Friday is here, although it seemed like it would never come around! These weeks leading into the Wii U launch are painfully slow. Let's hope the weekend goes as slow as the week did! See you in a few, short hours.
To be honest, I am surprised to see just how quickly the Wii U is selling out. We haven't even see the system really hit any stride in public marketing. There have been some Experience Events and a little bit of in-store advertising, but the people that know about Wii U the most are those that follow the game industry on a regular basis. I guess that's all it is going to take to wipe out the first round of Wii U shipments!
Left and right, the system is being snatched up. Nearly every retailer you can think of in the states is experiencing some sort of sell-out. This is especially true when you're looking at the Deluxe Wii U bundle. The extra $50 price nets you quite the assortment of goodies, which is apparently good enough for most people to pass up. Throw in the color black and the deal seems pretty sweet indeed!
If there are any Wii U units left to preorder, they mostly fall into the Basic bundle. It seems that this is the second choice for most consumers out there. They try to go for the Deluxe bundle, but when that is becoming less and less of an option, those same people bite the bullet and snatch up a Basic bundle. It's better to have to have the system than no system at all!
I thought I'd reach out to you guys and see if there were any of you that preordered a Basic Wii u bundle because that's the one you wanted. I'm also looking for those that plan to purchase this version. I'd love to hear the reasons behind why you're purchasing this version over the Deluxe. Is it a money issue, or are there other reasons at play?

I wanted the Deluxe set with the white console. White just makes it look magical. Black is cool, looks very elegant, but there's something special about the white... That said, I wanted the Deluxe Set because of Nintendo Land and especially the Deluxe Digital Promotion since I'm going to be downloading a lot (plus the extra 32 GBs may come in handy). But given that I don't have the money to preorder yet, then I'm afraid that by the time I do have it there'll be only Basic Sets available. If only there was a way to get the digital promotion on the Basic Set then I could ignore the Deluxe Set altogether.
I want the deluxe and I will wait for it.
Okay, well now you're starting to convince me to just stick with the Basic. For me, I have always been a late adopter of technology. However, this time with the Wii U - I wanted to 'keep up with the Joneses'. I already have an external drive I use to play my Wii games off of, so I can just use that. I do like the black color, but I know it will collect dust and drive my wife crazy! I really don't care about the rewards program either. I do want to get Nintendo Land, but perhaps I should be patient and save my money...
On a side note - I found a very small locally owned video game store the other day. I asked the owner about Wii U and he said he already allowed a pre-order for the Deluxe for one customer, but he didn't know how many more he could guarantee. I find it odd that he can guarantee 1 console, but is uncertain of the others. He said he would contact the supplier and have an answer for me today. So, I'm going to call them back at noon when they open, but after reading your post MrAwesome23....I'm really thinking the Basic is the way to go.
This. Black is great and all, but white is so much sleeker and cleaner looking.
But that deluxe set is awful tempting...although I do have a 500GB external drive I could always use...and I do have to question just how much play time I'll get out of Nintendo Land considering I have no one else to play it with. Really thinking about saving that money and putting it towards Darksiders II instead.
quite the tale! what you did was excellent in my opinion. getting a hold of nintendo like that was an awesome move, and the more educated some of these stupid, biased retail employees get the better off things will be in the long run (though they will still probably stick to their ignorant opinions as they explain things to customers). as far as i know, nintendo's connection tours will have games from all sorts of companies - not just their own. anything to promote and show off the wii u. i'd imagine it would be like smaller versions of e3 or their new york preview event. i think the guy just meant they won't be promoting games like black ops 2 on their own with commercials, fliers, etc. they'll leave that to those publishers. i wouldn't be bothered. more people need to call up and be vocal like this!
A few. A) He was patronizing you, it is called costumer service. They don't see you as a viable marketing genius, just a concerned customer they want to soothe for the time being. (I don't mean that to be harsh; I'd like to remain honest though.) Nintendo is a thrifty company, they are not going to showcase third party games because they would likely have to pay third-parties a fee to haul them around and showcase them or the company would have to give their blessing. Either way, while it's essentially advertising, they still have to obtain another companies product. BLOPSII isn't coming with them, because Activision isn't going to give it to them. It's not going to happen. Expect Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Wario, Nintendo Land and maybe, maybe ZombiU.
B) You spend $10,000 on games? ...WHAT?! Don't get me wrong, I can already tell that the prices are steep for you guys, but... just how steep is software? I can't even imagine plunking that down.
Glad I could help out! Admittedly, Nintendo is definitely giving us a good deal either way instead of trapping us in one sku (unlike the 360's launch where it was either grab one with a HDD or one without!) I really didn't even think of the dust or fingerprints until other users in here brought it up, but like your's, my wife hated my original PS3 because it was such an eyesore. We literally dusted it and 30mins later it looked like it had been dropped in a sand pit.
...They turn yellow? I've had mine since launch day at midnight to play Twilight Princess with and it looks majestically white. What even causes them to yellow? My white remotes, classic controller, nunchuck sticks, console, everything still looks virgin white and I've had them for each year of the console's lifespan.
I take it black, like my men.
@vertikal
Fascinating! I've dealt with ignorant store clerks before, but you actually did something about it.
Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo is secretly complicit in the "kiddy system" image, knowing that they can't steal much of the pie that has been mostly eaten by Sony and Microsoft. There IS money in the children's demographic, after all. But I would hope it's not true. I want a wide range of gaming experiences from Nintendo, and it would upset me to only get easy Kirby games or something.
Even though I own the other systems, it's the Nintendo-made games that I'm always the most excited for. I like to think they're still committed to giving a grown man like me fun experiences. I hope to not be proven wrong.
In my mind, the main factor is if I want Nintendo Land. Whether it's 8GB or 32GB, that's not going to get you far if you've got digital games, DLC, patches, demos, the OS, maybe installs...As it stands it's painfully inevitable that I'll have to drop even more money to get a substantial amount of storage with either model. If the deluxe had an integrated hard drive, even if only 120 GB, that would make it a lot more attractive to me.
At first I did want the deluxe but then when I went to pre-order the system at gamestop they only had the basic. During the last week I have begin to enjoy my option of buying the basic more. I like the white color since it is the same as my launch day Wii. I also like the cheaper price because I can buy one more game or controller on my budget. The memory might be limited but I have several big flash drives laying around the apartment.
I'm probably not buying it at launch, mainly because of financial reasons. Later on the earlier games are much cheaper. Also i'd like the deluxe set in white! I don't want the stripped down version which the basic set actually is, but I dont really like the glossy cheap looking black version
I do survey's online to earn extra money...vindale.com and surveyhead.com.....that's how i paid for my Wii U...(wife and I are going to Vegas in Dec...so all extra money is being saved for that trip).....just thought this would help...
Seems like we have a bunch of people in here who weren't quick enough to pre order the deluxe bundle and are now telling us how much better the basic bundle is. I play, I play,
Anyways, I pre-ordered the deluxe bundle because I wanted black, wanted Nintendo Land, wanted the extra memory, and I wanted a charging station for my gamepad. I feel bad for all the people who are going to have to charge the gamepad with it laying down. Personally that would drive me insane. The "plastic accessories" when bought separately are around a $35 value so it's definitely worth it. Also white may not show fingerprints as well, but Doritos/food seasoning, dirt from hands, sweat from hands, and even minor smudges all show up pretty bad on a white console. Also, black will look way better with all of my other black electronics on my entertainment stand. To each his own though.
deluxe hands down... i would hate got getting access to nintendo network
I want the deluxe but they're sold out everywhere and I don't have a job yet. I'm tired of white consoles....
I wanted to a get black WiiU due to me getting a white Wii. If Basic had been shown in black instead of white I would have chosen the basic model. I would have bought a 2TB external, hard drives aren't expensive nowadays.
Deluxe for me. I'll go basic if I don't have a choice.
Honestly, I wouldn't really care about which system to get if it wasn't for the deluxe points on downloads.
I've considered getting the White one instead, but the 'premium' service is too much of a draw. Hopefully it doesn't get too f***ed up here.
To MrAwesome23 (sorry i do my surfing on ps3, so it's hard to cut and paste quotes and remove text etc...)
In no way did I read your response as harsh, I love honest opinion and perspective more than anyone.
Yes the marketing manager may have been patronising me but at the end of the call he gave me the contact for the team that hire the promo people for the connection tours! He suggested, being as passionate as I am, that I'd be very suitable to have on the floor. I mean, I didn't ask or anything, I think he was a bit taken aback by how well I articulated my points. But either way...he did say there were no plans 'of yet' to showcase any mature titles from any third parties, but fingers crossed.
As for the money I spend on games, I have easily spent $15,000 on games since the 64 . I've already spent around $1200 on the 3DS alone. In the Wii's lifetime I spent around $5000 on software, of which I have refined down to around 50 titles. On the Gamecube I would have spent around $5000 and have kept around 50 pieces of software out of the many bought. When the 64 was around I spent about $3000 on software and have kept 20 of those titles. And a couple of years back I was thirsting for some third party experiences so I bought this ps3 and spent about $2000, but I since sold all that off except the 'Unchartered' games and 'Red Dead Redemption'. $1500 on DS games as well and have kept 10 of those..... and for the WiiU there are already about 10 titles, if not more, I want to buy just in the launch window, so there is $1000 right there...so I reckon I'll end up spending at least $8,000 over the next six years, easily..but that is only if the WiiU manages to last the distance with third-party support. I should add that I live in Australia and N64 games were $100 a pop back then! In fact SNES games were that price in Australia when I was in highschool. And EB games will be selling WiiU titles at $110 , which is why I buy at BigW and JBHiFi...you can usually pick up games the week they launch for $80-$90 at those stores.
Wow, it's really nuts when you think about it, but I do like to collect and refine my nintendo collections. I mean, I even buy games in genres I'm not particularly interested in and may give up playing after a few levels to go to something else, because as a working 36 year old I just don't have the time to play a great deal...but I do have the time to collect.
Collecting nintendo games is my expensive hobby. Like tonight I scanned my Wii collection and realised I had only played 1 level of Silent Hill:Shattered Memories and life got in the way...so I'm going to play it all weekend. That's the beauty of maintaining a decent library...you just look at the bookshelf and go "Hmmm, I feel like playing a level of Geist or say Metal Gear:Twin Snakes on the GC" and you can just do it. There's none of this, "Damn I wish I had of bought so and so". I'm sure many loyalists on this site are just laughing at me, thinking..."That's nothing I have 250 Wii games". I mean, I think I'm quite reserved in my expenditure when I go on the net and see these collectors with complete collections for a console.
I'm going for the basic model. I'm going to rack up a high enough amazon.com e-card funding to get the games I want, accesories, in addition to finding the cheapest external USB hard drives they have, no matter what storage it has (GB or TB). ^_^
I preordered the Basic set right after the press event for few reasons....I enjoy the white color for a console, all my Wii controllers that I will be using with WIi U are white, the black gamepad will likely show fingerprints like crazy. Do I wish the delux set came in white, hell yes, however I will be getting SD card or external HD regardless so the storage isn't of concern to me, especially after my WIi became corrupt after playing Kirby's Epic Yarn - i learned to ALWAYS back up my game files if possible (couldn't for Brawl though :*( ). Plus I don't need all the extras that come with the delux set. I'm getting NintendoLand, and I will likely get the charge stand for gamepad down the road.
Ah, well, considering that little point; you weren't being patronized. I proud myself in finding meaning in every action and word choice; handing out a number like that isn't a common act, nor is expressing that you should be on the show floor (and you probably should be). This is an incredible thing you've done, I have to say. Maybe you can make a career out of this, eh?
But no, don't get me wrong, I have a huge collection. I've never been one to only play a few levels of anything, but I've already downed $700-800 into my 3DS and heck, on launch day for Wii U I'll already be blowing around $800 in one evening. I suppose I never saw how fast the money added up, and to this day probably couldn't figure out how much of that total I actually had to spend or how much I got for free. I used to buy hundreds of titles, now I limit myself to $400 on software per year total. That means covering all three consoles and one handheld. Keeps a grasp on my college-kid-limited-finances. But, it also helps to inspire me to get more and more and more and more and more of them for free!
This year alone I never spent a dime on SSX, Kid Icarus, NSMB2, and plenty of others (that I mistakenly have forgotten to record...) for free. Not only that but I've already got Luigi's Mansion 2 buckled down to $9.96.
I might need to take note from you and start keeping a record, might serve me well! Your collection sounds fantastic, and I agree, having a decent library at your disposal is one of the most enjoyable aspects of whittling down a collection into a "greatest hits" that stares back at you in all it's glory.
I'll repost what I wrote in another thread
I'm going Basic, mostly for the White unit (and White Gamepad especially) and a cheaper price. I loathe the look of the Black WiiU and GamePad (IMHO) and it is sure to be a giant fingerprint and dust magnet if it's anything like the Black Wii and Wiimotes, and everything that comes as a bonus in the deluxe version, I'll just get for Christmas I guess (plus it means I get NintendoLand in a box! :p)
The ONLY incentive I have for going Deluxe is the Digital Deluxe Promotion, but I don't think it's worth an extra $50 and a color I really don't want.
Also, I was either going to be the 1st Basic preorder vs. the 16th Deluxe preorder, so that made the coice a little easier.
I'll admit when walking into this discussion I was thinking that no one was going Basic, but I'm actually really happy that there are a lot of *very* intelligent discussion on why they're happy on preordering it. Really makes me think that Nintendo went the right choice and went with two color options.
I for one went with the Deluxe, but that's because I like black, was on the fence on Nintendoland (Though Metroid Blast might have sold it), and that I'll take probably advantage of the eShop promotion (might swing me to get Trine 2).
If the basic set would've come also in black and NintendoLand included, I would've gone for it, but Nintendo left little choices to consider.
