world...

But the Blue Toad and Yellow Toad are so dumb. Why are those character important? Why couldn't it have been Wario and Waluigi?

I hope they waste character slots on Blue Toad and Yellow Toad in the next Smash Bros. to keep up with their insistence on using these generic characters. :P

I'm glad I can use Miis. It makes it more personal. Ever since I got my 3DS with Pilotwings Resort, I've grown far more attached to Miiself.

Folks, you can use a Wario-looking Mii at least.. Though, I'd love Wario to be in it. He's better than that pansy hopping Mario.

That quote basically boils down to:

"We chose Miis instead of other characters because... we chose Miis instead of other characters"

So it explained nothing.

@Seroth

Wario and Waluigi make just as much sense, but it really should have been:

Mario, Luigi, Toad (Normal) and then either Wario, Daisy or some new character or something. Or you know, not have the same copypasta "kidnapped Peach" story and put Peach back as playable. Wart as the boss again. Fun times.

On the bright side, you can work around it and make a Wario Mii or Waluigi Mii and use the Wario/Waluigi overalls.

Still sucks and is stupid.

@DonnyKD

Despite liking Daisy, I can't think of a time where people would get upset that Wario was in a platformer over Daisy...

And you know Mii customization isn't going to be that much better. It's bad enough the Mii Plaza hats are ONLY for the Mii Plaza.

What Nintendo really needs to do is adopt a similar thing to Avatars (360) but without paid and sponsor crap.

Mario Tennis Open, Mario & Sonic, Nintendo Land and the 3DS have spoiled me (as well as Avatar Awards). I want my Mii to be able to dress up in Nintendo themed clothes and wear Nintendo character costumes/hats. And maybe have items (like a Yoshi that runs around your Mii or something). Sucks because those options are available, but Nintendo likes to stick to the old "lol solid colors and minimal features" nonsense.

*sigh*

@MrNintendo

Nobody. It was the fact that they should've just had it been like SMB2 in the first place and NOT had Peach be kidnapped.

@Spaghetti9001

No. The problem with Sonic was that they kept adding NEW characters to be playable and they were worse than the last (and made Shadow worse than ever), and the cast grew enormous and nobody wanted to play them.

People still want to play Tails, Knuckles and maybe Amy, or Metal Sonic (and people want to play Shadow, but you know). They don't want to play Team Chaotix, Rouge, robots, Big (I do), Cream, Silver, that raccoon, Blaze, the birds from the Riderz games, etc.

Obviously those characters do have their fans that do want to play them, but most people just wanted to play the original cast, before Adventure and onward started filling the series with characters.

People wanting to play established, OLD characters from Mario isn't that weird or ironic at all.

@zyxion1

This would make me okay with Miis being in this over more deserving characters.

...If Nintendo doesn't add playable Daisy, then it looks like they just don't want my money. :(

They should have add both (Mario characters and Miis)...

@MrNintendo
How about after saving Peach, you can play as her?

Bring back Wart as an antagonist please! Make it New Super Mario USA 2 or something then you can have Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad as playable characters then make it so that each player can go off on their own rather then having a single camera for everyone. 2 player local co-op player 1 used the Wii Screen control if they 2 characters get separated and then if playing 4 player online co-op everyone HAS their own TV to move around as they please.

There you go nintendo another free idea that will make you a lot of money.

So in other words, make multiplayer worse?

Personally, I'm just waiting for one of you to say "Well, looks like I'm not getting the game!" so I could officially say that this fanbase is just as bad as Sonic's, if not a tiny bit better.

I can understand not wanting Wario in this game because he would play differently than the others..
But I think everyone here wants a New Super Mario Bros USA, and it would finally spice up the old New Super Mario Bros formula a bit. Plus, they could add Wario, and make it so you could play four player with any combination of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Wario. They could even make it 5 player, and have the player with the touchscreen be able to go off the main screen. All the players could play differently, just like Super Mario Bros USA / Super Mario Bros 2.

Yeah, while one Toad is fine, two just seems pointless and lazy. Also, I'm ok with Miis as long as they're just an option and not something you HAVE to use... though it kind of annoys me that they can use Miis but not other characters.

That's not true. People just don't want an excessive amount of new characters shoehorned into every game, and are quite happy simply with Tails, Knuckles and even Amy as optional characters.

Tendonin wrote:Your reaction literally makes no sense. He never said that Miis showed more emotion compared to any particular character. The implication was that Miis would show more emotion than they previously had due to the new tech.

Which totally explains why Mii characters were given preferential treatment over the likes of Peach and Wario.

At least the other members here don't blindly defend every poor decision Nintendo makes.

Have you ever played Mario Party? That's a lame excuse and you know it.

Weren't the suggestions for a princess or Wario instead of, inexplicably, two toads, brought to Nintendo's attention right after NSMBWii came out? And then they did that, "Oh, is that something that you would want? Huh."

They then proceeded to do the exact same thing as before, plus superimposition of Mii heads as some kind of consolation. There's a reason there's a perception of laziness with the NSMB series.

Lol. It's just funny that people are complaining how generic Miis are when some pretty cool things have been done with them. And due to lack of a deep story in Mario games, Peach really doesn't have much of a personality, besides being peachy lol

@toadster101:

"At least the other members here don't blindly defend every poor decision Nintendo makes."

Yeah. They just hate irrationally on minor things.

@AmicableWalrus:

Yes, NSMB is lazy because they picked Toads and Miis over Wario and Waluigi!

That... makes no goddamn sense, did the definition of the word "lazy" change from "little effort" to "does anything I don't like?"

That's not the only reason, but yes, it is lazy, especially after people expressed their interest in Peach and/or Daisy as playable characters, and the response was "But then we'd have to code a dress. Too much work." I imagine Wario and Waluigi would be less work than the princesses, but I guess having the same character for players 3 and 4 is much more ambitious, especially when they're recycling it from a previous title.

Furthermore, having the miis isn't much better. The awkward imposition of a mii head on the Mario model is conspicuous and clashes with the art style. Have it as an option, fine, but it shouldn't have been added in lieu of actual characters.

That is just lame, and no defending. I love NSMBWii and I'm looking forward to NSMBU, but come on Nintendo! Miis are not even part of the universe, so why not Toad and Peach? The excuse for Peach is stupid too. And I don't want Wario or Waluigi because that wouldn't make sense either because why would they be interest in helping Mario and co?
User avatar
12 Sep 2012 15:21

@DonnyKD

I'd love to hear you explain how using two of the same character is not lazy.

Explain what part of "color swap = new character" is not "little effort".

And the Miis are all Mario/Luigi bodies, recolored, with a Mii head on them.

They also said the reason they didn't want to use Peach in NSMBW was animating the dress, and Wario because "people would expect him to play different" (which most didn't, really). How's that not lazy? OH WE DON'T WANT TO ANIMATE.

Stop acting like you know what you're talking about.

@Da_RaY

What cool things have been done with Miis?

And you miss the point of wanting to play Peach. We had established characters that have been playable (SMB2, duh?) and they went with color swap Toads and Miis.

Not even two specific Toads, like Toad, Toadsworth, Toadette. YELLOW AND BLUE TOAD.

Well... that doesn't stop Wario from appearing as a playable character in Super Mario 64 DS (to help Mario, Luigi and Yoshi save Peach). :I

I'm fairly certain that Miyamoto was only joking when he said that Peach's dress was the reason why she isn't playable in New Super Mario Bros.

@peenbbb2

That doesn't count! That was a bonus unlockable, not part of the main story. Plus in SM64 there was no Wario so!

@YoshiRider123

Obviously, but it was a lame joke!

@MoldyClay

I don't see the big deal with the Toads. Like okay, they were not existing characters, but the cutscenes and player imagination gave them personality. I agree one could have been a female, but Toadsworth is old so I don't know if he can handle the jumping, lol.

Really guys, everything about NSMB past the 1st DS title has screamed lazy cash in. For crying out loud, this is a WiiU game relying almost exclusively on assets from an early DS game! Anyone expecting effort on Nintendo's part is deluding themselves, I'm honestly very surprised they made the effort to put Mii's in (which, while still lazy as hell, I think is really cool).
