Ubisoft explain why Rayman Legends is Wii U exclusive

“Well, technically we could to it with SmartGlass [for Xbox 360] and with the Vita being linked to the PlayStation 3. The possibility could be there, but we chose to really focus on Wii U specifically because it has a special toolset, and because everyone that buys it gets what they need to play the game.

We don’t want to have the player dependent on other technology that they have to purchase to make sure they can play the full experience. Here you buy the Wii U system, you buy the game, and you can experience all of the content without extras. And we didn’t want to give somebody half of the experience just for the sake of getting it out on another console. We want the player to get everything that we have to offer them from this game.” - Rayman Legends'level designer. Chris McEntee

This is what I've been saying all along. With the Wii U, you get everything you need in box. With the other platforms, a similar experience is possible, but you have to buy multiple devices. That hurts a bit more in the wallet area!

I'm glad the game seems to be an exclusive. It looks great and I'm going to pick it up! I'd like to know when it comes out though :/ I do have a feeling that (ubisoft being ubisoft) they are going to port it to other platforms...like always

Who cares if it's an exclusive or not=???

As for the game, the Smart Glass could potentially work (and be profitable).

However, the PS3/Vita $600 combination (plus a $60 game) would be way too expensive to make, and few gamers would be able to afford that (thus it would lose Ubisoft a ton of money).

I'm glad someone else can see why Smartglass and PS3/Vita shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Wii U. They're just not a realistic alternative when developers can't be guaranteed that Xbox and PS3 owners have those devices.

That statement actually makes sense. Let's see if they'll follow through.

So... companies are now justifying why they are making games for Nintendo platforms... kinda dumb.

And this is exactly my point. NO DEVELOPER in their right mind is going to develop a game that needs the Wii U controller for Smartglass or PS Vita+PS3. The install base is not large enough and it just doesn't make common sense putting the game on something that requires 2 devices. It's also one of the reasons why Move and Kinect had piss poor support.... well that and Kinect doesn't have buttons.

yes but technically no you cannot make the same game , i suppose running two parallel games that just happen to synch is possible, but that would be way too much work .
it's a nice change that they have to explain the other way around for once

Entirely logical reasoning. Generally third parties have always shied away from basing games around hardware features you have to buy seperately, since there's no guarantee enough people will have bought them and then decided they need more games using them. Yes they could technically port it to the Xbox 360/PS3 and use Smart Glass and the Playstation Vita connectivity, but to do that would require either players own certain phones and software (the former) or a whole seperate games console (the latter).

Indeed, this is arguably why Sony and Microsoft will never be able to compete with the Wii U using Smart Glass and Playstation Vita integration, because these things don't come in the same box as the console.

Very pleased with this explaination, exactly how I have felt. I can't wait to play this game! Kinda sucks it's gonna miss launch by a few weeks but that just gives me time to play lots of Zombi U and Nintendo Land till then.
