Cliffy B. says he'll 'be watching Wii U closely'

Being raised on All Things Nintendo I will always I love all things Nintendo. I'll be watching the Wii U closely. I think Nintendo may have initially lost a little of their core with the Wii for a bit, honestly, and they seem to have realized this. I believe they also recognize that we live in a "multi-screen" culture hence the controller design. I played ZombiU at PAX and it was promising (even though the controls could use a little loving!) so we'll have to wait and see. - Cliffy B.

Why do I feel like that's a cop-out answer? I really feel like all we hear from Epic is how they love Nintendo, but they never bother to make a game for their platforms. Will Wii U change that? Thanks to all that sent this in.

That'd be nice if Epic could make games for Nintendo. A nice first project could be porting Infinite Blade over to work with the GamePad. If the Wii-U eShop is as good as the 3DS eShop, that shouldn't be a problem at all!

Exactly. It'll be nice if Epic develops for Wii U, but honestly between Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter, Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Darksiders 2, etc etc etc, I'm not really missing Epic all that much. It's always welcome to have their content, but the initial signs point to us Nintendo fans getting some pretty awesome developer support without them,

I know Epic are a third party, but don't they have some sort of deal with Microsoft. Other than their iOS Games, have the released on anything other than Xbox 360 in the last few years?

Cliffy B is still one massive Nintendo fan but I'm not gonna knock the guy or the company he works for, for not making a game on a Nintendo platform.

It passes the duck test for cop-out.
A lot of FPS experience. A good one on a the WiiU would be nice.
But I doubt it will be from Epic.

Epic prefers to make video games on hardware that is graphically cutting-edge and quite frankly, that's not what Wii U is about (even Nintendo admits that much). Wii U's hardware is strong, obviously more capable than the 360 and PS3, but Wii U's hardware isn't going to be able run UE4 without a hitch and the console won't be quite as powerful when compared to Xbox 720 and PS4 (even if those consoles not going to be a full generational leap in graphics). Besides, Epic is already working on Fortitude, its first Unreal 4-based PC exclusive title. On top of that, Epic's track record has been with making titles for the Xbox brand as far as home consoles go. I doubt we will see that change in the future. Epic may love Nintendo, but it is unlikely that we will see any games come to it from them. On the bright side, we will likely see Valve show Nintendo some love with future multiplatform titles now that Nintendo is using more competent hardware compared to the Wii.

They atleast got PeopleCanFly to make Bulletstorm which was obviously multiplatform.

The Gears franchise though is obviously a Microsoft thing. But I think they've stepped away from that now (atleast Epic themselves seem to have). We'll see where they go next, but it's far more likely they're aiming for Orbis/Durango with UE4 than focusing on UE3 anymore.

With their lack of experience with Nintendo hardware, I doubt Epic would be able to make a decent game for the Wii U. Indeed the the Unreal engine has been used on Nintendo platforms (even a game for Wii U), but that’s through some other developer who leased the engine from Epic. So they would have to get notes from other devs who used to Unreal engine on a Nintendo platform.

@Lockdale
Epic create and develop the Unreal Engine (including the developing it to run on Wii U), so why would you think they would not be able to utilize it to it's full potential on Wii U over a developer who didn't build the engine?

Unreal Engine 4 please but as for their games...I can do without!

It would be nice if he could be in a position to make a game like the ones he apparently loves from Nintendo. I really don't care for Epic's idea of games very much. All flair not much substance when it comes to gameplay honestly.

Considering that epic are more concerned about showing off their beloved UE4, I very much doubt Cliffy actually cares that much about Nintendo. These guys turn their noses up at anything that doesn't allow them to show off graphics. Rein in particular is really bad about this as his comments about graphical power kind of indicate a rather poisonous mindset

Cliffy is a bit of an egotistical douche, and I bet said inflated ego would never let him do something that it perceives as a potential threat to his brocore reputation.

I would have to say, having played and been a Nintendo game fan since the 80s, that I would constitute as part of their "core audience", and I, nor any of the friends I know who also grew up with Nintendo, have never "left". I rather enjoyed the Wii, and it had more games that I played and enjoyed since, literally, the SNES era.

The only "core" people he is referring to, are dumb "hardcore" nerds who probably didn't buy a Gamecube, and weren't going to ever buy a Wii, nor probably even the Wii U, anyway.

P.S. Ooooooooooooh, he's gonna "keep an eye" on it? WOW GUYS, maybe that means we'll get *gasp* an AMAZING Epic Games FPS from him someday.

Or people who want to play third-party games. Or want a system that actually sees support in its final two years.

By the way, everyone, the idea that "FPS is for teh brocorez!" is no better a generalization than "Nintendo is for teh kiddez!"

same here. i grew up with nintendo since my brother had a NES during the 80s and i haven't looked back since.

fans that have stuck with nintendo throughout since they first played one of their consoles understand what nintendo is all about. those who never bought a wii because of their perceptions that it is a kiddy console and hate nintendo for whatever reason don't get it and will never get it.

these are the people nintendo and us fans shouldn't focus too much on.

Thanks for "enlightening" me, Mr. Walrus. If you haven't noticed, Wii U has strong third party support right out of the gate. And there is no reason to think that it will wane in coming years. And finally, while you're right, not EVERYONE who enjoys FPS is a "bro", I can in fact personally confirm that from everything I've seen, those games (along with like Madden) are pretty much all that said "bros" go for. On the Xbox, naturally.

Have a nice day.

You're correct, the Wii-U is off to a decent start with third-party support, which hopefully will continue. However, this is irrelevant to what we're talking about.

My comment regarding third-party support and "final years" support was referring to the Wii situation, in response to your suggestion that the only people who would be unhappy with the Wii or critical of it were individuals with some deep-seated grudge against Nintendo who probably haven't bought at least two generations of their consoles. I apologize if this wasn't clear enough.

As for "that's all bros play," I can just as easily say Nintendo-style games are "all that kiddies play." People attempt to attach these demographic labels to invalidate entire genres, and I'm pointing out that it's happening on both sides.

Sorry, but I happen to (sadly) encounter Bros on a regular basis as a live in a college town. So I do in fact happen to know what I'm talking about when it comes to their tragically limited gaming tastes. I also happen to know for a fact, that equally as sadly, most "kiddies" I know, while some may own a Wii, actually ALSO own Xboxes, because "that's the cool system to own".

Lastly, while I agree Wii support has been lackadaisical especially in the last couple years (although games like Goldeneye and Epic Mickey certainly counter that a bit), that is not what I was talking about. I was specifically pointing out the fact that most of these people who are talking mad trash about Wii U, are people who never had any intention of buying or trying one in the first place, because , get this "it's not the cool system to own". They are people who probably grew up with Xbox or Playstation, and have the silly "Nintendo is for kids" or nowadays "Nintendo is for casuals" nonsense in their brains, meaning they'll never be caught dead owning a Nintendo console.

Meaning, that all their hate and criticism is rather pointless, as if somehow if the Wii U were indefinably "better", they WOULD get it, which they wouldn't. You seem to have misinterpreted whatever you thought my insinuations were.

You're implying that the only people unhappy with Nintendo, or that the only people they "lost", are, as both of us said, people with some anti-Nintendo stigma who probably haven't bought at least the last two generations of their consoles, maybe haven't even bought any at all.

But there are plenty of Nintendo fans that feel alienated or disillusioned after this past generation, which Cliffy B. believes Nintendo has recognized. He said "their [Nintendo's] core", not "the Xbox crowd" or "Playstation fanboys". The issue lies in the established Nintendo fanbase, not in the "unwavering haters gonna hate unwaveringly" situation.
