Random Time! - New Super Economic Downturn Bros. 2

There's been a lot of talk about the coin value in Super Mario Bros. games lately. I guess New Super Mario Bros. 2 really got people thinking about how much those coins might pull in in the real world! This article takes a look at the overflow of coins in NSMB2, and how it might have devalued the coin a bit.

While Im also not too happy about the excesive amount of coins in the new Mario, on their defense, earning extra lives in videogames in general is no longer as relevant as before. Previously it seemed that many games borrowed the difficulty from arcades which encouraged you to pay up to continue. Nowadays gaming at home works different and games have adapted to that.

All the coins in NSMB2 don't detract from the real fun of the game which is still all about tight platforming gameplay, finding all of the star coins and the secret exits for the stages that have them. I mean honestly, dying from running out of lives hasn't really been an issue in a Mario game from day one.

Um, yeah, in the first games it was more of an issue, since they were hard with few extra lives making it harder and having to start all over again. Unless you're an expert at playing the game, I guess...
(unless that's not what you meant?)

I wouldn't say i'm an expert. I've been playing for a long time though so I know my way around the mushroom kingdom. :)

And no, it wasn't ever an issue. The 1up trick in the first game in world 3-1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-DNt_erbL4 meant infinite lives. So it hasn't been a problem since day one. Maybe if you don't/didn't know about it than ok I guess, but who doesn't know about it?

The slot machine in SMB2 meant plenty of extra lives and the abundance of coins, 1up blocks and mini games offering free lives in SMB3 meant you always had plenty of lives. Ergo, it's never been an issue.

Well, true. I know of the trick, but I was writing from the perspective of not using any tricks/glitches and just playing the game without knowing about those... also it's hard to get right, at least the first times.

I guess I just suck at those games and keep losing over and over in the same place.... should just play more.
