WHAAAAAAAAAA?!?!?
Well, talk about rewriting a part of history. Then who the hell are they?! Thanks to Sack for the heads up.

One word: cloning. Mario/Metal Gear crossover confirmed.
Wooow... must be a pain to have a father like Bowser and have no clue about who your mother is.
Just checking through the instruction book of Mario 3, and on 3 separate occasions, they refer to the Koopalings as his kids! Bowser says "These are my 7 children", it notes that, "These are Bowsers Kids", and Larry says "Our father has instructed us to protect the wands."
Maybe they're all adopted from the real Morton Koopa?
But but but... my love of Bowser Jr comes from the fact that Bowser holds him above his other children and the Koopalings try to win his approval with steadfast crab mentality.
Nope. I will still think of them as his children. I know Miyamoto says different but it's just one of those cases where it works better. It's like how in Japan, K. Rool is three different characters in the DKC games, not one character in costume..
I wish someone would ask where the hell Bowser Jr. has been? He wasn't in NSMB2, NSM3DL, and is not in NSMBU! Where is he (sticker star doesn't count as it's not a "main" game).
Wow, shocking.
2012 truly is the year of revelations, isn't it?
It's truly quite a bummer, since I have always believed that the Koopalings really are Bowser's kids. Not that it was a lie, as it used to be their official status, even in Japan.
To elaborate, here's a piece of text from Japanese Wikipedia:
コクッパ
クッパの子供達。7人いることからコクッパ7兄弟[2]やコクッパ7人衆[3]と総称される。日本国外での名称は「Koopalings」
And a translation goes something like this:
Little Bowsers
Bowser's children. A group of seven collectively known as 7 Little Bowser Siblings [Super Mario Bros 3] and just 7 Little Bowsers [Super Mario World], as well as "Koopalings" outside of Japan.
On the other hand, I have disliked Bowser jr. ever since his debut, and this revelation is just going to fuel the flames.
Pics or it didn't happen. Just some legit proof. Otherwise, NOPE Miyamoto, the Koopa Kids are Bowser's children and so is Bowser Jr. Though I do like the idea of them being nephews/niece or other relatives. They are called Koopa Kids because they are full of life and have the power of youth, but they aren't necessarily BOWSER's Koopa Kids. Hmm, will need to investigate further!
Also, never understood the hate for Bowser Jr. He's a nice character imo and should be in Smash 4. And his laugh is the BEST: Hehehe! Plus his theme song from NSMB is fitting to his laugh, the Hehehe! theme.

I believe I saw official art of Bowser Junior for New Super Mario Bros U, so he may very well be in that game.
What?? My world is upside down now!
This does not surprise me. Nintendo Europe changed the name "Koopalings" to "Bowser's minions" in both New Super Mario Bros. Wii and 2. But why would Nintendo want to change Bowser's relation with the Koopalings?
Sorry Miyamoto, but you're wrong. I don't care if you're in charge of the series, you're wrong on this one.
Wait, I thought there would multiple Toads... LOL
I'll still refer to them as his children. Bowser has 8 children, not one. He probably has a lot more besides that as well, but we never see his wife. For that matter, he always kidnaps Peach for some odd reason, so maybe his wife left him? I shouldn't even try to make sense of this...
Doesn't the article at the end kind of debunk the part about them not being his children? Why would the article state that "Or... ARE THEY HIS CHILDREN?"
Edit: LOL, I didn't see the full image. Nvm!
It says "Kooalings" lol
Whao! I thought Bowser Jr was Baby Bowser from some odd time warp thing (seen in partners in time) where the kid versions of themselves interacted with adult versions?! And the koopa kids are not his kids?!
Maybe they are step kids from the missing mother...that would be awesome! Bowser is always kidnapping Peach to be a Surrogate mother to all the children...that's so messed up, and I love it!!! FTW!
Only way this could be better is if Bowser hooks up with Wart (from Mario 2) as his life partner. Wart is A Sexual and can have kids on his own, Bowser and Wart get drunk on cheap boxed wine and BOOM 9 months later Bowser Jr joins to clan.
There are multiple Toads.
But there is one who is actually named Toad that stands apart from the others, as the one in Super Mario Bros 2, Wario's Woods, and many other notable appearances. He was also the only one to have his name show up in Dialogue when he spoke in Super Mario RPG, while all other Toads did not.
Sort of like that one special Yoshi.
But as the series goes on, it feels like that one special Toad dissolved into a generic crowd, and now there is no "Toad" the character, just Toad the species.
Wow
that's an OUTRAGE !!! how dare they !!! what a retcon !!!
no yeah i'm ok , i was actually amused by that story during smb3 , now if they decided to change , i've been through enough comic books to understand how frequent a retcon is .
Pretty sure, they've been referred to as the "Koopa Kids" at one point too - might have been the cartoon.
Bowser Jr is just a bastardization of Baby Bowser from SMW2: Yoshi's Island.
@bound_for_earthbound
I agree, there's definitely THE Toad and THE Yoshi.
Not really sure why this even matters or why people are mad about it.
They could easily be adopted kids, thus making them his kids, but not HIS kids, you know?
And it'd make sense.
I don't know how Japan handles it, but when people were freaking out yesterday at the Zelda event I was just like "Oh. That's not even surprising to me for some reason"
*ring ring*
"This is Mario, Colonial."
"Mario, remember, that if you collect 100 coins, you get an extra life."
"Got it Colonial."
*hands up*
Wait, I thought Bowser's only children were the all the Yoshis! XD
This doesn't shock me. At one point looking at some Japanese and American Mario stuff online when NSMBWii was about to come out, I was starting to realize that the information and sources that named the Koopalings as Bowser's children in the past were all NOA materials or the cartoons, and the Japanese materials always seemed to describe them in a much more vague, distant "hey, here are a bunch of child turtle creatures that work under Bowser" way. "Ko Koopa", as they're known in Japan, just means "Bowser Children," but I suppose not necessarily "Bowser'S children." How could Nintendo write off putting them in any games for over a decade if they were actually supposed to be Bowser's children in the plot, after all?
Our main Toad is explicitly known in Japan as Kinopio (pun on "kinoko"/"mushroom" and Pinocchio?), but I think the whole Toad race are called Kinopios in Japan too (e.g., Blue Kinopio & Yellow Kinopio).
