GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Keeping the mini-fridge tidy

Remember when it was all the rage to talk about 'emptying the fridge' with the Wii? Oh yes, those days were great. Not having enough space to download new games, having to switch out software you had on the system for new content. Eventually we got the ability to use SD cards, which largely alleviated that pain.

Thanks to Poopaloop for the image!

Have an interesting schedule today. You'll find out more about that in a few hours. No worries, you'll be taken care of ALL day. You'll just have someone popping in for a few hours while I'm busy! Like I said, details on that a bit later. For now, I'll see you in a few, short hours!

It still doesn't mean that the issue doesn't still crop up. Let's fast-forward to the days of the 3DS. Nintendo's online offerings with the 3DS are head-and-shoulders above what Wii pulled off, especially when it comes to the shopping experience. We also had SD storage on day one. Even with all that, things start to pile up.

Today was the first day where I had to tidy up my SD card on my 3DS, or my 'mini-fridge', as one might call it. I was downloading a game for review, only to find out that I didn't have enough space on my card. Keep in mind, this is the 2 GB SD card that came with the first 3DS. I temporarily shifted some stuff around, but now I know it's time to tidy things up for real.

I'll be bumping my SD card content over to the 4 GB card that came with the 3DS XL, which will hopefully get me another year or so of downloading without issue. When I do hit this point once again, I think I'll really up the size to 16 GB or something like that. I can't complain about SD card storage when memory is pretty cheap and great content is coming out!

This leads me to my question for tonight. I wanted to know how many of you have already filled up your SD card on 3DS. Did you switch out your 2 GB card for something bigger before you even started using your 3DS? Are you not one to download much software? Will you be making the switch now due to Nintendo's focus on day-one retail/eShop games? Leave a comment and fill us in.

I don’t even think about space anymore.

I'm using a 128GB card. I've got a bunch of demos, and I plan on getting all of my retail games digitally. I will get the digital versions of Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Ocarina of Time, StarFox 64, and Pilotwings when they become available along with the save transferring feature. I’m hoping they eventually release Tetris Axis digitally as well. I want Code of Princess, and I would have gotten it already if it were also released digitally. For now, I’ll wait for it. I bought Art Academy just so I could get Donkey Kong. Having space really helps to alleviate much of the hesitation that I used to experience when buying games digitally. It’s one less obstacle to worry about when considering whether or not it’s worth it to purchase a digital game.

My 2GB got stuffed during its first Christmas, bought a 16GB one and there is still so much space left!

You JUST filled up the 2 gigs? I find that amazing I filled mine up long ago with free stuff. Ambassador games, swapnote, Excitebike, Zeldas 4 swords anniversary. I was forced to delete my pokedex and my pics/music after that point. I did buy Shantae and Sakura Samurai and I have stuff like Mario Kart Streetpass and Dead or Alive DLC eating my memory but thats it. I ran out of memory getting Sakura Samurai so I had to upgrade so I could get game demoes/videos/ectect. That 2 gigs just didn't last in the face of all my free stuff.

I bought an 8 gig card from Amazon so I am good again wanted 16gig but couldnt afford it.

Is the 3DS like Wii in that the actual game saves can only be saved onto the internal memory? Or can those also be saved on SD?

I got an 8GB a few months ago for 10 bucks... not bad at all. I didn't even have my 2GB filled up, but I used it to replace my 1GB in my Wii, and it even seems to run a bit faster loading stuff too, so that was a nice bonus.

A 16GB might be pushing it, but no reason not to if you've got the money I guess. But I'd say 8GB is fine, especially if you don't buy EVERY retail game digital.

Oh god that always pissed me off on both Wii and PS3. I get how they dont want you to copy online stats over but they should differentiate online and offline for all games. Made playing Brawl on my friends Wii really lame since we couldnt use all the characters.

As for 3DS saves are on the game cart. For stuff like Streetpass, DLC, eshop games, ect. Is all on your SD card you can copy any files over via pc if you wanna change SD cards but its locked onto the 3DD it was downloaded from. I have had no luck in sharing game saves but then again I havent tried much either.

I purchased my DSi Xl in June, so I bought a 8GB card for it at Walmart.$9 for 8GB vs $8 for 4GB.
So when I got my 3DS XL, I switched the packed in 4GB card for the 8GB card.
So, no I have not filled up my 3DS XL SD card.

Off subject, I sent my 3DS XL to NOA for repairs. I was told to include the system, stylus and SD card. When I got my repaired system back, there was a disclaimer note in the paper work. "the use of unlicensed Nintendo products could void my system warranty". I am assuming they're referring to the SD card. The 8GB card is a SanDisk card, should I be worried about my system warranty?

I'm at capacity by downloading all of the free stuff and taking a lot of photos/video. (I do art, so I document a lot of that.) Have had to remove a lot of photos/video. I'd recommend 3dporch.com to anyone who wants to store their photos online.

Also, switched to a 4GB card some time ago. Had to pull a 10-min video to fit LotR the other week.

Still using the 2GB card it came with -- it's about 75% full. Have all my Ambassador games, the various free aps like Swapnote, Sakura Samurai, Mighty Switch Force, Zen Pinball, Excitebike and a couple purchased Virutal Console games on there. In other words, nothing that takes up that much space. Once the really big eShop exclusives start coming out (like Harmo Knight) I'll probably spring for an 8GB.

I switched to a 4GB SD card, but it was only because I found it when I looked inside either the Wii or the DSi and was like YOU DON'T EVEN USE THIS.

I only have Mighty Switch Force, Denpa Men, 3 VC games (both Mario Lands and Metroid 2), Swapnote, Pokedex 3D and Netflix I believe as far as downloads. I have some DSiWare games, but those all appear to be saved to the 3DS itself.

I have plenty of space for what I will ultimately use it for.

As for Wii, the space thing is why I don't buy games for it. I hate not having everything available to me, and the SD card thing isn't a solution, because I still have to make space since it can't run the games without making space anyway. That defeats the purpose to me.

Before the 3DS even came out, I got myself an 8gb SD card and haven't looked back.

I'd probably go 32 GB from day one.

i got a 16GB SD almost a month after the 3DS so i didnt have any problem with that, and with the wiiu im planning in buying a cheap HDD (120-250GB) because i dont think im going to buy A LOT of virtual content (besides many eShop games and maybe virtual-only console titles)

I'm still using the 2GB with my 3DS but I haven't really bought many games on the eShop. I have all 20 Ambassador games installed on the system as well as a bunch of videos from E3 and a few games that I bought. :P

I have an 8GB card, and I'll probably upgrade to a 32GB card this Christmas season since I think they will be in the $15-$20 price range.

I just upgraded to an 8GB sd card recently. I never actually filled up the 2GB one that was with it, but with the prospect of being able to download games instead of buying them at a store, I felt that day was fast approaching.

Nah I doubt it's SD cards they're referring to, I assume they mean stuff like DS flash carts.

Mine is filled up. I still have the 2GB, but planning on getting a 16GB in about a week for eShop.

I have an 8GB card. I would love one day to have a 32GB one. I hear I can get one for like $15 online. Nice price.

I still "empty the fridge" when it comes to the PS3 (dang PS Plus). Not enough hard drive and too lazy to buy a new one.

I used my 4GB SD card I bought in 2009 for my DSi when I got my 3DS. Towards the end of that year, I still had some room but saw a 16GB card for $12 I think. Bought that and I'm really happy. By the time it fills up, hopefully a 64GB card would be affordable and I can use that.

I hope Nintendo sticks with using SD Cards come the next-gen portable they come out with. They are cheap but they work fine (if you get the right brand).

My 16GB card is also Class 6.

Got room to burn on my 2GB, but I caved and got an XL recently with the $100 tradein promo and got a 4 gig. I have both now, but I didn't know that the system transfer didn't instantly move stuff for me. So when I fill this 2 gig, I'll move on up.

I don't plan on full game downloads so I should be fine.

The only thing the 3ds uses Internal Memory for is DSiWare titles.. Everything else loads directly off the SD Card!

I haven't even began to fill it. I've used about half I guess. It says I still have like 5,000 blocks though.
