Sumo Digital disputes Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed framerate issues, says all is fine

A comment from Sumo Digital's Steve Lycett...

That's certainly comforting to hear. Still, I don't doubt that framerate comparison tests will litter the internet when the Wii U version comes out. Let's hope this statement holds up! Thanks to Nuckles87 for the heads up.

I also added some extra information after I sent it based on some new info I learned after the fact. I'll go ahead and quote it here. It kind of just adds more detail to what's been said above:

For those of you who haven’t listened to Sonic Talk, Lycett’s explanation for the poor performance of the Wii U version was the simple fact that the demo the critics were playing at GC was based on old code. Since then, more previews have come out from other events complaining about the frame rate issues, but that’s because according to Lycett on SSMB, it’s the same build. Due to the rush to make the Wii U launch, Sumo Digital hasn’t had time to make new demos to show off to the public, meaning that the build people have been playing this month was the same build they were playing at GC back in August. This demo, according to what Lycett said on Sonic Talk, was already three weeks old at that show.

In other words the demo that the press has been playing for the last two months was a demo based on code from July. So these previews are by no means based on a build anywhere near completion. Will this put the frame rate concerns to bed? Probably not, but I do hope this at least did so for everyone on this site. For the full Sonic Talk interview, click here.

It was getting quite a bit of backlash so is good to hear its getting almost as good as pc. Now the only "crappy" port remaining is Batman, hopefully they get similar improvements.

The damage is already done. The common user visiting sites for information have already read/heard these rumors about the WiiU version being crappy. I doubt they'll ever read this follow up information. Plus obviously messageboards are still toting around this now-defunked info about the low framerates.

Demos are double-edged swords. Some times they help a game, but some times they damage sales like in this case. I don't really see the WiiU version selling nearly as much as the 360 or PS3 due to the original rumors.

I'd like to hope that most gamers would try and stay informed on all of the latest news regarding the status of a game's development, like what's been improved upon.

Choosing to not stay informed makes me think that most gamers are just too lazy to stay up-to-date on news that's actually relevant to core gamer interest, and thus makes me question whether I can call certain people "core" and if they're the stereotypical "hardcorez" that likes to stubbornly stick to bad news and complain endlessly.

They really should have had a better demo out by now.

Sigh. How long have people been making demos now?

How hard is it to do one or all of these:
Put the DATE of the demo on the title screen
Superimpose the demo's DATE on the screen at all times
Put the DATE of the demo on a sign on the TV

I'm specifically saying DATE because "Build .03352" doesn't really convey the age of it as quickly as the DATE does. Why should the DATE of a demo be a secret, anyway?

Remember when people picked on Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D's frame-rate because the demo is choppy? Wouldn't having the DATE on there have eliminated a lot of problems? Jeez.

SEGA doesn't work like that, their demos are reused over and over, I wouldn't expect new improved ones this close to launch.

lol, I've played dozens of early demos across several events including three E3s, and I've not seen most of what you're talking about on any of these demos. I always need to ask the person standing next to the demo what the state of the build is. For me as an amateur "journalist" that's always my first question so that I can better understand the state of a build. For instance I can tell you right now that the build of Sonic & All-Stars at E3 was a build based off of pre-alpha code. This was also the state of the Batman Wii U demo that was getting complaints from critics for texture pop-in.

My point is, it's just as much the journalist's job as it is the publisher's to understand the state of a game demo. This should be a question EVERY journalist should ask, because it's a critical one.

Sure, but it's the internet age and a LOT of the information we get online is not from journalists.
A normal person doesn't understand that demos aren't just how the game is at the exact moment they play it.

If all of the misinformation is from journalists, then they're not doing their jobs, as you say. Again, blame it on the internet age, where if you don't publish now now now, the competition will scoop you. Or, uh, laziness.

Seriously, wouldn't posting the date be a simple and effective way of getting the age of the demo across?

Are you saying I'm the first person to ever consider putting a date on/near a demo? Cripes.

@Fred Duck
Yup. Most don't care and usually just put the "Not Final Product" or "Build XZY" on.
