RUMOR - GameCube games coming to Wii U Virtual Console?

Coming from an issue of Retro Gamer...

I don't know...sounds like speculation to me. Nintendo is yet to confirm anything like this, even with being asked multiple times. I hope this actually happens, but I'm not convinced yet.

This WILL happen, just like how the 3DS is going to get GBA games. Although I highly doubt Nintendo would add online to the multiplayer.

Wasn't this mentioned at E3 2011 in some random interview, though? I feel like I've heard this before from some official source but it was definitely not this year.

Wouldn't be surprising. When the Wii launched the N64 was about as old as the Gamecube is today. So why not launch the system with SMS or Wind Waker at launch. Would pay 10-15€ for it.

I find this hard to believe even though it would make sense. I would totally buy the games though if they did come.

There's no way to emulate the pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons with any of the WiiU controllers, so it isn't even possible to play Gamecube games at this point.

Nintendo would have to release a special Bluetooth GC controller or something, unless the Pro controller secretly has analog shoulder buttons.... Somehow I doubt it.

I really hope it includes gamecube games, anything for me to play f-zero gx again

@burnincheez
They will probably just remap the light press to L/R, full press to ZL/ZR, and Z to either the + or - (depending the game Z might have to go to a trigger or one of the face buttons instead)

I'd love to get some GCN VC! Especially WW!

And yeah the cube had amazing L+R buttons...

I believe this was part of the interview done by Engadget during CES 2012 back around January/February.. The lady Nintendo rep said those exact words.

How many games actually use the pressure buttons?

All I know from memory are Super Mario Sunshine and SSBMelee

Spoiler alert: Gamecube games only available to those who purchase Wii U before it's price drop, and only a select number of titles will be made available. We won't tell you what those titles are until we feel like it.

Of the top of my head:

Super Smash Bros Melee (shield size)
Metroid Prime (light press to strafe with enemies on-screen, full press for lock on)
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (same as prime perhaps)
Star Wars Rogue Leader (analog slow down/speed up and full press to break/boost)
Star Wars Rebel Strike (same as rogue leader)
F-Zero GX (strength of the lateral slide)
Eternal Darkness (light press followed by full press to change target)
Super Mario Sunshine (light press for squirt while walking, full press for aimed strong squirt)

Those are the games I have experience with though, there might be more.

I thought this was a given? It'd be nice if we got enhanced functionality but i'm not betting on it.

I can confirm this, it's the game I'm playing through right now. Oddly enough, I never noticed the analog feature when I played Metroid Prime 1, but I noticed it for this game.

Wouldn't want to pay for games I still own.

Even if that's possible for some games, it would require coding changes (including in-game button icons and instructions so that it isn't completely confusing), which Nintendo has rarely done for VC games. That seems like more work than Nintendo would want to put into VC games, but you never know... If they charge enough for GC games, they might think it's worth it.

But it's also not just a matter of "light press" and "full press." The shoulder button is analog until the click, with multiple levels of pressure feedback. Super Mario Sunshine would be unplayable on anything but a GC controller. I can't think of many games in that situation, though.

Well yes, its more work than Nintendo is known to put (hello N64 Mario Tennis VC), but they may as well go for it or just the full press and be done with it. BTW, I have Sunshine but never noticed a full analog function, I thought it was either light press or full press, I'll give it a try later. I do know that the Rogue Squadron games and F-Zero GX do have analog feedback though.

So you can download full Wii U titles and you're unsure if you're able to download Gamecube titles? man...it's obvious, and if they don't do that, then they're freaking idiots.

Sounds like Sakurai has been telling Nintendo what controllers are needed for smash bros!

Besides that, we could have always just used a USB port (and hacking) to use a GameCube controller!
